SESAME SEED EXPORT IN NIGERIA: THE OPPORTUNITIES.

During the 2004-2005 cropping season, Nigeria realized the sum of one hundred and fifty million {$150,000,000} dollars from the export of sesame seed. Sesame seed now ranks second only after cocoa in terms of value and volume of crop export. It is been estimated that about seven hundred and fifty million {$750,000,000} dollars would be realized from the export of the product in the next three {3} to four {4} years.

Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is a flowering plant in the genus Sesamum. Numerous wild relatives occur in Africa and a smaller number in India. It is widely naturalized in tropical regions around the world and is cultivated for its edible seeds, which grow in pods. They are also cultivated because of the edible oil extractable from the seeds.

Sesame seed is one of the oil bearing seeds produced in Nigeria and due to its odour, chemical composition, colour and taste; it is usually the preferred choice of edible oil.

Nigeria currently ranks second in the Africa and seventh in the world producing about 120,000 metric ton of the product annually. Sesame seed also known as beni-seed is produced in the following states of Nigeria Benue,Taraba, Cross – River, Yobe, Borno, Plateau, Bauchi ,Kebbi, Kano, Adamawa ,Gombe, Nigeria, Ebonyi, Katsina and Nassarawa with Nassarawa being the largest producer.

Two main varieties of sesame seed are produced in Nigeria namely the white and the black variety and both are widely accepted in the international market. The price is dependent on the quality. After harvesting, the seeds are cleaned and hulled. The seeds are sieved to remove any foreign material. After these, the seed passes through a combination of water and friction work in order to separate the hull from the seeds. These dust-free dehulled seeds are usually 99.97% pure.

The specification of the is
Purity: 99% min,
Moisture: 7% max,
Impurity: 1%,
Oil Content: 50% min
FFA: 2% max

Packaging is usually in 50 Kg though the buyer could request it to be packaged in 40/80/100 Kg and since the price is quoted in Metric tons, 1000/KG makes 1 ton. This helps in easy containerization of the goods since most shipping company prefer to carry 20 tons in 20 feet container. A twenty {20} feet container would contain eighteen {18} tons of the product.

The international price currently goes for about $1200 FOB, Apapa port, Lagos.

Some of the cost to consider in the export of sesame seed is cost of material and packaging, transportation, insurance, documentation, NESS fee etc.
