MUSCOVITE MICA SHEET EXPORT IN NIGERIA ; NON-OIL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY SERIES.

Nigeria is endowed with several mineral commodities which are widely distributed. The Country was once a major mineral producer, accounting for substantial production of Cassiterite (tin), Gold, Coal, Lead/Zinc Sulphides, Tantalite and Columbite.

The Geology of Nigeria is comparable to those of other countries where world class deposits have been found. There are over thirty-four mineral commodities spread across the entire Country.

Some of the known mineral resources include: Gold, Coal, Bitumen, Iron Ore, Tantalite/Columbite, Lead/Zinc Sulphides, Barytes, Cassiterite, Gemstones, Talc, Feldspar and Muscovite mica.

Muscovite is a phyllosilicate mineral of aluminium and potassium. It has a highly-perfect basal cleavage yielding remarkably-thin laminæ (sheets) which are often highly elastic.

Muscovite is the most common mica, found in granites, pegmatites, gneisses, and schist’s, and as a contact metamorphic rock or as a secondary mineral resulting from the alteration of topaz, feldspar, kyanite, etc. In pegmatites, it is often found in immense sheets that are commercially valuable. Muscovite is in demand for the manufacture of fireproofing and insulating materials and to some extent as a lubricant. The name of muscovite comes from Muscovy-glass, a name formerly used for the mineral because of its use in Russia for windows.

Nigeria has a large deposit of muscovite mica and is mainly concentrated in the Northern Part of the country because of the peculiar geology of the area. Some of states in Nigeria where muscovite can be found include Kogi, Nassarawa,Cross River, Kaduna, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Kastina, Kebbi, Kogi, Ogun, Osun, Plateau and FCT.

Muscovite is in demand for the manufacture of fireproofing and insulating materials and to some extent as a lubricant. The demand for the commodity is strong and growing. Mica is supplied in two forms: scrap/flake and sheet. Some producing countries specify only on one form (like USA or Brazil), some can produce both (like Russia). Mica finds its main use as a gypsum wallboard joint compound, where it acts as a filler and extender, provides a smoother consistency, improves workability, and prevents cracking. Therefore scrap/flake mica volumes are much higher than sheet.

World leader in mica production is China with over 30% market share. Second place is held by USA having 27.3% of world output.

The return on investment in the export of muscovite mica sheets is estimated between 10- 15%.

Kola is usually in two varieties namely bitter kola and kola nuts. Though the focus of this manual is on bitter kola, It is important to note that kola nuts is further sub-divided into Gworo and Igbo Oji. While gworo is mostly consumed in the Northern part of the country, Igbo oji is mostly consumed in the Eastern part of the country, where they play a very significant role in the custom and tradition of the people.

Kola trees are natives of central and West Africa and are distinguished primarily by the medicinal and stimulant properties of their nuts, barks and leaves.

DRIED HIBISCUS FLOWER EXPORT IN NIGERIA; NON-OIL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY SERIES

Until the late 1970’s when hydrocarbon was discovered in commercial quantity in Oloibiri, present day Bayelsa state, Agriculture remained the mainstay of the economy contributing over 90% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country as against the less than 40% it now contributes with crop production accounting for an estimated 85%, livestock 10% and the balance made up by fisheries and forestry.

Any nation that requires economic development must look inwards to identify areas where it has comparative advantage over other nations and seek to develop the identified areas.

Apart from hydrocarbon, Nigeria has comparative in the Agricultural sector where a variety of products are produced due to the favorable climatic condition ,good soil condition and the fact that over 70% of the entire land mass of the country is arable.

One of such product that is been produced in Nigeria is Hibiscus flower. Hibiscus flowers are multi colored and varied and an annual herb cultivated for its leaves, stem, seed and calyces. It grows nearly throughout the year, though its peak production is during the dry season of November to April of the following year.

Hibiscus flowers are multi colored and varied. About 200 species of hibiscus are known to exist, and each species has its own unique kind of flower. Hibiscus flowers are alternate, ovate to lanceolate leafs, often with a toothed or lobed margin.

The flowers are large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals, color from white to pink, red, orange, purple or yellow, and from 4–18 cm broad. Flower color in certain species, such as H. mutabilis and H. tiliaceus, changes with age. The fruit is a dry five-lobed capsule, containing several seeds in each lobe, which are released when the capsule dehisces (splits open) at maturity. It is of red and white colours.

In Nigeria, Hibiscus flower grows nearly throughout the year, though its peak production is during the dry season of November to April of the following year.

Dried hibiscus flower are used in the production f hibiscus tea. Hibiscus tea is a caffeine free herbal tea from a special type of hibiscus, called Roselle, the scientific name is Hibiscus sabdarrifa. Specifically, the tea is made out of the dried fruit part of Roselle, called calyx. It is in red color and tastes like berries.

Dried Hibiscus flower grows in various States of Nigeria including Kano , Katsina, Jigawa,Bauchi and Maiduguri States. It is a medicinal herb and health food product used in the production of tea.

The primary import markets for the dried calyx of hibiscus sabdariffa are the United States and Germany. England is not a regular importer of the product as imported herbal tea from Germany satisfies most market demand. There are no statistics for the volume and value of dried hibiscus imported into these markets

The major clients for hibiscus importers are herbal tea manufacturers as the dried calyx is used as part of the base for most herbal teas along with apple peel, orange peel and lemon twist.

The United States imported over 5 thousand MTs (US$22 million) of plants and plant parts for use in herbal teas in 1998, an increase of 78 percent in volume and 156 percent in value from 1994 levels. Herbal teas have soared in popularity over the past five years in the United States; even the major coffee chains have started selling this product.

Germany is an even larger importer of herbal tea ingredients. Imports totaled nearly 43 thousand MTs or ECU 90 million (US$97 million) in 1997 for plants and plant parts for use in herbal teas, medicines and perfumes, an increase of 41 percent in volume and 72 percent in value over 1993 levels.

Hibiscus is available from Thailand, Sudan, China, Mexico, and various other smaller producing nations including Nigeria, Egypt, Senegal, Tanzania, Mali, and Jamaica. China is the dominant supplier to the US according to importers surveyed. Thailand, Mexico and Egypt supply smaller amounts of hibiscus. The preference is for Sudanese product, but the US trade embargo on the Sudan has forced importers to source Sudanese product via Germany and at a considerable mark-up.

Sudan dominates the German import market. German herbal tea manufacturers consider Sudanese hibiscus to have the perfect color blend and taste for herbal tea bases, but also source hibiscus from China and Thailand and much smaller quantities from Egypt and Mexico.

The return on investment on the export of dried hibiscus flower is estimated between 10- 15%.

SOYA BEANS EXPORT IN NIGERIA ; NON-OIL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY SERIES

The soybean (U.S.) or soya bean (UK) (Glycine max)is a species of legume native to East Asia, widely grown for its edible bean which has numerous uses. The plant is classed as an oilseed rather than a pulse by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

Fat-free (defatted) soybean meal is a significant and cheap source of protein for animal feeds and many prepackaged meals;soy vegetable oil is another product of processing the soybean crop. For example, soybean products such as textured vegetable protein (TVP) are ingredients in many meat and dairy analogues. Soybeans produce significantly more protein per acre than most other uses of land.

Nigeria presently produces about 500,000 MT of Soybean annually making it the largest producer of the product on the African continent. Soybean is a legume which is produced in most the middle belt of the country with Benue state accounting for about 45% of the total production in country.

In Nigeria, soya beans are mostly produced in the middle belt with benue state accounting for over 70% of the production in Nigeria. Some of the states producing soya beans in Nigeria include Kwara, Kogi, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Nassarawa, Kaduna, Niger, Bauchi, Ogun, and Taraba states. Other states are Adamawa, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Jigawa, Lagos, Plateau, Ekiti and the Federal Capital Territory.

Soybeans are an important source of high quality and inexpensive protein and oil. With an average protein content of 40% and oil content of 20%, soybean has the highest protein content of all food crops and is second only to groundnut in terms of oil content amongst food legumes. Soybeans are used in the production of milk, edible oil and animal feed. It’s high protein content and price makes it the best option in terms of treating malnutrition and would continue to expand the international market for the product which currently is estimated at US$40 billion.

Nigeria currently produces soybean worth $85 million in the international market and though most of the nation’s soybean is consumed locally where they are used in the production of soymilk and specially formulated foods to help malnourished infants and children, the international market for the product is growing and sustainable.

GROUNDNUT {PEANUT} EXPORT IN NIGERIA; NON-OIL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY SERIES

Peanut, or groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), is a species in the legume or "bean" family (Fabaceae). The peanut was probably first cultivated in the valleys of Peru.

It is an annual herbaceous plant growing 30 to 50 cm (1.0 to 1.6 ft) tall. The leaves are opposite, pinnate with four leaflets (two opposite pairs; no terminal leaflet), each leaflet 1 to 7 cm (⅜ to 2¾ in) long and 1 to 3 cm (⅜ to 1 inch) broad. The flowers are a typical peaflower in shape, 2 to 4 cm (0.8 to 1.6 in) (¾ to 1½ in) across, yellow with reddish veining.

Hypogaea means "under the earth", after pollination, the flower stalk elongates causing it to bend until the ovary touches the ground. Continued stalk growth then pushes the ovary underground where the mature fruit develops into a legume pod, the peanut – a classical example of geocarpy. Pods are 3 to 7 cm (1.2 to 2.8 in) long, containing 1 to 4 seeds.

Groundnuts also have a variety of industrial end uses. Paint, varnish, lubricating oil, leather dressings, furniture polish, insecticides, and nitroglycerin are made from groundnut oil. Soap is made from saponified oil, and many cosmetics contain groundnut oil and its derivatives. The protein portion of the oil is used in the manufacturing of some textile fibres. Groundnut shells are used in the manufacture of plastic, wallboard, abrasives, fuel, cellulose (used in rayon and paper) and mucilage (glue).

Groundnuts are also used for food and as an ingredient in confectionery products. After the extraction of oil, the residual cake is processed largely for animal feed, but is also used for human consumption.

Nigeria currently produces about two million MT representing 5% of world production and in the period between 1956 and 1967, groundnuts including its cake and oil, accounted for about 70 per cent of Nigeria’s total export earnings and created the legendary groundnut pyramids which dotted the landscape of Kano. Some of the other states where groundnut is produced in Nigeria include Kwara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Bauchi, Katsina, Zamfara, Nassarawa and most of the northern states.

Groundnut is the 13th most important food crop of the world. It is the world’s 4th most important source of edible oil and 3rd most important source of vegetable protein. Groundnut seeds contain high quality edible oil (50%), easily digestible protein (25%) and carbohydrate (20%).

Because of it numerous uses, groundnuts are in great demand and this opens an opportunity for interested investors to export the product.

It is important that the exporter takes note of the aflatoxin level in the commodity before exporting if not the commodity would be rejected at the point of entry. Aflatoxins are naturally occurring mycotoxins that are produced by many species of Aspergillus, a fungus, the most notable ones being Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Aflatoxins are toxic and among the most carcinogenic substances known.

The return on investment on the export of ground nuts is estimated between 10%- 15%.
