PROCESSING GUM ARABIC FOR HUGE PROFIT IN NIGERIA.

As the world continues to grapple climate change and its effect on the socio-economic life of ordinary people, Nigeria is presented with a great opportunity to exploit the twin benefit of fighting desert encroachment and increasing the earning power of her citizens through massive investment in the cultivation of gum Arabic.

Gum arabic is a leguminous tree species that is well adapted to sudan and sahelian agro-ecology of Africa and it produces a natural gum made of hardened sap mostly taken from three species of the acacia tree; Acacia senegal (Grade 1), Acacia seyal(Grade 2) and Combretum though the major Acacia utilized for commercial Gum Arabic production in Nigeria are Acacia Senegal and Acacia seyal.

Nigeria currently produces about 20,000 MT of gum Arabic annually ranking second in the world with Sudan as the leading producer and Chad after Nigeria as the third largest producer of the product whose world production as been estimated at 70,000 MT annually. From available data Africa produces about 98% of the world requirement of gum Arabic.

Gum Arabic is used as thickener, suspender, emulsifier, stabilizer, flavour carrier, binder and encapsulating material. In addition, it is used in confectionaries, food, beverages, pharmaceuticals and chemical industries.

Some of the producing states in Nigeria includes Adamawa,Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Gombe, Taraba, Plateau, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Nasarawa ,Niger and Zamfara. Though Borno and Yobe states are the major producers in Nigeria

Much as been said and written on the investment opportunity available in the trading of raw gum Arabic but the essence of this artic le is to stress the need for the processing of the product into refined Gum Arabic powder and the cultivation of the plant for the conservation of the environment. The processing technique is quite simple; it involves the sorting, crushing, dispersion in water, purification, precipitation and separation.

Most of the nations gum Arabic are harvested from trees mostly found in the wild and though it take an average of about five (5) before the tree would be matured for tapping , investment in large scale acacia tree plantation would not only provide the investor with an organized way of sourcing for the raw material for the processing plant but would also help to combat environmental degradation in the form of desert encroachment.

It is a generally believe that Nigeria is not fully taking advantage of the large land available for the cultivation of the product, having little from the producing trees and at such, our production of about 20,000 MT annually is low compared to our potential.Perhap the most neglected area is in the area of processing, most of the product are harvested and sold as a raw instead of adding value to the product before selling. The country earned US$88.08 million in 2004 through the export of the raw form of the product whereas the country stands to gain US$5.00 for every one kilogramme of processed Gum Arabic. At the moment much of Nigeria, gum requirement is sourced from abroad and probably from

The machinery and equipment required for production can be sourced locally or imported from abroad. Other requirement to consider apart from the cost of the machinery is the cost of accommodation, operating cost and project vehicle.

A number of incentives have been put together to encourage investment in agriculture. These include;

o Finance Credit
o Tax Holdings
o Reduced Customs Charges on Imported Inputs
o Technical Support through Research Institutions
o Export Financing and Guarantee
o Agricultural Insurance Scheme
o Extension Services

LOCAL MILK PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITIES.

Nigeria, with a population of over 140 million people is grossly underprovided with essential food components like protein which is important for the realization and development of human potentials both mentally and physically. Data from the FOS, CBN, and FAO indicates that from cattle, less than 2kg of beef is available to an average Nigerian per year and just mere 4kg of eggs per annum is available to each Nigerian. In fact, milk production has been nose diving or at best has remained constant since 1994.

This scenario is compounded more so because the volume of egg supply is very low, being 10.56g per person per day as compared with the usual recommendation that an egg should be consumed by an adult per day.

To ameliorate this problem of low-level of protein intake, there is the need for concerted effort, among the various stakeholders to bring about the massive production of protein based food items especially through massive investment in the livestock and it consequence increase local production of milk.

Until the late 1970’s when hydrocarbon was discovered in commercial quantity in Oloibiri ,present day Bayelsa state , Agriculture remained the mainstay of the economy contributing over 90% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country as against the less than 40% it now contributes with crop accounting for 80%,livestock 13%,forestry 3% and fisheries 4%. Despite the prominent role of the Petroleum sector, Agriculture still employs about 70% of the entire population both formal and informal.

Though Nigeria is the largest producer of cow milk in West Africa and the third in Africa, the country is a net importer of the product and in order to increase the percentage of the livestock sector and local milk production in Nigeria, massive investment is required in the dairy industry to meet up with the 1.45 billion litres estimated national milk requirement.

The Nigerian dairy industry represents an important component of the agribusiness sector of the economy with great economic, nutritional, and social implications. Dairy products provide the most important amino acid required for body building as well as tissues repairs in human beings. Animal protein equally supplies its own level of energy required for daily activities. It is also essential for the synthesis of certain hormones, enzymes and body products in both man and animals.

Nigerians have been observed to consume more of plant protein, which has been found to be of lower quality than animal protein. Small scale dairy milk processing plants can take up the challenges of improving the consumption of animal protein by the teeming population as well as supply those nutrients instead of going for the large scale dairy milk processing plant which require capital outlay. The use of exotic breed with high milk production and having resistance for tse-tse fly dominate in the rainforest region of Nigeria, we also boost production of the commodity.

Presently, the local production of milk is less than 1% of the total annual demand that has been estimated at 1.45 billion litres, making the total milk consumption in Nigeria less than 10 litres per head whereas the global average is about 40 litres per head. In other parts of Africa, it is 28 litres per head.

It has been estimated that about 500,000 cows and between 300,000 to 400,000 hectares of land is required to meet the national demand of the country.

The recent attempted ban on imported powdered milk in order to encourage local production in Nigeria ,should be seen as a wake-up call for savvy investors to take advantage for small scale milk production in the country and tap into the largely import dependant diary industry in Nigeria.

A number of incentives have been put together to encourage investment in agriculture. These include;

o Finance Credit
o Tax Holdings
o Reduced Customs Charges on Imported Inputs
o Technical Support through Research Institutions
o Export Financing and Guarantee
o Agricultural Insurance Scheme
o Extension Services

PROCESSING AND PACKAGING OF POTATO FOR PROFIT; THE OPPORTUNITIES.

Nigeria a country blessed with diverse climatic and soil condition for the production of different agricultural produce, is the leading producer of potato in Sub-Saharan Africa producing about 3,460,000 MT of sweet potatoes annually.

Potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial Solanum tuberosum of the Solanaceae family. The word potato may refer to the plant itself as well as the edible tuber.

Despite being first introduced outside the Andes region four centuries ago, today potatoes have become an integral part of much of the world's cuisine and are the world's fourth-largest food crop, following rice, wheat, and maize.

The main producing state in Nigeria is plateau state where about 90% of the nation’s production is domiciled and where an altitude ranging from 1200-1400 m above sea level and summer temperatures that rarely exceeds 35 degrees makes for a climate well suited for potato production.

Apart from Jos Plateau, potato can also be grown on the Obudu highlands in Cross River State, Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State and Biu Plateau in Borno State. During the cold harmattan months of November – February, potato can also be grown in about eleven Northern States, such as Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, Gombe, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kaduna and Kebbi under irrigation.

Though potato production can be established as a profitable enterprise, for every N1.00 invested in sweet potato production, a profit of N0.83 kobo realizable, the main thrust is this article is the processing of the product to produce frozen/fried potato chips.

Potato is not a major food commodity in Nigeria and studies seems to suggest that this might not be unconnected with work load involved in the processing of the product and at such a situation where the product can be processed in an hygienic and well packaged manner ready for the market would no doubt have ready and willing buyers considering the fact that it has taken away the work involved .The product would have high demand in hotels, homes, restaurants and fast food outlets.

Depending on the expected end product, below is the production process.

1. Potato (Raw Material) 1.15SG Fresh Potatoes, Weight is about from 150g to 250g, Sugar density less than 1%.

2. Fresh potatoes will keep longest when stored in a cool, dry, dark area with good ventilation. Ideally, storage areas should range between 5-10° C.

3. Send potatoes into production line. Control the feeding speed and the quality of potato.

4. Wash away the dust on the potatoes

5. Send cleaned potatoes into peeler by fix-quantity.

6. Peel the skin of the potato

7. Check the quality of peeled potato in the container by workers.

8. Adjust the sliced thickness of hand push machine Slice. The available thickness is from 1.2mm to 2.0mm

9. Wash potato chips by warm water. In order to prevent dark fried potato chip.

10. Draining the water in the potato chips in order to promote the frying quality.

11. Fry potato chips by manual.

12. Sprinkle seasoning flour evenly manually.

13. Depend on buyer's requirement of packing quality.

14. Sell to the market

Just like every food products in Nigeria, the product would have to be registered with National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) to guarantee the safety of the product for human consumption.

MEAT AND BONE MEAL PROCESSING AND PACKAGING; THE OPPORTUNITIES.

Any nation that wants to develop must look inwards to identify areas where it has comparative advantage over other nations and seek to develop the identified areas.

Apart from hydrocarbon of which Nigeria is the sixth largest exporter of crude oil and has the second largest known deposit of natural gas in the world, Nigeria also has comparative advantage in the Agricultural sector, where varieties of crops and animals are produced and reared respectively due to favorable climatic condition, good soil structure and the fact that over 70% of the entire land mass of the country is arable.

The equatorial maritime air mass along the coast influences the climate which is characterized by high humidity and heavy rainfall, while the tropical continental air mass in the North brings dry, dusty winds from the Sahara. The temperature varies considerably with the season, as does rainfall which is far less in the North. The main rains occur between April and October with average rainfall ranging from 2,497mm (100 inches) in the South to 869mm (32 inches) in the North.

Until the late 1970’s when hydrocarbon was discovered in commercial quantity in Oloibiri ,present day Bayelsa state , Agriculture remained the mainstay of the economy contributing over 90% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country as against the less than 40% it now contributes. Despite the prominent role of the Petroleum sector, Agriculture still employs about 70% of the entire population both formal and informal.

Though agricultural production in Nigeria has declined over the years factors like high unemployment rate, the crash of the stock market in Nigeria and the global economic recession is having a positive effect on the agricultural sector especially in the production of micro-livestock’s like poultry, snail, fish and goats. This renewed interest in agriculture has created a large and expanding market for animal feed in Nigeria that is estimated at over four million (4,000,000) MT annually.

Animal feed are required for the proper development of livestock and depending on the type of livestock and the stage of production of the livestock some of the raw materials required in animal feed production includes maize, whole wheat, oyster shells, bone meal, meat meal, blood meal, fish meal, Soya cake, groundnut cake, palm kernel cake and a host of others. Though the investor can make money supply the other products to the buyers around, the focus of this article would be on bone meal.

Bone meal is a mixture of crushed and coarsely ground bones that is used as an organic fertilizer for plants and in animal feed. As a slow-release fertilizer, bone meal is primarily used as a source of phosphorus.

As a fertilizer, the N-P-K ratio of bone meal is generally 4-12-0, though some steamed bone meals have N-P-Ks of 1-13-0. Bone meal is also an excellent organic source of calcium.

Organic fertilizers usually require the use of microbes/bacteria in the soil in order to make the nutrients in the fertilizer bio-available. That can result in irregular release of phosphorus/calcium. But in most cases, some meat can be deliberately left on the bone so that they can be processed for use in animal feed production and at such while bone meals are mostly used as fertilizers and meat and bone meals are most used in the preparation of animal feeds.

Meat and bone meal (MBM) is a product of the rendering industry. It is typically about 50% protein, 35% ash, 8-12% fat, and 4-7% moisture. It is primarily used in the formulation of animal feed to improve the amino acid profile of the feed.

Meat and bone meal has around two thirds the energy values of fossil fuels such as coal; the UK particular widely uses meat and bone meal for the generation of renewable electricity.
Nigeria, with a population of about 140 million is grossly underprovided with an essential food component, protein. For example, data from the FOS, CBN, and FAO indicate that from cattle, less than 2kg of beef is available to an average Nigerian per year and just mere 4kg of eggs per annum is available to each Nigerian. In fact, milk production has been nose diving or at best has remained constant since 1994.

This scenario is compounded more so when the volume of egg supply is very low, being 10.56g per person per day as compared with the usual recommendation that an egg should be consumed by an adult per day. This recommendation would imply a crate of 30 eggs per month. This story also holds for other meat products including, chicken.

To ameliorate this problem of low-level of protein intake, massive investment would be required in animal feed production which consumes about 70% of the cost of producing proteins of animal sources.

The market for animal feeds is large, expanding and sustainable hence driving the need for bone and meat meals and the materials can be sourced from abattoirs across Nigeria, processed and packaged and sold to willing, ready and able buyers. Both local and international buyers are interested in sourcing for quality bone and meat meals.

The investor can choose to with supplying the bone milling companies or start there own bone milling company and supply directly to the feed millers. Depending on the scale the wants to engage in, the business can be started with between N 50,000 – N 500,000.

Despite the prominent role of the Petroleum sector, Agriculture still employs about 70% of the entire population both formal and informal.

The investment climate in the sector before the advent of the present civilian dispension was considered unattractive, low in profitability and no serious incentives for investors.

It was against this background that the government put in place the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (NEEDS), supported at the State level by the State Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (SEEDS). It has initiatives in the following areas; cassava, rice, vegetable oil, sugar, livestock and fisheries, tree crops and cereals.

The NEEDS was expected to meet the following targets:

 Minimum growth rate of 6% in Agriculture.
 Raise agriculture exports of 3 billion dollars by the end of 2007, with cassava being a major component.
 Reduce food imports from 14.5% of total imports to 5% by 2007.
 Protect all prime agriculture lands for continued agricultural production.

Under this strategy and the National Agricultural Policy and the National Policy on Integrated Rural Development, the sector been able to sustain the growth of 7% attained in 2003/04.
However due to a combination of factors like unemployment, effects of global economic crisis and the crash witnessed in the stock ,property and financial sector in 2008/09 in the Nigerian economy, investors are now switching there investment radar to the various investment opportunity that abounds in the Agricultural sector.

Various investment opportunities abound for small, medium and large scale enterprise in sustainable agriculture and industrial farming. These investment opportunities would be analyzed under the following headings

• Arable Farming ( Crop Production)

Over 70% of the entire land mass (98,300,000 hectares) of the country is arable. Some of the crops that are produced in Nigeria include maize, sorghum, millet, cassava,
yam, wheat, sugarcane, cocoyam, potatoes, cotton, pineapple, plantain, bananas, beniseed, castor oil etc. Prospective investors interested in the production of bio-fuel can take advantage of the three million (3,000,000) hectares of land made available for the production of Jatropha by the federal government.

• Industrial Processing of Agricultural Products

Agricultural products require processing in order to be suitable for human and industrial use and opportunities abound in the sector for savvy investors to take advantage of. Some of the areas where such investment is required includes palm kernel cracking plant, groundnut processing plant, fish feed production etc.

• Agro – Commodity Export

According to statistic from the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), the non-oil export segment as been growing in the past five (5) years and arguable as been one of the drive force in the renewed interest in agriculture in the country. TOILET ROLLS PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA;THE OPPORTUNITIES.

In 2004, the federal government of Nigeria banned the importation of finished toilet roll, serviette and face tissue in order to encourage local production of the product and create the much needed employment.
Though much as been achieved in terms of local production, the market is still experiencing a deficit in supply.

The nations annual toilet roll requirement as been estimated at 905 million units out of which local production can only meet about 800 million units. The short fall in supply translate to a market gap estimated at about three hundred and seventy five million (N 375,000,000) annually in revenue and an investment opportunity for savvy investors to exploit.

Opportunities also exist for the recycling of waste paper into jumbo reels used as raw material for the production of toilet rolls.

The demand for toilet roll would continue to expand as the standard of living of the over one hundred and forty million (140,000,000) population growing at the rate of 5. 7% per annum continues to grow.

Toilet paper is a soft paper product (tissue paper) used to maintain personal hygiene after human defecation or urination. However, it can also be used for other purposes such as absorbing spillages or craft projects. It differs in composition somewhat from facial tissue, and is designed to decompose in septic tanks, whereas some other bathroom and facial tissues do not.

The toilet roll production plant is a stationary one to be sourced locally. The plant is made up of the core cutting machine, core gluing machine, jumbo reel winding machine and band saw cutting machine.

The plant would be sourced from an experienced fabricator of plants in Nigeria, hence, the durability of the plant and spare parts would not be a problem.

The production of toilet rolls involves the following processes. First, the core paper is fed into the core making machine from two different rolls and glue applied. The core pipe length is determined and cut. Jumbo reels are then fed into the jumbo reel making machine with the core pipe from the core making machine.

The jumbo reel sheets are wound or wrapped round the reel to be made. The jumbo reel sheets are wound or wrapped round the core pipe automatically by the reel to be made.

This is now sent to the band cutting machine where the toilet rolls paper is cut into the desired market size. The cut toilet rolls are then manually wrapped and packaged in cellophane wraps, stapled and sent to the store, ready for sale.
