MELON SEED DECORTICATION BUSINESS IN NIGERIA: THE OPPORTUNITIES.

There are two major seasons in Nigeria - the wet and dry seasons. The total annual rainfall decreases from 3,800mm at Forcados on the coast to below 650mm at Maiduguri in the north east of the country.

The length of the rainy seasons also decreases from nearly 12 months in the south to below 5 months in the North. Nigeria has relatively high temperatures throughout the year. The average annual maximum varies from 35 C in the north to 31 C in the south while the average annual minimum ranges from 23 C in the south to 18 C in the north.

This variability of the climate not only affects agricultural but also the type and distribution of the crops cultivated in different parts of the country.

One of such agricultural product it affects is melon seed, which is mainly found in the southern part of the country. Melon seeds {egwusi} is one of the major delicious soup making ingredients in Nigeria and apart from the climate which affects it distribution and production, requires that the shell be decorticated before it can be processed for consumption.

The manual decortication of egwusi which is mostly in use in Nigeria is not only time consuming and slow but also can be drudgery. The effect of this that output is usually low and sometime creating scarcity of the product with it associated the high cost especially in non producing areas during off season.

However, with recent advances in the fabrication of machines in Nigeria, melon shell decorticating can be fabricated thereby aiding the decorticating of the product, increasing output, creating employment and wealth for savvy investors.

The market for egwusi in Nigeria is national, sustainable and growing.

The investor can choose to only decorticated the product and then package or after decorticating the product, grind and then package. The final product can be packed in sachets or small plastic containers.

To sell decorticated melon seed {egwusi} in Nigeria or, the investor might have to register with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control {NAFDAC} in Nigeria and at such the promoters would have to ensure that the production meets good quality standard by ensuring stringent and hygienic condition prevail at the production plant.

TRADING ON RAW HIDES AND SKINS IN NIGERIA: THE OPPORTUNITY.

In Nigeria, agriculture has remained the largest sector of the economy. It generates employment for about 70% of Nigeria’s population and contributes about 40% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with crops accounting for 80%, livestock 13%, forestry 3% and fishery 4%.

Though contributing only 13% to the national GDP, livestock plays an important role by providing part of the nations protein needs and it is from it that hides and skin is gotten from.

Ranking only second to cocoa as Nigerians largest non-oil export in terms of volume ,processed hides and skin sure do have a lot of international demand where they are used in the production of leather products like shoes, bags, watch straps, belts etc.

Nigeria produces one of the best hides and skin in the world and in order to encourage the local processing of hides and skin, development of related industries and employment generation, government placed a ban on the export of raw hide and skin in Nigeria.

This ban on the export of raw hides and skin as lead to establishment of local tannery constantly in need of raw hides and skins for process hence creating supply opportunity for interested investors. However to tap into this opportunity, the investor would need to understand in details the different types and sizes of hides and skin in the market.

Important to note is the ever increasing competition between humans and industry for raw hides and skin in Nigeria which further creates scarcity of the product.

The major market destinations for Nigeria's processed hides and shin is mainly in Europe and Asia with Italy , China ,Hong Kong leading the pack.

Though in Nigeria, majority of the product processed hides and skin tends to come from cow and goat, other animal skin equally have great demand and they include crocodile, buffalo, Zebra etc. It is however, important to note that in order to guide against indiscriminate killing and pouching of wild animals, the convention on international trade of endangered species of wild fauna and flora {CITES}, signed a treaty that restricts the importation of animal skins in order to preserve such animals. The treaty also empowers CITES to grant exemption for trade in skins of animals reared in captivity.

SORGHUM PRODUCTION AND SALES IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITY.

The local market of some agricultural commodity in Nigeria tends to be more stable, viable and profitable compared to the international market. This force of demand and supply supports the local trading than the international trading of agricultural commodities like cassava and sorghum due to better price offering and ready market. For instance the local price of unprocessed cassava tubers is better than the international price of processed cassava chips/pellet in China, a major destination and buyer of cassava products in the world.

I have said and written much on the investment opportunity available in the local trading of cassava tubers in Nigeria in my past articles {interested clients should visit my past articles} and like you rightly noted the essence of this article is to stress the local trading opportunity of sorghum, a good substitute of maize, {which I have written on} in Nigeria and how interested investors can tap into such opportunity.

Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor (L) Moench) is a grass of east african origin, which is grown in the North of Nigeria. Sorghum is the 4th important cereal after wheat, rice and maize and is used as a maize substitute for livestock feeds because of their similar nutritional values. It is also used for distilled beverages, condiments, ethanol and alcoholic beverages. Sorghum has two varieties namely the white and yellow variety.

Some of the major producing states in Nigeria include Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Gombe, Taraba, Plateau, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Nasarawa, Niger and Zamfara.

Though is a no official figure on the national production, demand and supply of sorghum in Nigeria, the local demand is more than the current local supply owning to the increasing demand from local industries in Nigeria. The international market is also witnessing increasing demands.

The current scenario represents a sellers market and an opportunity for interested investors to supply this commodity to industry in Nigeria.

The product would be packaged in pp woven sacks of 50/100/150 KG depending the buyers requirement which abounds in different parts of the country.

MAIZE PRODUCTION AND SALES IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITY.

Nigeria produces a wide range of agricultural commodities, which could serve as raw materials for industrial production and food crop for human consumption. This dual nature of these crops makes them to be in high demand and one of such crop is Maize.

Maize (Zea Mays) is a cereal crop that grows across a range of agro-ecological zones in Nigeria, though it is grown slightly more in the Northern part of the country. Two types of maize are grown in Nigeria, the yellow and white variety and due to its rate of adaptability, Maize is not a seasonal product and some of the major producing states in Nigeria includes Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Gombe, Taraba, Plateau, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Nasarawa ,Niger and Zamfara.

Nigeria has a land area of 98.3m hectares and at present about 34m hectares or 48% are under cultivation. With this, one would have thought Nigeria would be self sufficient in Maize production but the reverse is the case. The country presently produces less than the market demand.

Much as been said and written on the investment opportunity available in the cultivation of maize but the essence of this article is to stress the local trading opportunity of maize in Nigeria and how interested investors can tap into such opportunity.

It is on record that more than 60% of Nigeria's production of maize is consumed by the industrial sector for production of flour, beer, malt drink, corn flakes, starch, syrup, dextrose and animal feeds. In order to meet the local demand for the crop, government placed a ban on the export of maize in Nigeria.

The current scenario represents a sellers market and an opportunity for interested investors to cultivation, process, package and sell maize to industry/ humans or just choose to trade on the commodity.

The product would be packaged in pp woven sacks of 50/100/150 KG depending the buyers requirement which abounds in different parts of the country.

CASSAVA STARCH PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA: THE OPPORTUNITIES.

Cassava (Manihort Esculentus (Euphorbiacea)) is grown in all the states of the Federation with the current production level being about 45 million metric tones per annum; a figure expected to double by 2020. Nigeria is the leading cassava producer in the world, producing a third more than Brazil and almost double the production capacity of Thailand and Indonesia. Although it is the world leader in cassava production, 90% of the annual production in Nigeria is targeted for the domestic food market.

Cassava has the potential to industrialize Nigeria more than any other product if its potentials are properly harnessed, cassava will not only be a white gold but an alternative to oil as a non-oil foreign exchange earner and a key instrument for job creation and catalyst for development.

It is in realization of this fact that lead government to prioritize the cultivation , processing and export of cassava in the years past thereby leading to what is been referred to as the cassava revolution in Nigeria.

The business opportunities created by the cassava revolution has led to increased local investments in the cassava processing industry such as the cassava glucose syrup factory which requires 132,000 metric tones of fresh cassava tubers annually to produce 26,000 metric tones of glucose syrup. There is also the cassava processing factories for flour, and starch in various parts of the country. This has created a growing local demand for cassava tubers and I have written on the investment opportunity in the local supply of cassava tubers to industries in Nigeria. Interested investors should go through our archives to read more on this opportunity.

Starch is one of products that can be processed from cassava tubers and some of the machinery and equipment required for cassava starch production includes peelers/knives, cassava graters/granulators, pulp-sifters, dryers, pulverizers, and bagging machines

The major raw material required for the production of cassava starch though starch can be produced from maize, potato and other such products and the manufacturing process for cassava starch is as follows.

First the uprooted raw cassava tubers are peeled with the use of knives or peelers, then the peeled cassava is taken to the granulator. The function of the granulator is to mill the cassava into pulp. The pulp is then taken to pulp sifter. The pulp sifter is to separate the starch and chaff. It also extracts starch from the pulp. Attached to the pulp sifter is a machine that collects the extracted starch from the pulp. At this stage, the starch is coagulated and is still wet.

From here the coagulated starch is taken to the dryer. The temperature of the dryer must be that of the sun, between 27 c to 37 c, in order not to change the colour from the starch to black or brown. The starch is dried to 0.5 of its moisture content.

The next stage is pulverizing which is done by the pulverizer. The function of the pulverizer is to mill the dried starch to flour. After milling to powder, the next stage is packaging, which can done in sachets, sacks etc.
