SESAME SEED EXPORT IN NIGERIA; NON-OIL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY SERIES.

Non-oil exports through Nigerian ports have recorded a tremendous increase of 112.4 % increase in the nine years spanning 2001-2010 with an average annual growth of 10.34%.
One of product that is exported from Nigeria and in fact the second largest non-oil export from Nigeria is sesame seed.

Sesame seeds (or sesamum or benniseed) are the seeds of the tropical annual Sesamum indicum.
Based on their colour difference, sesame seed in Nigeria can be classified into two {2} types namely the white/raw and brown/mixed.

The white varieties is usually regarded as the food grade and used in the bakery industry while the brown varities are refered to as oil grade and used in the production of sesame oil.

The White (Food Grade) seed is grown around the towns of Keffi, Lafia/Makurdi, Doma, and in Nassarawa, Taraba, and Benue States. It is easier to sort and the Fumani/Denin people consume sesame locally.

FACTS ABOUT SESAME SEED

History: Sesame seed is believed to be one of the first condiments as well as one of the first crops to be used as edible oil. Most of wild species of genus Sesanum are native to Africa south of the Sahara {Wikipedia}

Estimated National Production: Nigeria currently produces about 300,000 MT of sesame seed annually

Export from Nigeria: Nigeria exports about 60-70% of her national production.

Types: Based on the colour,there are two types of sesame seed namely white and brown variety.
Uses: Basically used as cooking oil . On a broad, it is safe to classify the use into oil and non-oil use.

Areas of Production: In Nigeria, sesame seed is mostly produced in the Northern central and Northern states of the federation. Some of the states where they are produced includes Nassarawa, Benue, Taraba, Yobe,FCT, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kwara, Bauchi, Kaduna, Kebbi and Plateau States.

In international trade, the required specification of sesame seed is given below

Moisture Content: 6-8% Maximum
Oil Content: 49%
Admixture: 2% Maximum
Other Colours: Less that 2%

Sesame seed is an excellent source of high quality oils. The oil is very stable and free from undesirable nutrition or flavour components. The oil has a natural anti-oxidant which prevents aging and vital for production of liver cells.

It is also rich in protein. Its protein has disable amino acid profile and good nutritional similar to soy bean.

It is these sterling attributes that stimulates interest in the production and sales of sesame seed.

Apart from being used in oil production, sesame seed is used in the production of biscuits, bakery, medicinal treatment, margarine, aerosol, tahini, dips & spreads and animal feed.

The sesame seed oil market currently represents about 70% of the total market share. Nigeria presently produces about 300,000 MT of sesame seed annually of which between 60% -70% are exported.

The demand market for sesame seed can be classified into two broad groups namely that who import because of the high quality oil extractable from the seed and those who buy for non-oil use.

Oil based importers are mostly in Asia and includes countries like Japan and Korea. The national requirement for sesame seed in Japan is estimated at over 200,000 MT. With national requirement of over 60,000 MT the US market is mixture of oil and non-oil market.

Imports of sesame seed into the EU have grown over the 1990s and the market now imports in excess of 100,000 MT annually. The EU market is a most a non-oil market and the major consuming markets in the EU are Turkey, Greece, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.

In Greece, sesame is used mostly for preparing tahini, the paste of ground sesame seeds, which is used as an ingredient.

In northern Europe, sesame is more commonly used as a bakery product and is particularly popular in Germany and the Netherlands either within breads or on the surface of bread and breadsticks as a garnish.

The return on investment on the export of sesame seed ranges from 10% to 15%.
