The
mining of minerals in Nigeria accounts for only 0.3% of its GDP, due to
the influence of its vast oil resources. The domestic mining industry
is underdeveloped, leading to Nigeria having to import minerals that it
could produce domestically, such as salt or iron ore. Rights to
ownership of mineral resources is held by the Nigerian government, which
grants titles to organizations to explore, mine, and sell mineral
resources.
About 34 minerals deposits have been identified in Nigeria and one of such is Columbite.
There
is no available data on the volume of columbite deposit in Nigeria.
They are known to occure in the following states Plateau, Kano, Kaduna,
Bauchi, Kogi, Kwaara and Nasarawa States. Because of the numerous uses
of Columbite, there is steady and increasing demand for the product.
Columbite,
also called niobite, niobite-tantalite and columbate [(Fe, Mn)Nb2O6],
is a black mineral group that is an ore of niobium. It has a submetallic
luster and a high density and is a niobate of iron and manganese.
Columbite
has the same composition and crystal symmetry (orthorombic) as
tantalite. In fact, the two are often grouped together as a
semi-singular mineral series called columbite-tantalite or coltan in
many mineral guides. However, tantalite has a much greater specific
gravity than columbite, more than 8.0 compared to columbite's 5.2.
Columbite
is also very similar to tapiolite. Those minerals have same chemical
composition but different crystal symmetry: orthorhombic for columbite
and tetragonal for tapiolite. The largest documented single crystal of
columbite consisted of plates 6 millimetres (0.24 in) thick measuring 76
by 61 centimetres (30 × 24 in).
Source
of columbite ore used as an alloy of steel to form weldable high speed
steel for radio transmitting valves, heat sensitive detective devices
called barometer, for jet engines and other aircraft components.
The business involves the sourcing of Columbite, milling and packaging same for export.
The
commodity would be packaged in rakes of 50/80/100 KG depending on buyer
requirement. Delivery would be FOB, Free on Board. The investor would
load the goods on board the ship nominated by the buyer and clear the
goods for export.
Coltan or Columbite Tantalite is used primarily for the production of tantalum capacitors, used in many electronic devices.
It
is also used in high temperature alloys for air and land based
turbines. The upsurge in electronic products over the past decade
resulted in a peak in late 2000 with inflated high demand and price
increases for the mineral which lasted a few months. In 2005 the price
was still down at early 2000 levels.
Columbite
and Tantalite are ores used to produce the elements niobium and
tantalum. Columbite and tantalite are collectively known as coltan in
Africa. Tantalum is a valuable rare element used in electronics
manufacturing. In Nigeria, pegmatite deposits of coltan are frequently
also the source of several precious and semi-precious stones such as
beryl, aquamarine, and tourmaline. These pegmatites are found in
Nassarawa State near the Jos Plateau, as well as in several areas in
southeast Nigeria.
The
electronics industry is by far the largest consumer of tantalum (up to
60%) followed by the telecommunications industry which accounts for
approximately 18% of demand units.
