TERRAZO FLOOR TILES { PRE-CAST } PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA, HOW VIABLE?
Although it has been around for centuries, one truly fashionable and innovative flooring system that has never lost its splendor is terrazzo floor tile. Terrazzo can be found in ancient Greece, as it was used in Italy using lime mortar and broken tiles. Although it reached its peak in Venice and became known as Venetian terrazzo, and has since spread through Europe and around the world, becoming a truly stunning and functional flooring system.
Ceramic vitreous floor tiles, granite and marble stone tiles, red clay flooring tiles are some of the substitute material used in place of terrazzo floor tiles.
In Nigeria, the demand for terrazzo floor tiles is estimated to be around 18 % of the total requirement of flooring tiles. Taking the above factor into consideration the demand is expected to increase at the rate of 5% every year during the current plan period. Hence there is a good scope for setting up of new units for the manufacture of terrazzo tiles.
Terrazzo is a composite material, poured in place or precast, which is used for floor and wall treatments. It consists of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other suitable chips, sprinkled or unsprinkled, and poured with a binder that is cementitious, chemical, or a combination of both. Terrazzo is cured and then ground and polished to a smooth surface or otherwise finished to produce a uniformly textured surface.
Though the most preferred shapes are rectangular and square, ‘hexagonal and octagonal shapes are also being produced. The finish may be glossy, semi -glossy, matt, luster and of many other types.
When color gravel is used and after the bricks is pressed with the making machine, we need to use polishing machine to make a smooth surface for the tile, and the tile surface will show different color stones, it's called Terrazzo floor tile.
However when use pigment is used and after the bricks is pressed with the making machine, it doesn't need polishing machine, the finished goods will be with Uniform color, and it can be made for red, yellow or blue color, it's called color floor tile.
Arguably one of the best investment vehicle in the world is real estate development owning to a number of factors which includes the fact that shelter {housing} is one of the basic need of man, fixed supply of land and the ever increasing value of properties with time.
Nigeria with her current population estimated at over 165 million people growing at a rate of 3.5% per annum has a short fall in the supply of housing units that has been estimated to be between 16 – 17 million.
With an economic growth rate of 5.7% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large, growing and sustainable market for terrazzo floor tiles.
Socio-economic changes in society, improved standards of living, renovation of old buildings and all-round development in the country, have increased building construction activity and the demand of terrazzo floor tiles.
