HOW TO MAKE HUGE RETURN ON INVESTMENT PROCESSING AND TRADING IN GROUDNUTS IN NIGERIA

Groundnut {peanuts} is an essential food product that enjoys good patronage in both the domestic and the international market. It is a veritable source of edible oil, animal feed and also consumed as snacks.

Groundnut "Arachis hypogaea” is a species in the legume "bean" family. The cultivated peanut was probably first domesticated in the valleys of Peru. Records have it that groundnut was first introduced in Nigeria in the early 16th Century.

In the period between 1956 and 1967, groundnuts including its cake and oil, accounted for about 70 per cent of Nigeria’s total export earnings and created the legendary groundnut pyramids which dotted the landscape of Kano. Today, no thanks to the discovery of oil and the lack of political will to develop the agricultural sector in Nigeria, not only has the pyramids disappeared but Nigeria has also lost a place in the world market as a leading exporter of cash crops.

At 1.55 million tons in 2008/2009 crop season, Nigeria currently occupies the fourth position in the world production of groundnuts and interested investor can take advantage of these by trading and processing of the product.

A resumption to the vibrant groundnut producing era would no doubt help to conserve some of the scare foreign reserve being used for the importation of crude edible oil, it would also help to generate employment opportunities. Some of the areas investors can engage the market includes

 TRADING
 DECORTICATING
 MILLING

The trade in edible groundnuts, also known as HPS {Hand-Picked – Selected} is a good business despite the fact that the investor stands to gain more from the processing of the product. Groundnuts are exported as raw decants, shelled or raw peanuts, in-shell and processed peanuts though the convenient way to export is raw, in –shell. While the local price of groundnut currently stands at between N 50,000 – N 70,000 per ton, the international price is about $ 1200 / ton FOB.

The investor can choose to add value to the product by decorticating it before selling to the local and international market with more emphasis on the local market.

A decorticator is a machine for stripping the shell {husk} in order to free the seeds in preparation for further processing. The processing technology is relatively simple and involves the following: sorting, decorticating and packing. The product produced can be packaged and sold to local oil mills or food vendors scattered in different parts of the country.

The processing of groundnuts to yield edible oil is perhaps the best area the investor can engage in with maximum utilization of the product. The milling of the product would yield edible oil which can be refined to get vegetable oil and ground cake which is a valuable input in the preparation of animal feed and at such can be sold to animal feed millers.

A short fall in the supply of vegetable oil as been identified even after seven years of implementing the presidential initiative on vegetable oil production in Nigeria.

The investor can take advantage of a number of incentives that have been put together to encourage investment in agriculture. These include;

o Finance Credit
o Tax Holdings
o Reduced Customs Charges on Imported Inputs
o Technical Support through Research Institutions
o Export Financing and Guarantee
o Agricultural Insurance Scheme
o Extension Services

THE OPPORTUNITIES IN MINING AND PROCESSING OF COLUMBITE-TANTALITE {COLTAN} IN NIGERIA

Tantalite is among the group of minerals used in the refractory industry, and is characterized by a high melting point and strength at high temperature. These properties make them useful as furnace construction minerals and for application in the aerospace and electronic industries. Despite its high cost, tantalite is more cost effective in many applications, as down time and maintenance costs are reduced. In addition to these valuable properties, tantalum, as a refractory metal, shows remarkable resistance in many of the most hostile chemical environments.

Columbite, also called niobite, niobite-tantalite and columbate, is a black mineral group that is an ore of niobium and tantalum. It has a submetallic luster and a high density and is a niobate of iron and manganese, containing tantalate of iron.

Columbite and tantalite are collectively known as coltan in Africa. Tantalum is a valuable rare element used in electronics manufacturing while columbite is used in forming alloys that are useful in nuclear, aerospace and gas turbine engineering.

Rare-metal pegmatites containing economic concentrations of columbite-tantalite ore minerals (coltan) are widespread in the Pan-African (600±150Ma) basement of Nigeria. Thesepegmatites are also important sources of precious and semiprecious stones (such as beryl, aquamarine, tourmalines).

Until recently these pegmatites were known mainly from a broad 400km-long NE-SW trending belt stretching from the Wamba-Keffi- Nasarawa area (near the Jos Plateau) through Isanlu-Egbe in central Nigeria to the Ijero-Aramoko-llesha areas of southwest Nigeria, and a few occurrences in the Obudu and Oban massifs of southeast Nigeria.

Large deposits of Tantalite are known to occur in Nasarawa, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, Cross Rivers, Gombe, Kogi States as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The. deposits are both alluvial and primary in the numerous pegmatite bodies that infest these areas. Grades of well over 50% Ta2O5 are found.

Tantalite currently commands a good international demand and price.

Granting of a Mining License to a prospective company is subject to proof of economic reserve of the mineral commodity for which a concession is sought. The process involves the company first applying to the Honourable Minister for Certificate of Entry into Mining Industry. The requirements for this include submission of the company’s Certificate of Registration, evidence of technical competence and of financial capability.

The next step is for the company to apply and obtain a prospecting right (PR) to enable it carry out general and scientific prospecting for the categories of minerals within the prospecting right. If properly conducted, work on this right will guide the company towards zeroing into a particular mineral within a specific land area.

The company will then put up application for an exclusive prospecting license (EPL) in the State Mines Office where the mineral is located. This is an exploration license for a particular mineral(s) over a particular land area which, by law, should not exceed 22 square kilometers. Once granted, the area is held exclusively to the company which will now confidently invest in mineral exploration work on the area without hindrance. This license is renewable every one or two years depending on the nature of the terrain.

It is only after the company has satisfied itself of the availability of the mineral in commercial quantity on the EPL that it will apply for grant of a Mining License over the whole or part of the area covered by the EPL.

In the course of all these processes, the law insists that the company employs the services of a “technically competent person” in carrying out the prospecting under the PR, the exploration within the EPL and finally the extraction of the mineral within the mining license area.

Some of the investment incentives in the solid minerals industry in Nigeria include

 3-5 years Tax Holiday
 Deferred royalty payments
 Possible capitalization of expenditure on exploration and surveys
 Extension of infrastructure such as roads and electricity to mining sites, and provision of 100% foreign ownership of mining concerns.

The services we offer include securing mining site / titles and in partnership with other professionals, conduct site survey and deposit evaluation. We also prepare feasibility study for clients interested in the trading of the commodity.

MINING AND PROCESSING OF ZINC ORE FOR EXPORT IN NIGERIA

There are tremendous opportunities in the solid minerals sector in Nigeria and government has invested heavily in the generation of vital information on minerals which is critical for success in the mining business. The national policy on mineral metals in Nigeria has it’s main objectives

• Achieve a substantial increase in GDP contribution by the minerals sector;
• Generate quality Geoscience data;
• Establish a transparent licensing regime;
• Formalise artisanal and small scale mining operators;
• Poverty eradication through ASM operations;
• Employment generation;
• Wealth creation through value addition;
• Increase capacity of mineral based industries;
• Attract private investment capital;

An estimated thirty-five {35} industrial mineral in commercial quantity have been discovered in the country and zinc ore is one of such minerals.

Zinc is usually found associated with lead and an estimated 10 million tonnes of lead/zinc veins are spread over eight States of Nigeria have been found. Some of the states where zinc can be found include Nassarawa, Ebonyi, Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe amongst others.

The major uses of Zinc are
 Anti – Corrosion coating on steel {Galvanizing}
 Precision Components {Die Casting}
 Construction Material
 Brass
 Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics

The investor can penetrate the market as a miner, trader/exporter or a processor.

Zinc commands a good share of the mineral market and a detailed analysis of the cost and profit of Zinc ore is given below.

Cost of 1 ton at site = N30, 000/MT

Cost of 60 tons = N1, 800,000

Cost of 2% PB =N93, 600 {When price is $650 and Quantity 60 tons}

Cost of transportation to site of Crushing/loading = N10, 000/3 tons

Cost of 60 tons =N200, 000{Please do know that this cost can be eliminated if the site is accessible}

Cost of Crushing @ N40/Bag = N48, 000 {since 1 ton = 20 bags of 50 KG each}

Cost of packaging = N5000

Cost loading to the truck @ N20/ Bag = N24, 000

Cost of transportation to Warehouse/Port = N180, 000/30 tons =N360, 000/60 tons

Cost of Testing =N100, 000

Cost of Freight = N78, 000/20 FT Container {Since 20 tons= one 20 FT container,

N78, 000 * 3 = N234, 000

Warehousing = N100, 000

Deposition Fee = N150, 000 {Returnable after shipment of goods}

Agent Fee = N80, 000

Miscellaneous = N100, 000

Total = N 3,294,600

The Exporter/ Seller can get a contract at $650/MT for Copper Ore 20% and Zinc Ore 50% .Given that the Pro-Rata is $10/1%, then the calculation would be

60 * $650/MT = $39,000 @ $1/N120
=N4, 680,000

Profit = N4, 680,000- N 3,294,600 = N 1,385,400

If the Zinc and Copper content is actually 52% and 22% respectively, then the calculation would be

2% * $10 = $20

$650+ $20 = $670

$670* 60 = $40,200 @ $1/N120
=N4, 824,000

Profit = N4, 824,000 - N 3,294,600

=N1, 529,400.

It is always advisable to weigh the goods at the point of purchase and preferably 51/52 KG should be used instead of 50 KG because after breaking of the material, some part would be lost to dust and debris.

{PLEASE DO NOTE THE PRICES QUOTED ABOVE FLUCTUATES AND AT SUCH THE ANALYSIS ABOVE SHOULD SERVE FOR ANALYSIS PURPOSE ONLY. THEY SHOULD NOT USED WHEN NEGOTIATING FOR POSSIBLE CONTRACT/SALES. TO GET THE CURRENT COST ANALYSIS, CONTACT THE WRITER FOR A FEASIBILITY STUDY}

In the export of the zinc ore, some of the cost to consider includes cost of the ore at the site, cost of 2% PB, cost of transportation to site of crushing/loading {in case the mining site is not accessible to trucks},cost of crushing ,cost of packaging ,cost loading to the truck ,cost of transportation to warehouse/port ,cost of analysis, cost of freight ,Warehouse cost, deposit Fee, agent fee, NESS Fee and miscellaneous

MINING AND PROCESSING OF COPPER ORE FOR EXPORT IN NIGERIA

The solid mineral industry in Nigeria is filled with a lot of investment opportunity for interested investors to take position and make good returns on their investments.

Copper ore is one of the industrial minerals that have been discovered in Nigeria and unlike other minerals; they usually occur as associate minerals in the body of the ore and at such it is therefore very difficult to estimate the quantity of copper ore in Nigeria.

Other minerals like lead and zinc usually form the main part of the body of the ore and so they are easy to quantify. To understand these better, an attempt would be made to define mineral and metal ore. Mineral is an inorganic substance found in nature with a characteristics chemical composition and in some cases, of definite crystal structure. The earth crust contains rocks of different composition with different physical properties. Some hard, some soft.

Rocks are the materials which the earth's upper crusts are made of. Rocks are themselves composed of minerals. Minerals are naturally occurring elements like Gold, or a compound such as Iron Oxide. If a rock contains a mineral from which a metal can be extracted at a profit, it is call an Ore. For example, copper Ore.

Copper is malleable and ductile, a good conductor of heat and, when very pure, a good conductor of electricity. Copper has been used as water-proof roofing material since ancient times, giving many old building their greenish roofs and domes. As a material in the manufacture of computer heat sinks, as a result of it's superior heat dissipation capacity to aluminum.

The occurrence and distribution of copper ore in Nigeria is mainly in the Northern Part of the country because of the peculiar geology of the area and they are been mined in Nassarawa, Plateau, Zamfara, Bauchi and Gombe State.

Copper ore can be exported after sorting into size and packaging. Packaging is usually in 50 Kg since the price is quoted in Metric tons. 1000/KG makes 1 ton and this helps in easy containerization of the goods since most shipping company prefer to carry 20 tons in 20 feet container. In shipping mineral ores, 20 feet container is usually preferred because of the weight of the ores.

The sorting of the ore simply refers to the breaking down of the ore into the desired sizes as agreed with the buyer. Sizes usually range from 0-50-100 mm and care must be taken while this is being done because if the product is not broken to the desired size, it might lead to a reduction in price or rejection of goods. Also buyer might want the ore in powder form but because of the cost and difficulty in getting a place to crush the lump into powder, It is not advisable a thing to do.

Ores because they vary in quality from one location to the other due to difference in the geology of the area and other factor as at the time of formation, have low and high grades. For copper ore, low grade ranges from 10%- 30% which the case with most of the copper found in Nigeria while high grade is usually from 30% above.

Though such facility do not exist in the country {and could be another investment opportunity for savvy investors to take advantage of}, the investor can sign processing agreement with foreign partners in order to add value to the copper ore to yield copper cathode which command higher price in the international market.

In the export of the copper ore, some of the cost to consider includes cost of the ore at the site, cost of 2% PB, cost of transportation to site of crushing/loading {in case the mining site is not accessible to trucks},cost of crushing ,cost of packaging ,cost loading to the truck ,cost of transportation to warehouse/port ,cost of analysis, cost of freight ,Warehouse cost, deposit Fee, agent fee, NESS Fee and miscellaneous

COAL MINING AND PROCESSING IN NIGERIA.

Solid minerals contributed immensely to the economic development of Nigeria in the pre-independence years. During this period, Nigeria was known for the production of coal as an energy source for electricity, railways and also for export.

Nigerian Coal is one of the most bituminous in the world owing to its low sulphur and ash content and therefore the most environmental friendly, given the need and campaign for cleaner source of energy in the recent past. There are nearly three billion {3,000,000,000} tonnes of indicated reserves in 17 identified coalfields and over 600 million tonnes of proven reserves in Nigeria. Some of the states where coal has been discovered in commercial quantity include Enugu, Benue, Kogi and Plateau States, respectively.

Coal is used as fuel and in industrial production of tar, gas and non edible oils. Arguably the most singular impediment to the attainment of the vision 20:2020 in Nigeria is power{ electricity} because of the direct bearing it has on other economic indicators like unemployment rate and low capacity utilization in the manufacturing sector. Nigeria has against the emphasis on gas for power generation, can tap into the rich coal deposit scattered in different parts of the country to generate electricity.

Nigeria presently generates about three thousand {3000} megawatts of electricity and it has been estimated that it would require at least forty thousand {40,000} megawatts to support her industrial and economic aspiration of being amongst the top twenty {20} economies in the world by the year 2020.

Comparatively, it has been estimated by experts that a coal powered plant would cost one-sixth the cost of powering the plant by gas and due to it use in powering railways, coal mining and processing is highly required.

Given the large deposits of brown coal in the tertiary sediments east and west of River Niger; Nigeria can cash in on foreign investors' technology to produce coal pellets for industrial use, coal briquettes for domestic use; that is, to replace firewood and fight back desert encroachment and extreme weather conditions in the Northern part of the country.

A grant of a Mining License to a prospective company is subject to proof of economic reserve of the mineral commodity for which a concession is sought.

IRON ORE MINING AND PROCESSING IN NIGERIA.

In today’s competitive world, identifying and exploit your areas of comparative advantage is the key to survival. The solid minerals industry holds the greatest potential apart from the Agricultural sector towards the attainment of the vision 20: 2020 which is geared at placing Nigeria amongst the top twenty {20} economies of the world by the year 2020 because of the rich mineral deposit in commercial quantity scattered in different parts of the country.

One of such mineral in Nigeria is Iron ore. There are over 3 billion tonnes of iron ore found in Kogi, Enugu, Niger, Zamfara and Kaduna States. The large deposit of oolific iron ores of Kogi and Enugu States are yet to be fully explored. Iron ore is used for making steel, transformer and motor cars, ferrous sulphate from waster liqueur of the steel picking process or by the direct reaction, metals for electrical shielding, electro-magnetic devices, electric bells, electric fan cage, equipment rack, instrument body, engineering works, hydrated salt, iron oxide pigments, various salts of iron and ferrites and chemicals.

The rate of steel consumption of a Nation is a direct reflection of the economical and technological advancemenet of such a Nation and if Nigeria is to increase her steel consumption from its current level, massive investment in the exploitation and processing of iron ore is required.

Nigeria’s national annual demand for iron rod which currently stands at two {2} is mostly been sourced from the recycling of waste metal scraps. Besides there are three inland rolling mills at Oshogbo, Jos and Katsina in addition to some privately owned rolling mills in Lagos, calabar and Kano. The nation also has the Aladja and Ajaokuta Steel complexes which are potential buyers of the iron ore to be produced apart from the lucrative international market.

A grant of a Mining License to a prospective company is subject to proof of economic reserve of the mineral commodity for which a concession is sought.
