NIGERIA FOREST RESERVE; THE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES.

Why is Nigeria so blessed with abundant crude oil yet little has been achieved in terms of socio-economic development since the drilling of the first commercial well in Oloibiri present day Bayelsa state in the late 1970’s, has been the subject of various discussion for a long time now.

Some argue that oil has been a curse rather than a blessing and that before the exploration and production of oil in Nigeria, the nation’s agricultural sector contributed over 90% of the Gross Domestic Product {GDP} of the countries economy and employed as high as over 70% of the population directly or indirectly compared with the less than 40% it now contributes the Gross Domestic Product {GDP}.

My argument has always been that we are where we are because of our attitude and perception; both our leaders and followers are guilty of these. We tend to think mostly of me, me and me wanting everything to be done now, now, now and paying little attention to the good of all and developing idea that would outlive us. Until we change this perception, as a nation we would remain where we are, socio-economically.

That Nigeria has a comparative advantage in the Agricultural sector is not in doubt but harnessing and developing these potentials has been the challenge. Of the less than 40% Agriculture contributes to the Gross Domestic Product {GDP} of the economy, forestry accounts for 3% only whereas out of the total landmass 92.4 million hectares of the country, 31.3 million hectares is covered by forest having over 490 tress whereas only about 100 are utilized.

The equatorial maritime air mass along the coast influences the climate which is characterized by high humidity and heavy rainfall, creating the rainforest zone of Nigeria and cutting across mainly the southern part of the country.

Nigeria stands to gain a lot from the cultivation, development and organized exploitation of her forest reserves especially in these days of global warming. Forest provides wood, foods, tourism and other industrial raw materials.

Some of the investment opportunities available in the forest industry include

 Production of pulpwood and paper.
 Establishment of sawmills
 Ecotourism Development:
 Wood Processing and Allied Industries
 Establishment of Carpentry/Furniture workshops
 Mulberry Plantation/Sericulture
 Snail Production
 Honey Production
 Mushroom Production

Government in different states of the federations seek to encourage the private sector in the establishment of forest reserves and due to the peculiar nature {long term outlook} of forest business various incentives have been put forward in order to encourage investment in the sector and some of the incentives are stated below.

 Review of forestry law to accommodate low tariffs for private plantation owners.
 Provision of land in designated rural areas for forest plantation establishment.
 Improved rural road network.
 Open door policy through close and healthy relationship between the state government and the Organized Private Sector.
 Distribution/Sales of timber seedlings to private investors at highly subsidized rates.
 Tax concession/low tariff on logging activities on private plantations.
 Concessionary interest rates on Forestry loans.
 Low/zero tariffs on agricultural/forestry equipment.
 Wide- spread extension services on forest plantation establishment.

Logging is Nigeria is controlled by the various state governments in order to check deforestation and help plan a good afforestation programme. Round logs and rough sawn wood remains banned and completely prohibited for export.

ENTER INTO THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA BY SUPPLYING BARYTE ORE.

The recent enactment of the Nigeria oil and gas industry content development act has certainly opened up a lot of investment opportunity for local investors {Nigerians} in the oil and gas industry in the country . The “ACT” specifically imposes an obligation for the maintainance of a required Nigerian content level on all subsequent contracts and agreements carried out by companies trading in the Nigeria oil and gas industry.

Under the “ACT”,services like general banking, life insurance, pension fund, securities brokerage and fund management services are required to have 100% Nigerian content. This requirement also extends to the supply of drilling chemicals like barite ore , an important industrial mineral that is used as a weighing agent in drilling mud by oil producing companies in the oil and gas industry.

Nigeria has an estimated reserve of two million {2,000,000} MT of barite ore scattred in different parts of the country to include Plateau,Nassarawa ,Benue and Cross River states.

The Federal government in order to encourage the exploitation of the mineral locally placed a restriction on the important of the product into the country. A company can only import that product after showing clean evidence of insufficient local supply.

The market for the product is established since there is constant need for the product by the oil multinationals and there agents. The “ACT” and the restriction on the importation of the product would help to deepen the market for the product.

Barite ore is processed like other industrial mineral from collection to particle reduction and then packaging . The investor can choose to supply the product in the lump form to processing companies around that would process and re-sell to the oil companies or the investor can choose to have his/her mine and processing plant or just buy and re-sell to the processing plant.

One important fact in barite ore trading is the issue of quality. The quality of barite ore is measured based on the specific gravity {S.G} and specific gravity of 4.2 and above is generally preferred.

To tap in this great investment opportunity in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria, one would have to be registered with the department of petroleum resource {DPR} and the oil company one wants to deal with.

Just like the Nigeria oil and gas industry content development act has opened up different investment opportunities for Nigerians to tap into, barite supply has different strata’s the investor can operate from such as

1. Miner
2. Processor
3. Supplier

In order to encourage Nigerian service provider in the oil and gas industry, the “ACT” also created the Nigeria Content Development Fund to be financed by one percent of every contract awarded in the nations oil and gas industry so that Nigerian investors can access the fund for financing the projects.

INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN TRUCK TERMINAL OPERATIONS IN THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA.

A combination of factors like vandalization of oil distribution pipeline and the inability of the four {4} local refinery in Nigeria to meet the local demands of the country in terms of refined petroleum products has created the need for the importation of the these products and storage in tank farms for subsequent re-distribution to other parts of the country.

From there offshore position to discharge these products from the vessel into the tank farms an harbor is required and this only means that the location of the tank farm would be close to a large body of water {sea/ocean}. These factor has limited the distribution and spread of tank farms in Nigeria with most of them located in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri and Cross River areas where large body of water exist with Lagos accounting for over 65% of the product distribution network in the country.

The northern states in Nigeria are usually land-locked in nature and at such to get the products to there areas , one would require the use of trucks especially since the collapse of the rail system in Nigeria.

The influx of trucks into the Lagos metropolis for the purpose of lifting and loading refined petroleum products has no doubt created a lot of traffic congestions for commuters especially in areas where these tank farms are stationed.

In order to mitigate these traffic problem as a result of trucks parking along the road, the Lagos state government established the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Truck Terminal at Orile-Iganmu with a capacity to accommodate 1000 trucks .Similarly, the neighboring Ogun state established a truck terminal in the state but inspite of all these investment ,more still needs to be done especially if you add to the fact the construction of the Lagos-Badagry expressway would take about 50% of the holding capacity of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Truck Terminal at Orile-Iganmu.

These unconventional investment opportunity in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria is open to any savvy investor to take advantage of and make good returns .

Construction of truck terminals is one of those project that government is interested in partnering with interested investors to develop and can be seen as the real estate aspect of the oild gas industry and like you know ,real estate investment is one of the best investment windows in the world.Once the structure is on ground, it continues to make money for the investor.

TANK FARM: OIL AND GAS REAL ESTATE BUSINESS IN NIGERIA.

Nigeria though the sixth largest exporter of crude oil in the world, remains one of the largest importers of refined petroleum product in Africa, consuming about 1.2 billion liters in 40 days due to vandalization of oil distribution pipeline and the poor state of our local refinery in the country has greatly affected the capacity of the local industry to meet the demands of consumers in terms of refined petroleum product like AGO, PMS and DPK.

In order to receive, store and re-distribute these products to the end users, tank farms are required to take the product from the vessel from there offshore position into the tank farms for temporary storage through pipes. These facilities are very good for companies buying products like AGO,PMS and DPK from offshore ,the facilities are well equipped to handle large volume of product pending when loading is done on trucks and tankers.

The oil and gas market in Nigeria is large, expanding and sustainable and the provision of tank farm services is one of the lucrative aspects of the industry.

The provision of petroleum storage services cost as much as between N3 - N5 /liter for 24 hours.
The investor can choose to build the tank farm from scratch or acquire the property from owners though this option is very rare. The investor can also lease the facility for a long period of time from the owners.

Some of these facility builders took loans from bank and are seeking for interested buyers willing to purchase the facilities from them so that they can clear-up there bank loan and make some profit in the process.

The facility are usually valued based on there location, storage capacity and the size of the land the facility is sitting on.

GALLSTONE PROCESSING AND EXPORT IN THE NIGERIA

Just like oil palm tree, all the parts of a cow are useful and important in one way or the other, from the horn on their head to the hoof on the feet. Another product which is gotten from the gall bladder of cow is gallstone. This actually occurs as an infection.

Gallstone (Bezoar Bovis) is a clay-like solid substance, golden brown in colour when dry and fully processed. It is about the size of a peanut and sometimes can be as big as a pigeon’s egg. They are used in the production of medicinal products usually in advanced countries like USA, Canada, UK and Asian countries.

Because they are used in the medical field, they must be well preserved in order to maintain the integrity of the original content and in order to preserve the product, the following steps would have to be taken.

1. The gallstone MUST be bought wet and thoroughly processed by drying.
2. Immediately it is purchased, before the drying commences, it must be protected by keeping it in a very airy and well ventilated place. The wet gallstone will become mouldy and lose it value if not exposed to natural air on time.
3. If the gallstone starts developing mouldy dew, do not wash with chemicals as this would totally destroy it.

DRYING PROCESS:

Before the product would be shipped to the buyer, they need to be well dried and the following steps are advised.

1. The gallstone should be dried thoroughly in an airy place
2. Avoid over-exposure to direct sunlight as this can decolourize the product.
3. Drying gallstone requires a lot of carefulness due to the fragile nature of the product and at such care must be taken to avoid breakage which would reduce the selling price of the product.

A lot of willing, ready and able buyers are available, sourcing the product from Nigeria and other countries around the world.

The international price of the product ranges around $8 - $15 / gram and the investor can make between 10% - 30% per transaction return on investment depending on where he/she sources the product in Nigeria and the country of destination of the product.

The business can be started with N50, 000 and above which would cover the cost of sourcing and exporting the product.

INSTANT POUNDED YAM FLOUR PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA.

Much attention has been given to the development, cultivation and processing of cassava in Nigeria as oppose to the lack of coordinated effort towards the development, cultivation and processing of yam, another root crop like therefore leaving most of the harvested crop to be wasted and a great investment opportunity to be tapped by savvy investors especially in the processing of yam to yield yam flour used in the preparation of pounded yam.

Yam is the common name for some species in the genus Dioscorea (family Dioscoreaceae). These are perennial herbaceous vines cultivated for the consumption of their starchy tubers in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania. There are many cultivars of yam though only six are important as staples in the tropics. The economically important species grown are Dioscorea rotundata (white yam), Dioscorea alata (yellow yam), Dioscorea bulbifera (aerial yam), Dioscorea esculenta (Chinese yam) and Dioscorea dumenterum (trifoliate yam).

Yams are high in vitamin C, dietary fiber, vitamin B6, potassium, and manganese; while being low in saturated fat and sodium. Vitamin C, dietary fiber and vitamin B6 may all promote good health. Furthermore, a product that is high in potassium and low in sodium is likely to produce a good potassium-sodium balance in the human body, and so protect against osteoporosis and heart disease.

Worldwide yam production in 2007 amounted to 52 million tons, of which Africa produced 96%. Most of the world's production comes from West Africa representing 94%, with Nigeria alone producing 71%, equalling more than 37 million tons. Though yams can be stored up to six months without refrigeration most of the yearly production is lost through spoilage because is lack is post harvest facility in the country.

In Nigeria , Though yams can be consumed by boiling, roasting and processed to yield Amala (especially in South western part of the country) ,the kernel of this article would focus more it use in the processing and production of instant yam flour.

Due to the increasing number of middle class family and the rise in health consciousness amongst the populace, traditional ways of processing pounded yam in Nigeria is fast becoming a thing of the past as more and more family are shifting from the use of piston and mortars to ready processed yam to be used for pounded yam production, in order to reflect there new found status.

The production process of producing instant yam flour is quite simple; it involves slicing, parboiling and milling of the product to yield flour. The machinery and equipment required to production can be sourced locally though the promoter can also source the machine from abroad.
The production process is highlighted below.

1. Slicing Machine: This cuts the yam into thin regular slices to be collected in a bath of water in order to prevent discolouration. Then the sliced product is taken to the par boiler.

2. Par boiler: This is used to parboil yam. Water is introduced into the par boiler tank and then headed up by means of a gas burner. At boiling point, the tray cabinet is gradually lowered into the par boiler tank, which has generated steam to cook the yam to specification. A thermometer and a pressure gauge are attached to regulate the condition inside the par boiler. After which the product is taken to the hammer miller.

3. Hammer Mill: this is used to mill dried yam chips. It is a micro-unit sieve and cyclone that is capable of producing good flour from the chips.

The product is then packaged ready to the sold in the market.

Other requirement to consider apart from the cost of the machinery is the cost of accommodation, operating cost and project vehicle. The project is a rewarding and lucrative venture and the payback period is about 18 months.

A number of incentives have been put together to encourage investment in agriculture. These include;

o Finance Credit
