MANGANESE ORE TRADING AND EXPORT IN NIGERIA.

Developing the country’s solid mineral wealth promises to have a considerable impact on the economy since mineral deposits are geographically spread across more than 450 communities in the country.

The mineral spread in Nigeria is significant with evidence of 34 different minerals distributed in Nigeria’s richly endowed geology. Though not all the mineral occurrences will ultimately have enough reserves to be of viable interest to mining companies, Manganese ore is one mineral with enough economic deposit to attract both local and foreign investors in the mining ,processing and trading of the product.

Manganese is a silvery-gray metal resembling iron. It is hard and very brittle, difficult to fuse, but easy to oxidize. Manganese metal and its common ions are paramagnetic. The most important manganese ore is pyrolusite (MnO2).

They can be used in steelmaking, aluminum, an additive in gasoline, dry cell battery. Some of the states they can found in Nigeria include Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Kaduna, Plateau, Katsina, Kebbi and Nassarawa.

The first step towards a successful trading on manganese ore is to conduct a test on the sample on ore in order to know if it manganese ore or iron ore because of the similarity in the two minerals.

Packaging is usually in 50 Kg since the price is quoted in Metric tons. 1000/KG makes 1 ton and this helps in easy containerization of the goods since most shipping company prefer to carry 20 tons in 20 feet container. In shipping mineral ores, 20 feet container is usually preferred because of the weight of the ores.

It is advisable to weigh the goods at the point of purchase and preferably 51/52 KG should be used instead of 50 KG because after breaking of the material, some part would be lost to dust and debris.

The Quality /Quantity product is at the centre of the contract and because of the grade and scale of mining of manganese ore we have in Nigeria; it is advisable the exporter negotiates for a Mn percentage not greater than 50% with rejection at 35%. The quantity should not be more than 450/MT monthly.

Opportunities also exist for the processing of manganese ore in the country with foreign equipment manufacturers already having offices in Nigeria.
