Commercial grades are A, B, C.

FACTS ABOUT SHEA NUT AND BUTTER

History: Shea nut butter has been used for centuries in Africa for cosmetics, funeral rites , medicinal ,soap making and as cooking oil.

Estimated National Production: 500,000 MT annually.

Export from Nigeria: About 3% of the national production is exported.

Types: Based on the oil content and level of processing.

Uses: They are used in the production of Shea butter which is used in the cosmetics, confectionary and other such industries.

Areas of Production: Shea nut is produced in Kwara State at Ode-Giwa in the Asa Local Government are and also in Minna area of Niger state in Nigeria. Other states include kogi, Oyo, Kebbi, Kogi and Ogun state.

The color of raw (grade A) butter ranges from cream (like whipped butter) to grayish yellow, and it has a nutty aroma which is removed in the other grades. Grade C is pure white. Grade A retains the most natural vitamins, especially vitamin A and vitamin E, which are partially lost in the other grades.

They are widely used as cooking oil and in the cosmetic industry.

With a production capacity of over 500,000 MT annually, Nigeria is the leading producer of Shea nut and butter in the world. However due to issues around quality, the nation is yet to full tap into the benefit of the expanding market for Shea nut and butter.

Based on quality and industrial application, Shea butter can be classified into the following namely Pharmaceutical, Cosmetics, Chocolate and confectionary.

In terms of market share, the Chocolate and Confectionary market represents about 95% while the Cosmetics and Pharmaceuticals market represent 5% of the market share.

Major European importing companies are primarily based in Denmark, Sweden and the UK. Denmark and the UK each imports well over 50,000 MT annually while Sweden imports are estimated at 25,000 MT annually. Fewer imports were recorded by France, as importers there are more interested in Shea butter as opposed to nuts.

The market is not open to much speculation and trades are done in a closed circuit dominated by the Europeans. Japan importers complain of being unable to break into the Europeans established network of clients and suppliers.

Shea butter is becoming increasing popular as an ingredient in cosmetics and soaps, especially in France and the US. Chocolate and confectionary products account for 95% of Shea butter demand, with only 5% currently used for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

The price of Shea nuts and butter follows the movement in the price of cocoa beans and butter but a sustainable lower price because it is only a substitute for cocoa butter in chocolate.
Based on the level of refining done and contamination present, shea butter is now classified into five grades: A (raw or unrefined, extracted using water), B (refined), C (highly refined and extracted with solvents such as hexane), D (lowest uncontaminated grade), E (with contaminants). Commercial grades are A, B, C.

SHEA NUT EXPORT IN NIGERIA; NON-OIL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY SERIES.

Though the leading exporting nation for Shea nut and butter in the world, Nigeria is yet to take advantage of the vast opportunity that exist in the export and value addition of Shea nut and butter.

Incentives are offered for better quality nuts through premium that are paid to exporters and since most of the Shea tree in Nigeria are in bushes and forest which is not subjected to herbicides and fertilizers, Nigeria’s Shea nut is one of the best in the world and qualify for organic certification.

Types: They are usually accessed based on the content.

Shea nuts are the fruits of Shea butter tree botanically know as Vitellaria. In Africa, there are two main commercial species namely Vitellaria paradoxa-mostly found in West African in countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Mali. The second specie is called Vitellaria nilotica is mostly in Uganda.

The fruit is usually 5-8 cm long and 3-4 cm wide, elliptic, a yellow or green berry with thick, butter-like, mucos pericap contains one seed which is oval or round. The seed is usually surrounded by a fragile shinning shell with large hillum on a broad base.

The following is the benchmark composition for the export of Shea nut

Free Fatty Acid {FFA} Content: Less than or equal to 60%
Moisture Content: Less than or equal to 70%
Oil Content: Greater than or equal to 45%
Latex: 4-10%

The oil content is the most crucial element of the Shea nut as that component is an important ingredient in the composition of the butter that goes into cocoa butter equivalent {CBE} and other by products. If the oil content is higher and the FFA and moisture content is lower, then the exporter will receive a price premium.

In terms of market share, the Chocolate and Confectionary market represents about 95% while the Cosmetics and Pharmaceuticals market represent 5% of the market share.

The return on investment on the export of Shea nut is estimated between 10%- 15%.

GUM ARABIC EXPORT IN NIGERIA; NON-OIL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY SERIES.

Though the second leading exporting nation for Gum Arabic in the world, Nigeria is yet to take advantage of the vast opportunity that exist in the export and value addition of Gum Arabic.

Nigeria’s actual production of gum Arabic which is estimated at over 19,000 does not reflect her potentials which can be harnessed by harvesting more products from the wild.

Gum Arabic (Acacia Senegal) Gum Acacia, also known as Gum Arabic, is a natural gum harvested from the exterior of Acacia trees in the form of dry, hard nodules up to 50 mm in diameter, and ranging from almost colourless to brown.

FACTS ABOUT GUM ARABIC

History: In most of history, Gum Arabic has been used for cooking and medicinal purposes, as well as for making of ink used in illuminated manuscripts.

Estimated National Production: Nigeria produces about 19,000 MT of Gum Arabic annually.

Export from Nigeria: Nigeria is the second leading exporter of Gum Arabic in the world.
Types: There are there grades of Gum Arabic, Grade 1, 2, and 3.

Uses: Gum Arabic is used as thickener, suspender, emulsifier, stabilizer, flavour carrier, binder and encapsulating material. In addition, it is used in confectionaries, food, beverages, pharmaceuticals and chemical industries.

Areas of Production: Production of Gum Arabic covers 14 States of the Federation namely Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Plateau, Adamawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara, Nasarawa and Niger with an estimated population of 4 million Nigerians engaged in its cultivation and trade.

There are over 1,100 Acacia species worldwide. However Acacia Senegal and Acacia Seyal are the most commercially exploited species.

Nigeria has three grades of Gum Arabic namely; Acacia Senegal (grade 1) Acacia seyal (Grade 2)and Combretum (Grade 3).

The major Acacia utilized for commercial Gum Arabic production in Nigeria are Acacia Senegal and Acacia seyal. Nigeria is the 2nd largest producer of the crop in the world after Sudan with average production of 20,000 metric tonnes of all grades of Gum Arabic.

In the year 2004, world production of Gum Arabic was put at 70,000 metric tonnes while Nigeria's production amounted to 18,935 metric tonnes with export earnings of US$88.08 million.

Gum Arabic is used for its properties as an emulsifier, thickener, binder, stabilizer and adhesive. It is believed that soft drinks and confectionary represent 70 percent of the demand for gum arabic.

Gum arabic is generally used as an additive which represents a small portion of the cost of the finished product. It is regarded by end users as having technical advantages which makes it difficult to replace completely in many applications.

This makes demand for gum quite price inelastic; supply is the key factor on the demand side.
Demand for gum arabic is driven up by the increasing world consumption of soft drinks and sweets. It is reinforced by the attention given by consumers to food products’ quality and naturalness. Because of its high fiber content, gum arabic has recently found a new range of applications in the dietetic food and health sub-sectors.

Four processors account for about 70 percent of the world trade of raw gum. Based in Europe and the USA, they buy raw gum for further transformation and re-sale as additive for the industry. The USA is the largest single market for gum arabic, accounting for approximately 30 percent of the total trade. Europe is around 20 percent of the world trade.

Confectionary represents the major use for gum in Europe while soft drinks production is the largest in the USA. Japan accounts for a little less than 10 percent of world trade. India, South Korea and China are emerging markets; it is believed that the demand from these countries is mainly for talha.

The return on investment on the export of Gum Arabic is estimated between 10%- 15% .

HARDWOOD CHARCOAL EXPORT IN NIGERIA; NON-OIL EXPORT OPPORTUNITY SERIES.

Until the late 1970’s when hydrocarbon was discovered in commercial quantity in Oloibiri, present day Bayelsa state, Agriculture remained the mainstay of the economy contributing over 90% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country as against the less than 40% it now contributes with crop production accounting for an estimated 85%, livestock 10% and the balance made up by fisheries and forestry.

Any nation that requires economic development must look inwards to identify areas where it has comparative advantage over other nations and seek to develop the identified areas.

Apart from hydrocarbon, Nigeria has comparative in the Agricultural sector where a variety of products are produced due to the favorable climatic condition ,good soil condition and the fact that over 70% of the entire land mass of the country is arable.

Nigeria has comparative advantage in the production and export of hardwood charcoal in Africa over her counterparts due to the large arable land available and the conducive climatic condition for the production of hardwoods.

The cry for alternative energy sources due to the effects of global warming has put charcoal in the forefront of the global market. A large market exists in Europe and Asia with prices ranging from $170 to $300 per MT depending on the mode of packaging. The charcoal production industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and a money spinner for savvy investors to position themselves.

FACTS ABOUT HARDWOOD CHARCOAL

History: Historically, production of wood charcoal in districts where there is an abundance of wood dates back to a very ancient period and generally, consist of pilling billets of wood on their ends so as to form a conical pile, openings being left at the bottom to admit air with a central shaft to serve as a flue { Wikepedia}

Estimated National Production: There is no exactly figure of the national production of charcoal in Nigeria. It is however estimated between 1 million - 1.5 million MT {Foraminifera Market Research}

Export from Nigeria: Though the history charcoal production in Nigeria is not properly documented but it is not until the enthronement of democracy in 1999 that reinforced the implementation of many export policies that charcoal was first exported in Nigeria. At the moment, Nigeria exports hundreds of thousands of charcoal annually.

Types: Commercial charcoal is found in either lump, briquette or extruded form. Charcoal can also be classified as sparkling or non- sparklingly.

Uses: Though charcoal is commonly used as fuel, they are also used in purification / filtration, art, medicine and horticulture.

Areas of Production: In Nigeria, charcoal is produced in every state of the federation.
Production of charcoal is one that transforms raw logs into black coloured coal-like materials after disposing off the moisture and organic substances within. The remnant solid will retain the heat giving combustible materials.

Charcoal is mainly produced from tropical hardwood, although there are other sources. The process of production is called PYROLYSIS. This entails burning of wood under high temperature in the absence of air.

Charcoal is used as fuel in cooking, barbeque and heating and casting bronze and other metals.

Hard wood charcoal can be produced year round. However it generally advised that charcoal production and export should be done during the dry season (from November to May).

Production and export of charcoal during the raining season could be rejected by buyers because of the high moisture content (more than 10%) that usually characterized the charcoal produced during this period.
