NYLON EXTRUDING FOR PROFIT IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITY.
As the world is going corporate, the need for packaging is increasing everyday. Packaging improves image and branding of a product, hence the need for shopping bags. Almost every business uses shopping bags these days ranging from supermarkets, eateries, banks (cash bags), boutique, and bookshop to road side shops thereby creating large demand for the product.
The demand for polythene shopping bags has been identified to continue to expand as the standard of living of the over 140 million population growing at the rate of 5.7% per annum continues to grow. The supply gap situation in Nigeria has created a market gap estimated at N 2.7 Billion annually in revenue.
Production of polythene shopping bags involves three {3} basic procedure which includes extruding, cutting and printing. Due to lack of funds, an entrepreneur can decide to go into extrusion only.
The extruder to be purchased would not only be based on the expected output but also on the type of polythene to be produced.
Basically there are two types of nylon namely the low and high density nylons. The low density nylon is the nylon used for wrapping bread. It is also used by dry cleaners and in pure water production. Generally, low density nylon because of there thickness does not make noise when squeezed. It varies in thickness depending on the purpose for which it is being used and what the customer wants.
High density nylon has more market share than low density nylon because they can carry heavier goods. Black nylons, white and black, yellow and black all fall within these categories. Generally, because of there weight, they make noise when squeezed.
The production process of polythene shopping bags {the extrusion part only}, The raw material is poured into a heating and melting unit of the extruding machine. This is heated, melted and converted to a passage (extrusion) and simultaneously cooled in the process by air generating apparatus. What passes through the cooling chamber is the polythene sheet being directed by some rollers, converting it into bales in the output unit.
The polythene shopping bag plant is a stationary one to be sourced from abroad and the price ranges from N 1,500,000 and upwards depending on the capacity, brand, country of origin and state of the machine.
A growing market exists for the extruding of virgin materials in Nigeria because of the relative high cost of starting –up a full scale polythene shopping bag plant. The entrepreneur would only be involved in the extrusion of the raw material while the cutting and printer aspect of the production process would be taken care of by other companies.
