BUSINESS PROCESS OUTSOURCING {BPO} IN NIGERIA

Business process outsourcing can be applied in almost every aspect and segment of business and some of the areas include Information Technology, Telecommunications, Maritime, Banking, Manufacturing etc

In outsourcing, we have the in-source, in which you are sourcing the services within the shores in which the company is located while out-source is a situation whereby the services are sourced from outside the shore of the country where the company is domiciled.

Business Process Outsourcing has now become an avenue to multinational companies to outsource certain areas of their business operations to other parties to handle for them.

Business process outsourcing services in Nigeria is still at the developing stage and this could be attributed to lack of information about the subject matter in the country .It is mostly deplored in the telecommunication industry because the industry is largely controlled by foreign entities with a well grounded knowledge of the benefit and use of business process outsourcing.

With the recent creation of the Association of Outsourcing Practitioners of Nigeria {AOPN}, the industry is set for growth.

COWPEA {BEANS} DECORTICATING AND DE-STONING SERVICE IN NIGERIA.

Though much of the countries revenue is earned through royalty from oil and gas production, it is widely agreed that Agriculture has the potential of been the bedrock of the Nigerian economy, because of the abundance of good arable land, good climatic condition and cheap labour.

However, in spite of the nations natural endowment in agricultural resources, the potential of the sector is yet to be fully realized due to the fact majority of the production is still done with crude implement which brings about a lot of drudgery and makes agriculture less attractive to the youth which constitutes over 60% of the population.

Nigeria is produces a lot of agricultural products which includes cowpea {beans}.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is a grain legume largely grown in the northern part of Nigeria which has a savannah type of vegetation with light rainfall. Nigeria is the world's largest producer of cowpea, as it produces over 2.7 million metric tones of cowpeas with an average yield per hectare of 417 kg. It produces the white and brown varieties.

One major achievement of the present civilian administration in Nigeria in the past eleven (11) years has been the growth of middle class which has been witnessed in the country. These growths continues to drive the increasing social and health awareness of the need for hygienically well prepared foods required for good quality living standard of the people.

This much has continued to create the demand for better processed or decorticated cowpea {bean} seed required for human consumption. Decortication is a process of removing the husk covering the seed of a plant, in this case cowpea seed. Groundnut is another agricultural produce that requires decortication.

After the product has been decorticated, they are taken to the de-stoning machine to remove the stones, after which they would be ready for packing and sale in the market.

In terms in of cost, cowpea presents one the best option for the nation to meet her protein need. Nigeria, with a population of about 150 million people is grossly underprovided with an essential food component, protein. For example, data from the FOS, CBN, and FAO indicate that from cattle, less than 2kg of beef is available to an average Nigerian per year and just mere 4kg of eggs per annum is available to each Nigerian. In fact, milk production has been nose diving or at best has remained constant since 1994.

This scenario is compounded more so when the volume of egg supply is very low, being 10.56g per person per day as compared with the usual recommendation that an egg should be consumed by an adult per day.

Establishing a cowpea decorticating and de-stone services in agricultural is no doubt a viable business and would bring us closer to meeting our protein demands.

TOURISM; AN ESSENTIAL DEVELOPMENT TOOL IN NIGERIA.

The rapid growth of the modern tourism industry which, in 2005 registered approximately 800 million international tourist arrivals worldwide has made the tourism industry one of the most important industries of the world, particularly in economic terms.

Tourism a business activities connected with providing accommodation services and entertainment for people who are visiting a place for pleasure, has been identified as one of the key segment of the Nigerian economy that requires to be harnessed and developed if the vision 20: 2020 of making Nigeria rank amongst the top 20 economies by the year 2020 is to be achieved.

This is no doubt that the country has potential in the different segment of tourism like Eco- Tourism , Cultural Tourism though the incidence of domestic leisure travel may be low, the sheer size of Nigeria’s population means that there is a significant contribution to the demand for tourism services from domestic travel activity.

Some of the tourism site in Nigeria includes Tinapa Business, Leisure and Conference Resort, Yankari Game reserves and other game reserves, Olokola Cultural Resort, Museum scattered in different part of the country, Ogunike Cave, Olumo Rock amongst others.

As part of the drive to achieve development in the sector, the federal government in 2005 launched the Tourism Master Plan for Nigeria with the central issue around the plan being poverty alleviation and generation of employment, physical environmental
enhancement and cultural and social issues, including HIV /Aids.

In Nigeria, the potential market segments for development are likely to be leisure (new
experience seekers; Nigeria’s Diaspora; special interest; expatriate community;
family holidays), conference and meetings, visiting friends and relatives (VFR),
religious sports and other events.

The revenue generated from travel within the country by employees and staff of Federal Government departments and agencies generates a demand for an estimated US$68m/N8.8b of transport and hospitality sectors while Spending by international tourists has a direct impact on the national economy estimated at US$280m/N36b.

VEGETABLE OIL PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITIES

Any nation that requires development must look inwards to identify areas where it has comparative advantage over other nations and seek to develop the identified areas.

Apart from hydrocarbon, Nigeria has comparative in the Agricultural sector where a variety of products are produced due to the favorable climatic condition ,good soil condition and the fact that over 70% of the entire land mass of the country is arable.

Vegetable oil are edible oil used as cooking or frying oil at homes and industrially ,they are used in the production of soaps, cream, butter and margarine. It is liquid at room temperature and when pure is golden yellow in colour. Cake a bye-product in the production of vegetable is very useful in the production of animal feeds.

The project involves the processing of oil bearing seed for the production of vegetable oil. The equipment required for production depends on the raw material used and at such the basic equipment required are crusher, toaster, filter press and refining plant. Other equipment includes receiving tanks, weighing scale and project vehicle. The envisaged output are vegetable oil and cake, the latter been used in livestock feed production.

The raw material that can be used as feedstock for the plant include soya bean, palm kernel seed, sunflower seed, cotton seed, groundnut seed, sesame and melon seed.

Nigeria is the second largest producer of sesame seed in Africa, producing about 120,000 MT annually .About 65% of the annual production is processed into oil and 35% used as food. The country also produces all of the feedstocks and at such raw materials for start-up would be a problem.

The manufacturing process would be dependent on the raw material used for production. When the raw material is groundnut seed, the nuts would first be placed in the decorticating machine where the kernel would be separated from the husk. The kernel is then placed in the kettle for boiling, then to the expeller after which the product is taken to the filter process where the oils is extracted leaving behind the cake.

With mild modification, the manufacturing process for all other raw material is similar to same outlined above.

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AND PROVISION IN NIGERIA.

Arguably one of the best investment vehicle in the world is real estate development owning to a number of factors which includes the fact that shelter {housing} is one of the basic need of man, fixed supply of land and the ever increasing value of properties with time.

Nigeria with her current population estimated at over one hundred and forty million {140,000,000} growing at a rate of 3.5% per annum has a short fall in the supply of housing units that as been estimated to be between 16 – 17 million.

With an economic growth rate of 5.7% per annum in the past five {5}years ,Nigeria has witnessed a growth in the number of middle class families with the associated need to have a home of there own ,thereby further deepening the real estate market in Nigeria.

It is on record that over 60% of the entire population of the country lives on rented accommodation. This indicates another latent market in the real estate industry in Nigeria.

It is obvious that the government both at the federal and state level in the country can not meet the housing needs of the country and at such would desire partnership with willing and interested investors in the areas. The model of partnership could be that the government would provide the fixed asset {land} while the private investors would come in with their funds and expertise.

For more on public-private opportunities in Nigeria, please do visit http://www.nigeriabusinessplace.com/ , register and click on the public private partnership board and start your rewarding contributions. Partnership would also be required between private businesses in the development of real estate opportunities in Nigeria.
