The ever increasing deficit in housing supply in Nigeria which is estimated at over sixteen million {16,000,000} units and the need for the construction of other important infrastructure if the country is to meet up with the vision 20:2020 project of becoming amongst the top 20 economies in the world by 2020 continues to drive the need to granite, an essential construction raw material.

In 2008, It was estimated that the granite chipping demand in southwestern Nigeria was about 24.2 million tons while the total production was about 18 million tons leaving a supply gap of 6.2 million tons. This translates to an annual market size of over N48 billion.

The supply gap has been identified to continue to expand as construction activities in the region continue to grow at a faster rate than the increase in production of granites. According to The Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO) Nigeria’s housing deficit to date is 17 million housing units on a total population of 140 million with virtually no organized mortgage market.

In addition, infrastructural development particularly with the Federal Government commitment is expected to further expand demand for granite aggregates which are a major input in the construction industry.

It should be noted that the different sizes of granite aggregates can be used for different purposes. They are used to achieve strength and durability in the construction industry. 3 ¼, 1/2 and 7/8 are usually used in the construction of residential accommodation .

To achieve strength especially in high rise building ,dust and rice are usually mixed with cement to produce strong concrete slabs. They are also used in the production of poles used in the power industry.

In the construction of roads, dust, rice and ½ are mixed together in the right proportion to get the desired strength and durability.

The 3 ¼ and ½ inch sizes is the most sorted sizes because of the several uses of these sizes.

Lagos, the largest market for granite chips in the country, is not an igneous environment where granite could be found, all the real estate developers, contractors and Civil Engineering and Construction companies gets their granite need from nearby towns.

Granite are usually priced per ton and one ton equals 1,000 KG. Prospective clients could be charged based ex-site delivery{that is the clients would take care of transportation of the product} or quoted inclusive of transpotation to the site of the prospective client.

The average ex-factory price of granite in Nigeria is around N 2,200/ ton.

Moringa oleifera is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Moringa, which is the only genus in the family Moringaceae.Moringa oleifera is a fast growing, evergreen, deciduous tree. It can reach a height of 10–12 m and the trunk can reach a diameter of 45 cm.

The moringa tree is grown mainly in semiarid, tropical, and subtropical areas. It grows best in dry sandy soil and tolerates poor soil, including coastal areas.

Moringa is a plant that is native to the sub-Himalayan areas of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. It is also grown in the tropics. The leaves, bark, flowers, fruit, seeds, and root are used to make medicine.

Moringa is an important food source in some parts of the world. Because it can be grown cheaply and easily, and the leaves retain lots of vitamins and minerals when dried, moringa is used in India and Africa in feeding programs to fight malnutrition. The immature green pods are prepared similarly to green beans, while the seeds are removed from more mature pods and cooked like peas or roasted like nuts

Moringa seeds are large and circular-shaped, and grow inside the pods of the Moringa Oleifera tree. The pods can reach over a foot in length and contain over a dozen seeds. These seeds have their own wings so the wind can carry them to fertile ground far away from the parent plant.

Fresh Moringa seeds are usually soft, and as they dry out, they harden until they resemble a dried bean or pea.Moringa oil is extracted from seed part of Moringa oleifera tree. The seeds which are harvested from pods yield around 35–40% of non-drying Moringa oil which is also called Ben oil or Behen oil. The oil is extracted using Cold Pressing method with the oil extracted being clear and odorless.

The oil is extensively used in health and beauty applications as well as in the production of expensive and natural perfumes and fragrances. With an impressive oleic acid content of 72%, Moringa oil penetrates deeply into the skin, delivering vital nutrients and also helping the skin and hair retain moisture. Moringa oil’s benefits include skin care and rejuvenation, stronger and healthier hair, wrinkle reduction and skin blemish removal.

The seed cake remaining after oil extraction is used as a fertilizer and also to purify well water and to remove salt from seawater.

Frozen food business refers to the preservation of livestock foof such as beef, fish, turkey etc in a refrigerator in other to keep it fresh for consumption on a later date.

It is very important to sort out where your source of supply will come from before you begin the business. Most dealer get their supplies for cold room situated around their area of business. The investor would also need generator, deep freezers, scales, cutlass, knifes, cutting table,Waste bin, apron, bucket, cutting plank, seat and sign board.

Frozen food can be divided into tow namle fish and poultry

Fish: Croaker,Titus, Kote, Shawa, Agodo, Tilapia, Argentina etc
Poultry: Full turket lap, Chest, wing, Gizzard etc

The market for frozen food is national. The consumption of Frozen Chicken, Turkey and Fish in Nigeria is very high, especial in urban centers like Lagos, Kano, Portharcourt and Abuja etc

With a population of over 165 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for frozen food.

The market for frozen food in Nigeria increased at a compound annual rate of 4.2% between 2003 and 2008. Demand is usually high during festive period.

The price per carton for fish depends on the type. For a carton of N11,000 while the Titus variety goes for N6,800. Kote is 30kg while Titus is 20kg. A carton of turkey goes for N6,100 and sells for N6,500. A carton of chicken now goes for N4,500 and sells for N5,000 – N5,100.

In areas where there is demand for the product, the dealer can sell as much as 18 cartons of fish, 12 cartons of turkey and 12 cartons of chicken weekly.

FISH FEED PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA, THE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Nigeria, with a population of about 165,000,000 people is grossly underprovided with an essential food component, which is protein. For example, data from the FOS, CBN, and FAO indicate that from cattle, less than 2kg of beef is available to an average Nigerian per year and just mere 4kg of eggs per annum is available to each Nigerian.

In fact, milk production has been nose diving or at best has remained constant since 1994.This scenario is compounded more so when  the volume of  egg supply is very low, being  10.56g per person per day as compared with the usual recommendation that an egg should be consumed by an adult per day. This recommendation would imply a crate of 30 eggs per month. This story also holds for other fish products.

To ameliorate this problem of low-level of protein intake, there is the need for concerted effort, among the various stakeholders to bring about the massive production of protein based food items at competitive costs so that they would be affordable to the general masses. Aside from the other necessary economic reforms, massive investment fish farming is one way of resolving the problem and invariably in the importation and production of livestock feeds.

The aquaculture industry is not new to Nigeria; the first documented fish farms date back fifty years. However, this was also the time when fishing activities among coastal communities also began to decrease due to oil-related activities.

Fishes are aquatic creatures that lives in water and there are over ten thousand {10,000} species of fishes in the waters. Only a few of the many kind of fishes are being cultured in Nigeria. In Nigeria, there are two fish types that thrive. These are the tilapia and the Clarias, which is a class of the catfish family.

Making locally-produced fish more readily available for Nigerian consumers will give them faster and fresher access to one of the healthiest sources of animal protein. The growing fish farming in Nigeria is creating a demand for fish feed. Apart from the presence of oxygen in the ponds, feed is next in importance for the production of fish.

Nutrient requirements and feeding characteristics of channel catfish have been extensively researched. This research has provided the basis for the formulation of efficient, economical diets and for the development of feeding strategies - both of which have been instrumental in the success of the catfish industry.

Feed for fish mostly consists of grain.  Catfish feeds contain grain or grain by-products that are rich in starch. In addition to providing an inexpensive energy source, starch helps bind feed ingredients together and increases expansion of extruded feeds so that the feed pellets are water stable and float in the water. A typical catfish feed contains 25 percent or more of digestible carbohydrates.

Fish feed is processed by compression, pelleting or extrusion. Existing pelletizers in Nigeria are not adequate for production of highly demanded fish feeds like floating types that can be done through extrusion.

This is because they sink rapidly when thrown in pond or tank, any raw starch in the diet is left uncooked, pollutes the water in the pond and tendency to crumble, produce much dust and gets wasted due to inability to detect when the fishes are satisfied with feeding.

Food extrusion is a process in which food ingredients are forced to flow, under one or several conditions of mixing, heating and shear, through a die that forms and/or puff-dries the ingredients. Extruded floating feeds are preferred by many farmers because they allow observation of the feeding process thereby preventing wasteful feeding, facilitates the inactivation and destruction of heat labile anti-nutritional factors and other contaminants and they are extremely stable in water.

Also, the higher temperatures employed during extrusion cooking facilitate the rupture of the cellulose membrane surrounding the plant cell and individual starch granules of cereals and oilseeds, with consequent starch gelatinization and increased carbohydrate and calorific bioavailability.

An extruder can influence the texture of the pellet varying in hardness, brittleness and cohesiveness. Density can also be influenced, resulting in sinking and floating properties adjusted to the fish eating behavior.

Extruded feeds are more cost efficient, improve quality of ratio and increase profitability for importers, compounder and farmer.

In Nigeria, the fish feed industry is dominated by few large commercial feed industries usually based in Europe, Asia or America who run local franchised industries.Currently in Nigeria emphasis has been placed on encouraging indigenous feed enterprises that make use of local ingredient in formulating feeds for the fish industry. The task of meeting the increasing demand for fish feed can best be realized through increased availability of indigenous feed production.

Indigenous Feed Enterprises are seen as an honest approach because of ease of availability of raw materials, and access by fish farmers. A number of strategies have been adopted such as price policies, input subsidies, production credit and liberalization by governments and individuals to increase the output of these fish feed enterprises, yet their performance is low in terms of meeting the needs of the fish industry. Interestingly, the request for the products of the enterprises is daily on the increase.

In view of the above, fish feed production in Nigeria is a viable business.

ESTABLISHING A CEMENT PRODUCTION PLANT IN NIGERIA, THE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Cement is a binder, a substance that sets and hardens as the cement dries and also reacts with carbon dioxide in the air dependently, and can bind other materials together.Cement is the best known binding material. Over the period of time, different varieties of Cement have been prepared to accommodate all needs. Portland Cement is the most commonly used Cement and all other variants are derived from Portland Cement.

Portland cement is produced by burning a homogenized mixture of clay and limestone, resulting in intermediate product called clinker. This inturn is mixed with gypsum in a specified proportion, and ground into fine powder to form the final product called Portland cement. This product is very useful in construction and engineering works of housing, buildings, bridges and cement concrete roads.

Following are the types of Portland Cement Ordinary Portland Cement {Type I},Modified Portland Cement, Rapid Hardening or High Early Strength Portland Cement (Type III), Quick Setting Cement, Low Heat Portland Cement (Type IV), Sulphate Resistant Portland Cement (Type V), Water Repellent Portland Cement, Water Proof Portland Cement, High Alumina Cement,Portland Slag Cement, Air Entraining Portland Cement (Type I-A, II-A, III-A), Pozzolana Portland Cement, Supersulphated Cement, Masonry Cement and Expansive Cement.

The major raw materials required for the production of cement are limestone, clay, sandstone, gypsum and pumice. These raw materials are proportionally mixed at different stages of the production process inorder to produce an intermediate product called clinker and final product of cement.

The technology of cement production involves several unit operations, and are complex to enumerate. However, the major unit operations are the following:-

- Preparation of raw mix

 Quarrying, crushing and transportation
 Proportioning of the ingredients
 Grinding of raw mix
- Calcinations and storage
 Homogenizing of raw mix
 Burning of raw mix in vertical shaft kiln and storing of clinker
- Production of cement
 Grinding of clinker and gypsum (96/4%)
 Packing of cement

Cement plants are usually located closely either to hot spots in the market or to areas with sufficient quantities of raw materials. The aim is to keep transportation costs low. Basic constituents for cement (limestone and clay) are taken from quarries in these areas.

Basically, cement is produced in two steps: first, clinker is produced from raw materials. In the second step cement is produced from cement clinker. The first step can be a dry, wet, semi-dry or semi-wet process according to the state of the raw material.

The raw materials are delivered in bulk, crushed and homogenised into a mixture which is fed into a rotary kiln. This is an enormous rotating pipe of 60 to 90 m long and up to 6 m in diameter. This huge kiln is heated by a 2000°C flame inside of it. The kiln is slightly inclined to allow for the materials to slowly reach the other end, where it is quickly cooled to 100-200°C.

Four basic oxides in the correct proportions make cement clinker: calcium oxide (65%), silicon oxide (20%), alumina oxide (10%) and iron oxide (5%). These elements mixed homogeneously (called “raw meal” or slurry) will combine when heated by the flame at a temperature of approximately 1450°C. New compounds are formed: silicates, aluminates and ferrites of calcium. Hydraulic hardening of cement is due to the hydration of these compounds.

The final product of this phase is called “clinker”. These solid grains are then stored in huge silos. End of phase one.

The second phase is handled in a cement grinding mill, which may be located in a different place to the clinker plant. Gypsum (calcium sulphates) and possibly additional cementitious (such as blastfurnace slag, coal fly ash, natural pozzolanas, etc.) or inert materials (limestone) are added to the clinker. All constituents are ground leading to a fine and homogenous powder. End of phase two. The cement is then stored in silos before being dispatched either in bulk or bagged.

Cement produced in Nigeria should comply with NIS 444.1:2003. Strength class should be 42,5N or higher because the concrete must develop strength as rapidly as possible. The quality of cement is regulated by the Standards Organization of Nigeria {SON}.

Nigeria cement production capacity is between an estimated 26 million tons and 28 million tons per annum and the industry has witnessed 95.6 per cent growth in the span of 8 years, beginning 2005 to 2012.

It is widely agreed that one of the most basic needs of man is shelter and in time past man has experienced with different material in order to meet with his housing needs. In modern day history, the use of cement along with sand and gravel as come to be accepted as one of the best construction raw material because they provide durability, firmness and can withstand harsh weather conditions though other materials like steel and glass are also used.

The ever increasing deficit in housing supply in Nigeria which is estimated at over sixteen million {16,000,000} units and the need for the construction of other important infrastructure if the country is to meet up with the vision 20:2020 project of becoming amongst the top 20 economies in the world by 2020 continues to drive the need to cement, an essential construction raw material.

FISH FEED IMPORTATION IN NIGERIA, THE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Nigeria is said to be the highest importer of frozen fish in the world. However, Nigeria’s ecological and climatic conditions put the country at an advantage for the production of a wide range of fishes in order to attain food security.

Availability of high quality fish feed is one of the greatest problems that affects the expansion of the small scale fish industries in Nigeria.Fish feed business is a billion-dollar industry, according to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). Feeds are so important in raising fish that some breeders even have their own feed manufacturing operation on-site.

Extruded floating feeds are preferred by many farmers because they allow observation of the feeding process thereby preventing wasteful

feeding, facilitates the inactivation and destruction of heat labile anti-nutritional factors and other contaminants and they are extremely stable in water.

Density can also be influenced, resulting in sinking and floating properties adjusted to the fish eating behaviour.

Extruded feeds are more cost efficient, improve quality of ratio and increase profitability for importers, compounder and farmer.

Nigeria’s fish sector grew rapidly over the past three years after more than a decade of decline. The growth in Nigeria’s fish sector is constrained by the persistent scarcity and high cost of major feed inputs such as corn and soybean meal. A major problem of the

local poultry industry is the irregular and limited supply of all raw materials that are grown in Nigeria. Prior to 2000, white maize and other Nigerian grown cereals were the main components of the ration, however with the reduced production of white maize coupled with increased consumption for humans, a grain shortage developed.

The GON lifted the import ban on corn in 2000 but imposed a duty of 70 percent to discourage imports. Corn prices over the past three years have averaged close to $300/MT.

Nigeria’s feed production is expanding rapidly in step with growth in the fish industry. Imported fish feed accounts for approximately 75 percent of the total feed produced in Nigeria and about 70 percent of the cost of producing proteins of animal sources can be attributed to animal feeds.

Nigeria imports between 700,000 and 900,000 metric tons of fish annually with the effort of the government to encourage local production of fish, investment in fish feed importation would contribute greatly to the development of animal protein supply in the country.

CASSAVA CHIPS PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA, THE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY.

Cassava is the most important root crop in Nigeria. Apart from being a staple crop in both rural and urban household’s cassava is a major source of income to cassava farmers and processors in the rural areas.

Cassava alone contributes about 45% of agricultural GDP in Nigeria for food or domestic purposes but its industrial processing and utilization has been very limited.
Currently, the country produces about 40,000,000 tons of the cassava tubers annually and in order to arrest the problem of post harvest loss, it is important to process cassava tubers to cassava chips/ pellets.

Cassava chips are unfermented white dried products of cassava with an average diameter of 3mm – 5mm obtained from freshly harvested Cassava roots. They are often used as a carbohydrate base in the animal feed industry particularly in Europe, or milled into flour for other uses such as in the production of ethanol, cakes, dough-nut and biscuits.

To produce cassava chips, the following equipments are required Industrial weighing scale, Chipping machine and Cabinet dryer.

The demand for Cassava Chips as an industrial product is wide. It cuts across so many industries such as distilleries, pharmaceutical, food and most especially the animal feed industry. The estimated demand for Cassava Chips in Nigeria was found to be in excess of 1,500,000T/annum. There is a high export demand in China especially for ethanol production.

The EU Animal Feeds Industry is the biggest consumer and importer of the product because of their large animal husbandry industry. They imported about 6.9million tones of Cassava products in 2000.

Nigeria produces a wide range of agricultural commodities, which could serve as raw materials for industrial production and food crop for human consumption. This dual nature of these crops makes them to be in high demand and one of such crop is Maize.

Maize (Zea Mays) is a cereal crop that grows across a range of agro-ecological zones in Nigeria, though it is grown slightly more in the Northern part of the country. Two types of maize are grown in Nigeria, the yellow and white variety and due to its rate of adaptability, Maize is not a seasonal product and some of the major producing states in Nigeria includes Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Gombe, Taraba, Plateau, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina,  Nasarawa ,Niger and Zamfara.

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa (about 165 million) is essentially agrarian in nature with over 80 per cent of her food needs being produced by peasant farmers cultivating, in many cases, less than 2 hectares of land.

Maize is the most important cereal crop in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and an important staple food for more than 1.2 billion people in SSA and Latin America. All parts of the crop can be used for food and non-food products. In industrialized countries, maize is largely used as livestock feed and as a raw material for industrial products.

It is on record that more than 60% of Nigeria's production of maize is consumed by the industrial sector for production of flour, beer, malt drink, corn flakes, starch, syrup, dextrose and animal feeds. There is high demand for corn {maize} starch in Nigeria. With a population of over 165 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for corn {maize}  starch.

Industries in need of cassava starch include textile, pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, paper and packaging, manufacturing and chemicals.

The national demand for corn {maize} starch in Nigeria is estimated at about 800,000 tons/ annum while the current national supply is estimated at 350,000 ton per annum.

Factors to consider before cultivating maize in Nigeria includes land, choice of variety, time of planting, seed rate, seed dressing, spacing and other agricultural practice.

Maize matures within 2-5 months of planting the crop and with the use of Hybrid Maize and mechanized system of farming, yield of maize can reach up to 10 tonnes per hectare.

From the above, it is clear that a large and sustainable exist for maize cultivation and production in Nigeria for both local and export market.
