CASSAVA TUBERS CULTIVATION AND FARMING IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITY.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is extensively cultivated as an annual crop in tropical and subtropical regions for its edible starchy tuberous root, a major source of carbohydrates.

Apart from being a staple crop in both rural and urban house-holds in Nigeria, cassava is a major source of income to cassava farmers and processors in the rural areas.

Nigeria is currently the world leading producer of cassava, producing about forty million {40,000,000} MT per annum and cassava alone contributes about 5 % of agricultural GDP in Nigeria for food or domestic purposes but its industrial processing and utilization has been very limited.

Cassava is grown in virtually all the thirty –six states in Nigeria and the country has been rated as the highest producer of the commodity in the world.

Inputs required for Cassava cultivation are land, improved stem, pesticides, herbicides etc. As part of efforts to encourage agricultural production in Nigeria, land can be leased for between N 5,000 - N 7,000 per hectare. The land would be have to prepared for cassava cultivation and when properly managed along with the use of improved stem the, the farm land can yield between 20-25 tons per hectare and even more.

The price for cassava tuber is based on their cassava starch and they range between N 20,000- N 25,000 per ton.

The market for cassava bye - products is national. With a population of over one hundred and fifty {165,000,000} million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for cassava bye-products..

The estimated national demand for the various cassava bye-products and their current supply level is given below

Product                     National Demand               National Supply
Cassava Flour                 700,000 MT                    500,000 MT
Cassava Starch                 350,000                    Less than 25% of national demand
Garri                             1,000,000 MT                   250,000 MT

From the above figures, it is clear that there is a large and sustainable market for cassava bye – product hence cassava tubers in Nigeria.
