INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE PLASTIC INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA

At this crucial time of scarce resources, massive unemployment and poverty, there is need for retirees, enterprenuers, graduates and indeed others who want something doing to go into the production of polyethylene bags popularly called nylon bags.

There is no doubt that polyethylene material is the preferred choice of manufacturers in the packaging of there products in Nigeria and this can be attributed to a number of factors to include the fact the they are cost effective and easier to produce compared to steel iron or glass.

As a raw material, polyethylene material are used in the production of plastic bottles, buckets, chairs, tables, combs, footwear cutting across different sectors of the economy to include cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food and beverages and petroleum.

Polyethylene or polythene is the most widely used plastic, with an annual production of approximately 80 million metric tons. Its primary use is within packaging notably the plastic shopping bag.

Polyethylene is classified into several different categories based mostly on its density and branching. The most important polyethylene grades are HDPE, LLDPE and LDPE.

The plastic industry in Nigeria is one that can accommodate different kinds of investor’s namely small, medium and large scale and an attempt would be made to analyze the opportunities available in each of this segment of the market.

Scale Scale:

In the small scale sector, opportunities exist in the production of nylon bags used for packaging of sugar, garri, bread, salt and other such food items. Production at these strata is usually without a jumbo extruder machine. The machine required are cutting and sealing machine, die-cutting machine ,generator etc.The product are cut from the extruded polythene film rolls purchased from any of the plastic producing companies . The high density polyethylene is used to make shopping bags while the low density polyethylene is used in the production of breading wrappers. The film rolls are then feed into the machine which cuts and seals the bags in different sizes required. The open end of the shopping bags is die-cut for easy handling. No die-cutting is required for the bread wrappers.

Medium Scale:

The medium scale requires more start-up capital that the small scale because of the addition of the jumbo extruder machine. It offers the investor reduced operating cost and an opportunity to make more money from the extruder machine itself. Depending on the financial strength of the investor, a waste nylon and plastic recycling plant can be added to the equipment inventory.

Polythene Shopping bags are produced with a jumbo extruder machine. They are produced with either virgin or reprocessed materials depending on the colour you want to achieve.

About N8, 100 is required to process a bag of 25 kg of raw material and a profit margin of about N2500 is feasible on a bag.

The cost of start-up usually would depend on the scope the investors wants to deploy and if the machine would be automatic or not. The source would also affect the cost outlay.

Large Scale: This segment of investment targets the production of plastic bottles, buckets, combs, footwear etc. Obviously it requires more capital investment. Plastic bottles are cylindrical containers made out of different types of resins that are manipulated to form a plastic for everyday use. Plastic bottles are ideal for holding a variety of liquids such as water ,juice, milk, shampoo, gasoline, oil, liquid detergent and the use cuts across different sectors of the economy to include pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, cosmetics and petroleum .These strata is usually controlled by Indians and Chinese in Nigeria.

COW SLAUGHTERING, PROCESSING AND PACKAGING: AN UNTAPPED GOLDMINE IN NIGERIA.

A lot as been said about the multiplicity use of the various parts of an oil palm trees and it is widely agree no tropical tree meets it when it come to these. Cows are one livestock that seems comparable to oil palm tree because of the various uses which it different parts can be put into. No seems to be a waste, even their dung’s can be processed into fertilizers and used to nourish plants.

Beef produced from the slaughtering and processing of cow are good source of protein and the bones and blood sold for feed millers to be processed into bone and blood meal respectively used mainly in the poultry industry. The horns and hoofs are used in the production of fertilizers and buttons while the hides and skin are further processed and used in the production of shoes, wallets, belts and watch straps amongst others.

Due to the usefulness of the component parts of a cow, different industries can be attached to the slaughtering, processing and packaging of the product and this is where the government should come in and create the enabling environment to stimulate more investment in this sector because of the benefit of employment generation and increase in the gross domestic product {GDP} of the country amongst others.

Some of the industries attached to these single livestock include the following mince meat processing plant, operating a cold room ,meat delivery vans, operating a ranch, operating a abattoir, bone meal processing plant, blood meal processing plant, hide and skin processing plant and horn and hoof processing plant.

Mince Meat Processing Plant:

There is a growing need for hygienically prepared and package beef product in Nigeria and this is basically been fueled by the growing middle class income earners in the country. This trend is further deepen by the need for hygienically prepared and package beef by corporate consumers and used in the production of sausage rolls ,meat pies ,gala etc. Some of the corporate clients that require the product include hotels, supermarkets,
fast food eateries and multi-nationals like UAC.

Operating Cold Room Service:

Attaching a cold room to an abattoir is a very lucrative because beefs have a limited shelf live if not properly stored and storage is usually done after the slaughtering, processing and packaging of the product from where it is sold to retail consumers who usually buy bit by bit. The scope of the cold room should be dependent on the size of the market in question.

Meat Delivery Vans:

At least in Lagos it is an offense to sell beef in unhygienic conditions and the Lagos state government pioneered the use of special vans in the transportation of beefs from the abattoir to consumers. This is created another market for savvy investors to tap into make good returns on investment .Transportation can be intercity or intracity and we expect this is replicated in other states of the federal.

Operating a Ranch:

Apart from a few well established cattle ranch in the country with organized management system in place, cattle rearing are mostly done by Fulani herdsmen who move from one location to another in search of water and pasture for the stock and they largely operate with less managerial ability hence get little for there effort. There exists a large for interested investors that want to invest and run a ranch in Nigeria. The opportunities are so great because the market for your product is guaranteed. The investor can choice to buy from the Fulani herdsmen and sell in abattoir in Lagos and other city across the country. The business can be started with a average of N 3 Million and returns of N 800,000 is feasible.

Operating an Abattoir:

About 300 hundred cows are slaughtered in Lagos abattoir on a daily basis. Buyers of cow parts are readily available because cow meat is about the most common and readily available source of protein in Nigeria. Operators of the abattoir depending on their financial strength decide to only provide the physical structure and only tenant to operate shops from there with their tools and pay royalties to you as agreed.

Operating a Bone and Blood Meal Processing Plant:

Another associated business venture which the investor can decide to operate is a bone/blood meal processing plant though the latter is not common in the country. With unemployment so high in the country most youth and retiree now prefer to engage in one form of business or the other, poultry business because of its short gestation and less electricity input requirements is one of the preferred investment destination. Because more than 60 % of operating cost is expended on feeding, operating a bone and blood meal processing plant would greatly yield good returns on investment. You can read on write-up on operating a poultry farm in Nigeria on my blogsite at www.farriconsultingng.blogspot.com

Hide and Skin Processing Plant:

Hides and skin is by far the less utilized bye-product of cows in Nigeria because of conflicting interest. In Nigeria, Pomo {the skin of cow after undergoing processing} is a very most loved meat and this makes the product to be scare. There exist a very large and growing market for hide and skin in China and other parts of the world and as far as the demands for shoes, bags, belts and other such product which makes use of leather as there raw material continues to grow , the demand for hide and skin would continue to increase.

Horn and Hoof Processing Plant:

Processing of horn and hoof in the country would certainly generate lots of funds for the investor because not many company are into it. Horn and hoof can be used in the production of fertilizers, buttons and so many other products.

GEMSTONE EXPORT RICHES IN NIGERIA.

There is no doubting the fact that the solid mineral industry presents one of the best options for the diversification of Nigeria's monolithic economy owning to the large deposits of minerals that have been discovered in the country. About 35 minerals have so far in commercial quantity in the country. Nigeria is also blessed with different types of gemstones like topaz, tourmaline, sapphire scattered in different parts of the country.

A gemstone or gem (also called a precious or semi-precious stone, or jewel) is a piece of attractive mineral, which—when cut and polished—is used to make jewelry or other adornments.
Most gemstones are hard, but some soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their lustre or other physical properties that have aesthetic value. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone

Precious stone is usually valued based on the quality and not quantity and based on this, it is guided by the 4C rules namely Colour, Cut, Carat Weight and Clarity.

Colour: Color is typically the most important value-setting factor for gemstones. All gems have a preferred color or a relatively small range of preferred colors. The more the colour varies from this range -- lighter or darker, more vivid or less -- the less valuable the stone.Colour is composed of three dimensions: hue, tone, and saturation.

Hue refers to the impression of color usually noticed immediately, such as red, yellow or blue.

Tone refers to the degree of lightness or darkness of an object.

Saturation defines the degree of purity of a hue.

Cut: Cut refers to the shape or design of a stone, arrangement of facets, as well as the precision of the stone's proportions and finish. The cutting process reveals the beauty of a gem.

Gemstones are cut into shapes we are familiar with such as oval, emerald, pear, round, and marquise. in addition, they can be carved or fashioned into almost any design imaginable. Proportions involve the balance and appeal of the basic design. Finish refers to the detail of the workmanship. A well-proportioned cut with a fine finish will show a stone's optical properties to its fullest potential. When all other factors are even (color, clarity, and carat weight), a better-cut gem will be more valuable.

Carat Weight: The size of a gemstone is measured, not by its dimensions, but by weight. One carat, the traditional unit of measurement for gemstones, is equal to approximately 0.2 grams. You may also hear the weight of a gemstone referred to in points. A point is equal to 1/100 of a carat; therefore a 75-point gemstone equals 0.75 carat.

Two different gemstones may have the same dimensions but different weights. This is due to the specific gravity or density of the gem mineral. This difference can help gemologists identify a gemstone.

Up to a certain point, the larger a stone is, the rarer it is and the higher the price it will command. For stones that commonly occur in larger sizes, the value may decrease if the gem reaches a size that makes it impractical for jewelry use. Source: Gemological Institute of America
For convenience gemstones dimensions are given in millimeters for describing the general size and shape of a stone.

Clarity: A gemstone's clarity grade is directly related to its rarity. Clarity refers to a gemstone's relative freedom from clarity characteristics. Clarity characteristics include inclusions, which lie within the stone, or blemishes, which lie on the surface of a gem. The fewer clarity characteristics, the more rare the gemstone.

Each variety of gemstone has its own clarity standards. For example, Tanzanite is virtually inclusion-free, while Emerald almost always contains clarity characteristics. For this reason, Gemological Institute of America's grading system divides transparent colored gemstones into three clarity types. This allows gems to be more evenly evaluated as it takes into account the individual nature of each gemstone. Each type is further divided into five grading descriptions.

The combination of these 4c usually affects the price the product is sold.

Preciuos stones have a well established market in North America, Europe and Asian countries. The market is guaranteed and can take up as much quantity as supplied by the seller without having any adverse effect on the price. In fact the more the quantity the better your bargaining power.

The price can increase by as much as between 20%-50% when the product is cut.

It is pertinent to state at this stage that the business of gemstone export in Nigeria has been going on for quite sometime and only a few people are benefitting from it because of lack of information.

As we approach another raining season when the product would be in abundance ,another window of opportunity is open for willing and ready investors especially Nigerians living abroad who want to partner with us for success in the export of the product.

SMILE TO THE BANK PRODUCING DRINKING STRAW IN NIGERIA.

It is often common to hear people say “ONE MAN’S MEAT IS ANOTHER MAN’S POISION” owning to the diversity in want’s, need’s, desires, race, culture, position and location of humans. In business however, “ONE MAN’S PROBLEM IS ANOTHER MAN’S SOURCE OF INCOME “ and this is the basis on which ALL business are founded and built from the very large corporation like Coca Cola ,Microsoft, MTN to the road side shops, identifying a problem and providing solution to it at the best rate available.

Believe it or not, the plastic industry in Nigeria is a goldmine. The use plastics has become pat of our everyday life because they have been found to be less expensive and easier to produce compared to steel iron and glass.

Hence, manufacturers have taken it upon themselves to creatively produce plastic products that make life easier for their clients and rake in profits. Some of the products include plastic bottles {containers}, straws, buckets, footwear etc.

The industry allows investment from small, medium and large scale investors and one of the areas where investors can invest and make good return on investment is in the area of production of straw. Little investment is witnessed in this area of plastic production because of lack of information, therefore less number of people is operating the business and these gives more room for savvy investors that are willing and ready to take advantage of these.

Straw is a product of convenience which provides comfort for children that makes up about 40% of our entire population of about 140 million people and even adults while drinking the liquid content in a container.

A drinking straw is a short tube used for transferring a liquid - usually a drink from one location to another (such as from a cup, to one's mouth).

One particular advantage of using a straw when drinking is the reduction of tooth decay. Many soft drinks have acidic properties, and using a straw reduces the liquid contact with the teeth, reducing tooth decay and the risk of cavities. There are basically two types. Those with a single colour and those with multiple colours produced by different machines. They can be produced from virgin or reprocessed materials.

The market for straws in Nigeria is large and expanding because of the large population of children whom are the chief users of the product in the country. The market continues to grow especially with the expansion and increase in the number of fast food outlets and restaurants occasioned by the large number of children and young adults they continue to attract daily. Straw is one of those products that you use once and dispose off and this would continue to make the product in hot demand.

The investor can choose to produce customized straw for fast food outlets or produce for the general public.

Plastic production in Nigeria is controlled by Indians and Chinese because they have mastered the technology of plastic production and at such the plant would to sourced from India from one of the best manufacturers of the plant and the ideal location would be where the investor can easily source for raw material and market. The investor can choose to add a recycling plant to the scope of operation in order to reduce the operating cost.

The proposed straw production plant will take a estimated sum of N 3,900,000 to establish as shown below

Preliminary Investment N 200,000
Accommodation N 700,000
Plant & Machinery N 2,000,000
Working Capital N 1,000,000

Total N 3,900,000

CANDLE STICK PRODUCTION CAN MAKE YOU RICH IN NIGERIA.

It is high time our graduates start to think of starting up there won business instead of waiting for white collar job which at the end of the day makes one dependent on a monthly source of revenue.

The present economic, social and political environment in Nigeria has created an enabling environment for the success of certain businesses in the country especially in the energy sector.

Nigeria currently generates about 3200 mega watts of electricity for her over 140 million citizens across the country. This is a far out cry from the 10,000 mega watts current electricity demand in the country and a projected 60,000 mega watts required in 2020 when the country is expected to be amongst the top 20 economies of the world according to the vision 20:2020 of the present administration.

This deficit in electricity generation, distribution and transmission in the country has lead to a situation whereby people now generate their own power through the use small generators otherwise known as “I pass my neighbour” and the consequent increase in the cost of fuel used to power these generators.

Our attention would not be on the investment opportunities available in the marketing and distribution of generators and diesel but on the opportunities available to savvy investors to take advantage of the lack of power to engage in the production of candle to the over 70% of over 140 million people living below poverty line and unable to afford a generating set.

The market for candle in Nigeria is large, expanding and sustainable and it is mainly dominated by foreign brands from China even though the product can be produced in the country.

Apart from home use which constitutes about 80% of the market share, candles are used in religious activities, decorations amongst other things. The market is not stratified, that is, it is used by all and sundry in respect of age, class or sex.

Not only those government policies of encouraging the development of small and medium scale enterprise a plus for the business also the increasing population of the country will continue to expand the market and give you more market share especially with the current state of the energy sector in Nigeria.

Though the machine can be sourced from abroad, the locally fabricated machine is equally good. The ideal location for the plant would be where the investor can easily source the raw material and market.

Depending on the scope of operation, the plant can be accommodated in a shop for small scale production and in a warehouse for large scale production.

The proposed candle production plant has a capacity of 100 molds and would take a estimated sum of N 725,000 to establish as stated below

Preliminary Investment N 75,000
Accommodation N 100,000
Plant & Machinery N 350, 000
Working Capital N 200,000

Total N 725,000

With a good business plan, the investor can approach any of the micro finance banks for financing.

The payback period is within 9 -12 months of operations.

WASTE PAPER TRADING AND RECYCLING IN NIGERIA.

Paper is one of the most important products ever invented by man. Widespread use of a written language would not have been possible without some cheap and practical material to write on.

The invention of paper means that more people would be educated because more books would be printed and distributed. Industry would grow because all the plans, blueprints, records and formulae it uses would be written down and saved, together with the printing press, paper provided an extremely important way to communicate knowledge.

The primary source of raw material for production of paper is vegetable fibers, obtained mainly from plants. To ensure that the forest is not depleted of these woods, there is need to provide alternative source of raw materials, this therefore leads to the invention of the process of recycling.

Recycling, which is the extraction and recovery of valuable materials from scrap or other discarded materials, is employed to supplement the production of paper. Basically, the materials are reused, or remanufactured into new products. Some products, such as paper, plastics, glass, can be recycled or reused over and over again. This week’s SDE newspaper can be recycled into another week’s news. Many new products are being made from recovered materials.

One of the easiest, and in fact one of the oldest ways of making extra money, is by collecting old newspapers and selling them to a recycling plant or by exporting it.

Believe it or not, you can develop a very respectable income collecting and selling paper to the recycling centers. It certainly does not take any education, specialized training or experience; it's as simple as saving your old newspapers and turning them in to a central collection depot.

Do you have plies of waste newspaper in your house or you know where to get it in large quantity? Smile because you are about to make money from it.

Entrepreneur that wants to trade on other types of waste paper apart from newspaper and magazine would find shomolu in bariga local government of Lagos state very useful because that is the hub of the printing business in Nigeria and at such so much waste is generated there.

Waste paper can either be sold locally or exported mostly to India, United Arab Emirates and China where they are recycled into jumbo reel used in the production of toilet rolls and other finished products.

That the buying and selling {or export} of waste paper is a profitable venture is not a doubt but before anybody can go into the business and really make money from it ,it is important that he/she understands the rudiments of the business especially if the entrepreneur wants to export the product.

In export and import, documentation is the most difficult aspect and same is usually surrounded around terms like payment, procedure and delivery terms.

Sourcing for waste paper especially newspaper and magazine can be achieved by placing advert on newspaper or by buying directly from publishing house. It is usually sold per KG and though the price varies from place to place, seller to seller.

The cost of buying this paper is very low because they are regarded as waste, so buying it means helping to keep the environment clean but it is not going to be easy starting because there is a cartel that controls the business. Because of these, beginers would not get the quantity they might wants especially if they want to buy large quantity but with time and better negotiating skills things would improve.

The capital required to start the business would depend on the financial strength of the entrepreneur and whether or not he/she wants to sell locally or export the product. The business can be started with as low as N20, 000 {or even lower} and as high as millions of naira. Return on investment could be between 10% - 15% depending on the negotiating skills of the entrepreneur.
