HAULAGE RICHES IN NIGERIA

Haulage involves the transportation of goods by road and railway. It is very important to the socio-economic development of any nation and if the vision 20: 2020 of the present administration is to be achieved, the government would have to develop the transportation system . An efficient transport system is an essential component in the production and distribution of goods.

Since the collapse of the rail system in Nigeria, road haulage business has assumed a wider dimension and has become the most utilized way of intercity movement of goods and services. Goods usually convened petroleum products, building materials, containers, solid minerals, agricultural products and other finished products.

MARKET ANALYSIS OF THE PROJECT

The market analysis of the project would be viewed under the following

1.Country Background
2.Market Review
3.Projected Demands
4.Competition

Country Background:

Nigeria has one the fastest growing economies in the African continents. The country is located 50 degrees north of the equator covering an area of about 923,968 square kilometers. It has boundaries with the following countries/locations :North – Republic of Niger, South – Atlantic Ocean, East – Republic of Cameroon and West – Republic of Benin.

Nigeria’s major exports are crude oil, rubber, cocoa, sesame seed, solid minerals, cotton, hides and skin etc. The country is aggressively developing her tourism sector.Nigeria can currently boast of over one thousand {1000} 3 star hotels and 5 star hotels scattered in different parts of the country.

The banking sector has also been fully developed to service the expanding economy. The country has about 25 commercial banks and hundreds of micro-finance banks for easy access to funds for short, medium and long term development projects to small, medium and large enterprises.

The transport sector is also receiving a major boost from the various tiers of government .Currently.more than twenty shipping lines do business in Nigeria. The country’s domestic water ways is also aggressively being developed especially with the recent dredging of the lower Benue river. The country has network of roads linking the thirty-six states to each other though the state of the roads is at various stages of disrepair. Also over twenty international and fifteen domestic airlines do business in Nigeria.

Market Review:

Since the collapse of the rail system in Nigeria, more emphasis has been given to road transportation. The haulage market is national. With a population of over 140 million people,an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum and an average economic growth rate of 3.5% in the past five {5}years,Nigeria has a large ,expanding and sustainable market for haulage business.

In the northern part of the country, the products readily convened are agricultural produce and solid minerals while in the southern part of the country ,the products readily transported are petroleum products and other finished products through the commercial and economic nerve centres of lagos,Abuja,kano,kaduna,port-harcourt,aba etc.

Nigeria has remained a strong member of various international organizations such as the Economic Community of West Africa States {ECOWAS} which allows for the free movement of people, goods and services amongst member countries hence dipping the market opportunity in the haulage business.

Project Demand:

Person and companies usually in need of haulage services includes manufacturing companies, exporters and importers amongst others.

Generally, in Nigeria opportunities exist in the lifting and transportation of petroleum, granite from quarry site ,sand from rivers and finished products from industries and these has lead to a broad classification of the haulage industry into three namely

1. Tanker-Trailer
2. Tipper
3.Cranes

Tanker- Trailer: They vary in size, shape and capacity and these also affect the use to which they are put to. Tankers are usually used in the transportation of petroleum products. The size also reflects the use to which the truck might be put to as kerosene and diesel delivery trucks especially home delivery are smaller then those use filling stations. The trailer can also be used to convene agricultural products from the north to the south . If the entrepreneur intends to use the truck in the transportation of petroleum product, he/she would have to register with the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers {NUPENG}

Tippers: Tippers are used in the transportation of granites and sands from the quarry site and lakes respectively for use in the construction industry. To be involved in the business, you have to be registered with the quarry site you intend to lift the products from.
Cranes:Cranes are used in the lifting and transportation of heavy duty equipment like generators, transformers, containers,PHCN poles and other such heavy duty equipments.Cranes comes in different design, capacity and use.We have the 20 tons cranes,a crane that can carry 20 tons and below weight of load. The self loader, that can load it self and the low bed crane used in the transaction of other earth moving equipment like excavators and graders.

There are three {3} basic way of entering the haulage market and they include

As an Independent Operator
As a contractor or Sub-contractor
Leasing of truck to Haulage companies

Independent Operator:

As an independent operator you operate your truck and seek for contract from the multi-nationals and other interested parties on your own and get paid for deliveries made.

As an independent operator, you would do your own maintainance and repair, employ your own driver. You can decide to employ a manager who would scout for goods and also do the day to day running of the business.

As a Contractor or Sub- Contractor:

As a contractor with a multi-national or manufacturing company, you have decided to place your fleet with the company and they would manage it for you, secure the driver and the maintainance and repair and pay you every month a agreed amount ranging between N400,000 to N600,000.

Of course , you have to be registered with the company .

As a sub-contractor, you are coming under a contractor in that company to register you fleets as their own and pay you an agreed sum after taking there commission.

It is important that before going into these agreement you study the terms and conditions of the contract with your lawyers.

Leasing of truck to Haulage Companies:

Leasing out the truck to a haulage company is same as being a contractor with a multi-national .The only difference is that this time you are going to the dealing with a haulage company instead of a multi-national though the terms and condition might not be different .

Again it is important to go with your lawyer.

A lot of haulage companies exist that wants to go into partnership with truck owners.

Competition:

The enterprenuer would meet strong competition from companies already in the business especially when the enterprenuer wants to be a contractor.

For first time operator with small start-up capital, it is better to lease the truck to a haulage company but if you have the funds to compete in the market ,go independent.

FINANCIAL ANALYSIS OF THE PROJECT

Just like it would be difficult to place a fixed amount as the start-up requirement ,It would be difficult also to state for sure how much to be made form the business because it depend on the method of management the enterprenuer wants to employ.

The amount of start-up requirement would depend on whether you are buying a brand new trailer, second hand popularly known as “TOKUNBO” or buying a trailer head and refurbishing the engine. The cost of a brand new ranges from N 15 Million to N20 Million depending on the brand and capacity while the cost of a second hand ranges from N6 Million to N7 Million.

However, since the enterprenuer would be buying the truck personally, the start-up capital would depend greatly on his/her negotiating skills.

The money to be made from the business depends greatly on the management style the enterprenuer wants to adopt.

If the enterprenuer choices to lease out the truck ,he/she can be making N400,000 –N600,000 monthly after deducting expenses .If a trailer travels from lagos to kano, they charge between N180,000 to N200,000 per trip but if it within lagos they charge between N40,000 to N80,000 depending on the distance and the product the truck is carrying .If it carrying petroleum product, the fee is usually high.

Tippers used in the transportation of granites and sand charge between N30,000 – N35,000 per trip.

CASSAVA FLOUR PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITIES.

Cassava tubers is one of those agricultural products that can be cultivated in any part of the country . This is possible because they grow in relatively poor soil and in low rainfall areas.Nigeria remains the largest producer of cassava in the world producing both varieties {Sweet Cassava,Manihot Palmata and Bitter Cassava ,Manihot Utilissima} in large quantity.

Cassava can be processed into garri, fufu, flour and livestock feeds for human and animal consumption. The market demand for cassava derivatives is increasing by the day especially in the flour mill industry ,where the governement policy of making composite bread flour mandatory, combining 10% of unfermented cassava flour with 90% wheat flour since January 2005 ,has created a market valued at over twenty-eight billion naira { N28 Billion}.

This has created an opportunity for cassave farmers to add value to the product and make more money before selling. The investor can choose to process the product into cassave cake and sell to cassava flour miller or producing cassava flour directly from fresh cassava tubers and selling to the wheat flour millers directly.

The plant for the processing of fresh cassava tubers to flour can be fabricated locally and the cost would be dependent on the scope the investor wants to operate.

To process the fresh cassava tubers into cake the machine required is a grater and an hydraulis press. For the manually operated plant, the financial requirement is about N300,000 while the electrical driven cassava cake production plant would cost about N 800,000 producing two {2} tones of cassava cake per hour.

An ideal cassava flour mill can produce a minimum of three {3} tones of cassava flour per day and would need an input of 12 tones of fresh cassava tubers. That is,two {2} tones of fresh cassava tubers will produce one {1} tone of cassav cake and two {2} tones of cassava cake will produce one {1} tone of cassava flour.

The estimated total project cost for the cassava flour production plant is given below.

Preliminary Expenses N150,000
Plant and Machinery N3,000,000
Accomodation N750,000
Furniture N300,000
Vehicle N850,000
Working Capital N500,000

Total N 5,500,000

From the investment analysis an average turnover of N25,000 Net is expected per day and the return on investment is expected within a year of operations.

KAOLIN DEPOSITS IN NIGERIA ; THE OPPORTUNITIES

For a nation that wants to grow, it must look inwards to identify areas where it has comparative advantage over other nations and effort should be geared towards the development of the identified areas.

Apart from crude potentials of Nigeria, Nigeria also has comparative advantage in the solid minerals sector owning to the large deposits of minerals scattered in the different parts of the country and if the nation is to achieve vision 2020, more efforts should be geared towards the development of the solid minerals sector of the Nigerian economy.

Kaolin is one of the industrial minerals that can be found in commercial quantity. In fact, Nigeria has an estimated reserve of about two {2} billion metric tones of kaolin deposit scattered in different parts of the country to include ogun, edo, plateau and Nassarrawa states.

The market for kaolin is large, sustainable and expanding because of the numerous applications of the product. Also there is an outright ban on the importation of kaolin into the country in order to stimulate the growth of the local industry.

Kaolin can be supplied in raw or processed form depending on the requirement of the buyer. There is market for the raw and processed kaolin in Nigeria and abroad but I would dwell on the processed one for the supply in the local market.

Kaolin processing is of two types, the wet and dry process. The wet process is used when the silica content and impurities in the raw kaolin is high and usually the end product is high grade kaolin used in the pharmaceutical industry. The dry process involves the drying, crushing, sifting and bagging of the raw kaolin and it is usually employed for raw kaolin with less silica and impurity content.

There are no standard methods of processing for the treatment of different types of kaolin. Primarily the processing priority and the choice of suitable machines and equipment depend on the mineralogical spectrum of the crude kaolin and on the demands concerning the quality of the end products. The essential influencing factors which do not only determine the quality of the products but also the effort which should go into the technical processing are as follows:

- Type, %-proportion and particle size distribution of the clay minerals
- Type and %-proportion of silicate, oxidic and sulphide ‘’impurities’’
- Electrochemical surface phenomena of clay minerals
- Technological demands on the quality of the end products.

The effects of each of the factors overlap and have either a strengthening or weakening effect of specific quality characteristics. Therefore each factor can only be determined to a certain extent when assessing the attainable end qualities. These factors provide little information for the lay-out of a suitable process.

TALC DEPOSITS IN NIGERIA ; THE OPPORTUNITIES

Talc is a natural and rich minerals in the world with various colors of white to pink, light green grey and black. Talc is also name as soapstone, French chalk and steatite. It is a hydrated magnesium silicate deposited by the metamorphosis of dolomite and quartzose rocks or by the hydrothermal alteration of ultramafic and mafic rocks.

The chemical Molecular formula is Mg3Si4O10(OH)2 with hardness of 1 to 1.5 and a specific gravity of 2.7 to 2.8. Talc is a softest minerals with extreme Softness, Smoothness, Slippery & Lubricating, Chemical Inertness, High Luster & Sheen, High Fusion point, Low Heat & Electricity Conductivity & Pigment extenders.

So talc is an extremely useful and economically important mineral, it is normally widely used in ceramics, paint, paper and plastics, agriculture and food, personal care, mold release agents, wastewater treatment, textiles, etc

The five main characteristics of talc that make it a unique material for industrial and domestic applications are:

* Lamellarity (made of platelets that easily slide on each other)
* Softness (unctuous and not abrasive)
* Chemical inertness
* Affinity for organic chemicals
* Whiteness

An estimated reserve of over 100 million tones of tlac has been obtained in Niger,Osun,Kogi,Kwara,Ogun,Taraba, and Kaduna states. There are only two medium processing plants currently operating in Nigeria and both are in Niger state. The color of the Nigerian talc varies from white through milky -white to gray. The talc industry represents one of the most versatile sectorsof the industrial minerals of the world. The exploitation of the vast talc deposit in Nigeria would there satisfy not only local demands but also that of the international market as well

1) Pharmaceuticals: Talc Luzenac Pharma which is approved by the majority of pharmaceutical producers worldwide, because it is in conformity with the European, American and Japanese pharmacopoeias. Luzenac Pharma is supplied in TC20' loaded with 20 tons, and its average selling price is 1000EUR/Ton

2) Decorative mat paints: Talc Steabright is ideal and it is very white and has a top cut of 25 microns. Its average price is 750EUR/Ton

3) For cosmetic talc (baby powder), Talc Steasilk 5CI is the best and it is also very white and its average price is 600EUR/Ton

The investor can start by operating a mine and supplying directly to powder processing companies around or go into the processing of the product.

INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE PLASTIC INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA

At this crucial time of scarce resources, massive unemployment and poverty, there is need for retirees, enterprenuers, graduates and indeed others who want something doing to go into the production of polyethylene bags popularly called nylon bags.

There is no doubt that polyethylene material is the preferred choice of manufacturers in the packaging of there products in Nigeria and this can be attributed to a number of factors to include the fact the they are cost effective and easier to produce compared to steel iron or glass.

As a raw material, polyethylene material are used in the production of plastic bottles, buckets, chairs, tables, combs, footwear cutting across different sectors of the economy to include cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food and beverages and petroleum.

Polyethylene or polythene is the most widely used plastic, with an annual production of approximately 80 million metric tons. Its primary use is within packaging notably the plastic shopping bag.

Polyethylene is classified into several different categories based mostly on its density and branching. The most important polyethylene grades are HDPE, LLDPE and LDPE.

The plastic industry in Nigeria is one that can accommodate different kinds of investor’s namely small, medium and large scale and an attempt would be made to analyze the opportunities available in each of this segment of the market.

Scale Scale:

In the small scale sector, opportunities exist in the production of nylon bags used for packaging of sugar, garri, bread, salt and other such food items. Production at these strata is usually without a jumbo extruder machine. The machine required are cutting and sealing machine, die-cutting machine ,generator etc.The product are cut from the extruded polythene film rolls purchased from any of the plastic producing companies . The high density polyethylene is used to make shopping bags while the low density polyethylene is used in the production of breading wrappers. The film rolls are then feed into the machine which cuts and seals the bags in different sizes required. The open end of the shopping bags is die-cut for easy handling. No die-cutting is required for the bread wrappers.

Medium Scale:

The medium scale requires more start-up capital that the small scale because of the addition of the jumbo extruder machine. It offers the investor reduced operating cost and an opportunity to make more money from the extruder machine itself. Depending on the financial strength of the investor, a waste nylon and plastic recycling plant can be added to the equipment inventory.

Polythene Shopping bags are produced with a jumbo extruder machine. They are produced with either virgin or reprocessed materials depending on the colour you want to achieve.

About N8, 100 is required to process a bag of 25 kg of raw material and a profit margin of about N2500 is feasible on a bag.

The cost of start-up usually would depend on the scope the investors wants to deploy and if the machine would be automatic or not. The source would also affect the cost outlay.

Large Scale: This segment of investment targets the production of plastic bottles, buckets, combs, footwear etc. Obviously it requires more capital investment. Plastic bottles are cylindrical containers made out of different types of resins that are manipulated to form a plastic for everyday use. Plastic bottles are ideal for holding a variety of liquids such as water ,juice, milk, shampoo, gasoline, oil, liquid detergent and the use cuts across different sectors of the economy to include pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, cosmetics and petroleum .These strata is usually controlled by Indians and Chinese in Nigeria.

COW SLAUGHTERING, PROCESSING AND PACKAGING: AN UNTAPPED GOLDMINE IN NIGERIA.

A lot as been said about the multiplicity use of the various parts of an oil palm trees and it is widely agree no tropical tree meets it when it come to these. Cows are one livestock that seems comparable to oil palm tree because of the various uses which it different parts can be put into. No seems to be a waste, even their dung’s can be processed into fertilizers and used to nourish plants.

Beef produced from the slaughtering and processing of cow are good source of protein and the bones and blood sold for feed millers to be processed into bone and blood meal respectively used mainly in the poultry industry. The horns and hoofs are used in the production of fertilizers and buttons while the hides and skin are further processed and used in the production of shoes, wallets, belts and watch straps amongst others.

Due to the usefulness of the component parts of a cow, different industries can be attached to the slaughtering, processing and packaging of the product and this is where the government should come in and create the enabling environment to stimulate more investment in this sector because of the benefit of employment generation and increase in the gross domestic product {GDP} of the country amongst others.

Some of the industries attached to these single livestock include the following mince meat processing plant, operating a cold room ,meat delivery vans, operating a ranch, operating a abattoir, bone meal processing plant, blood meal processing plant, hide and skin processing plant and horn and hoof processing plant.

Mince Meat Processing Plant:

There is a growing need for hygienically prepared and package beef product in Nigeria and this is basically been fueled by the growing middle class income earners in the country. This trend is further deepen by the need for hygienically prepared and package beef by corporate consumers and used in the production of sausage rolls ,meat pies ,gala etc. Some of the corporate clients that require the product include hotels, supermarkets,
fast food eateries and multi-nationals like UAC.

Operating Cold Room Service:

Attaching a cold room to an abattoir is a very lucrative because beefs have a limited shelf live if not properly stored and storage is usually done after the slaughtering, processing and packaging of the product from where it is sold to retail consumers who usually buy bit by bit. The scope of the cold room should be dependent on the size of the market in question.

Meat Delivery Vans:

At least in Lagos it is an offense to sell beef in unhygienic conditions and the Lagos state government pioneered the use of special vans in the transportation of beefs from the abattoir to consumers. This is created another market for savvy investors to tap into make good returns on investment .Transportation can be intercity or intracity and we expect this is replicated in other states of the federal.

Operating a Ranch:

Apart from a few well established cattle ranch in the country with organized management system in place, cattle rearing are mostly done by Fulani herdsmen who move from one location to another in search of water and pasture for the stock and they largely operate with less managerial ability hence get little for there effort. There exists a large for interested investors that want to invest and run a ranch in Nigeria. The opportunities are so great because the market for your product is guaranteed. The investor can choice to buy from the Fulani herdsmen and sell in abattoir in Lagos and other city across the country. The business can be started with a average of N 3 Million and returns of N 800,000 is feasible.

Operating an Abattoir:

About 300 hundred cows are slaughtered in Lagos abattoir on a daily basis. Buyers of cow parts are readily available because cow meat is about the most common and readily available source of protein in Nigeria. Operators of the abattoir depending on their financial strength decide to only provide the physical structure and only tenant to operate shops from there with their tools and pay royalties to you as agreed.

Operating a Bone and Blood Meal Processing Plant:

Another associated business venture which the investor can decide to operate is a bone/blood meal processing plant though the latter is not common in the country. With unemployment so high in the country most youth and retiree now prefer to engage in one form of business or the other, poultry business because of its short gestation and less electricity input requirements is one of the preferred investment destination. Because more than 60 % of operating cost is expended on feeding, operating a bone and blood meal processing plant would greatly yield good returns on investment. You can read on write-up on operating a poultry farm in Nigeria on my blogsite at www.farriconsultingng.blogspot.com

Hide and Skin Processing Plant:

Hides and skin is by far the less utilized bye-product of cows in Nigeria because of conflicting interest. In Nigeria, Pomo {the skin of cow after undergoing processing} is a very most loved meat and this makes the product to be scare. There exist a very large and growing market for hide and skin in China and other parts of the world and as far as the demands for shoes, bags, belts and other such product which makes use of leather as there raw material continues to grow , the demand for hide and skin would continue to increase.

Horn and Hoof Processing Plant:

Processing of horn and hoof in the country would certainly generate lots of funds for the investor because not many company are into it. Horn and hoof can be used in the production of fertilizers, buttons and so many other products.
