BENEFICIATION AND PROCESSING OF MINERALS IN NIGERIA.

Investment opportunities in the solid minerals industry in Nigeria tends to be focused on the mining and trading aspect of the industry , thereby leaving the processing and beneficiation aspect to suffer.

It is common knowledge that most of the minerals sold in the country are sold in the raw form with any value addition in order to derive more revenue from the products mined therefore leading to great amount of lost.

Like was mentioned in one of my articles, the lack/insufficient supply of processing facilities in Nigeria is one of the biggest problem in the industry. There presence would activate the use of high tech facilities in the mining industry in Nigeria, increase output ,create employment and open the door for foreign investment in the sector.

Virtually every mineral can be beneficiated. Beneficiation is a process of increasing the ore concentrate of a mineral through mechanical means. For instance, the increase of tin ore of 5% concentration to 50% concentration.

Some of the equipment required for the beneciation of the tin ore is given below

ELECTROMAGNETIC VIBRATION FEEDER
BALL MILL
SPIRAL CLASSIFIER
AGITATING TANK
FLOTATION MACHINE

Beneficiation increases the percentage of a particle mineral in the gang body thereby adding value to the product and the market price it commands. Without beneciation, the price of tin ore 5% in the international market would be around $200/mt but with beneciation to 50%, the price at the international market would be around $ 2000/mt, same could be said for lead, zircon sand, talc, tantalite, Kaolin, Zinc, Copper etc.

HOW TO MAKE HUGE PROFIT PRODUCING ICE BLOCKS IN NIGERIA

Water can exist in three states namely gaseous, liquid and solid. At room temperature, they exist in the liquid form and if heated to temperature above 100 degrees, it evaporates at water vapour. At temperature below 0 degrees, water exists in the solid form. Ice blocks are produced by a deliberate conditioning of water in freezers and ice block machine, in order to create cooling effects on beverages. These cooling effects are required given the condition of the weather condition in Nigeria especially during dry seasons.

A lot of factors like the epileptic power supply from PHCN and traffic congestion would continue to drive the demand for Ice blocks in the country.

Though ice block is an everyday business, it is also a seasonal business and the rate of returns on investment is a function of the season. The product is usually more in demand in the dry season.

The market for ice block is national and with the population of Nigeria growing at 3.5% per annum, the market is growing and sustainable. Buyers cuts across different segment of the society to include Hospitals/clinics, hawkers, restaurants, party host and shop owners.

There are basically two types of ice block namely

1. Dry Ice
2. Anti-freeze Ice

Dry Ice: This is the type of ice block made with polythene {nylon} bags and is the sizes are a function of the nylon bags.

Anti- freeze Ice: This involves the use of chemicals to make the block form faster that the required time. They are usually in containers and ice block formed through this method are called mould.

Ice block making machine usually comes in different capacity, efficiency and price. There is also the locally fabricated and the imported models.

The capacity and efficiency of the machine is usually tied to the number of ice blocks that can be produced under a given time usually 12 hours or 24 hours. Some of the capacities available include 60 moulds, 100 moulds, 120 moulds and 200 moulds of ice block per 12 hours.

Other machines required to start operations includes generator, accommodation, nylon bags and a source of water.

OPERATING A CRANE AND FORKLIFT SERVICE IN NIGERIA.

Though truck haulage is a viable business in Nigeria since virtually all movement and transportation of heavy goods and equipment has to be done with it due to the collapse of railway transportation in Nigeria years back but because of the non-specialized nature and relatively small start-up capital required to commerce the business, makes it easy for new entrance into the business and the competition for available services in the industry. This factor has seriously affected profit realizable from the business over the years. Succeeding in the haulage business in Nigeria requires that the entrepreneur identifies and creates a niche market / service in the industry.

The operation of crane and forklift rental and leasing services is one of such niche market in the haulage industry. Cranes are used in the lifting and transportation of heavy duty equipment like generators, PHCN transformers and poles and containers over long distances while forklifts are used in the lifting and transportation of goods over short distances.

These machines come in different design, capacity and function. For the crane, there is the twenty {20} tones cranes, that is, cranes that can carry twenty {20} tones of load and below. There is also the self loader and as the name implies, this is a crane that can load itself. The low bed crane is used in the transportation of earth moving equipments like excavators and graders.

Cranes and forklift rental and leasing services are required in different sectors of the economy which includes telecommunication, power, maritime, manufacturing and construction.

Although transportation and haulage business is as old as mankind, crane and forklift rental and leasing business seems not to be pronounced because of the unique nature of the kind of services provided.

The business has a National market but most concentrated around the commercial centers like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan,Kaduna ,Aba ,Kano to mention a few. With the average economic growth rate put at 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria surely has an expanding and sustainable market for crane and forklift rental and leasing services.

Crane and forklift services could be complemented adding excavators and graders to services the entrepreneur offers. Excavators are highly utilized in the construction and mining industry. With the exception of the quarry industry, mining in Nigeria is still done at the artisan level with crude implements like diggers and shovels and at such output is low. In order to move forward and increase the output of the mines, a lot of mine owner now demand for the services of excavator leasing companies.

There is no doubt about the market for crane and forklift services in Nigeria but the entrepreneur would have to conduct a market survey to identify potential customers ,market size and marketing strategies.
