ESTABLISHING A MINI REFINERY AND PORTABLE CRUDE OIL DISTILLATION PLANT IN NIGERIA

Nigeria has for long been a major producer of crude oil ever since the first commercial well was drilled in Oloibiri in present day Bayelsa state. The country presently has an estimated 35.3 billion barrels of hydrocarbon both onshore and offshore assets mostly domiciled in the Niger Delta basin. Nigeria presently ranks tenth in the most petroleum-rich nation, and by the far the most affluent in Africa producing over two million {2,000,000} barrels per day.

Nigeria's hydrocarbon is classified mostly as "light" and "sweet", as the oil is largely free of sulphur. Nigeria is the largest producer of sweet oil in OPEC, the organization for petroleum exporting countries. This sweet oil is similar in composition to petroleum extracted from the North Sea. This crude oil is known as "Bonny light". Names of other Nigerian crudes, all of which are named according to export terminal, are Qua Ibo, Escravos blend, Brass rivers, Forcados, and Pennington Anfan.

Investment opportunities in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria can be stratified along three categories namely the up-stream, middle stream and down-stream sectors. While the middle-stream and downstream sectors as to do with importation, storage and marketing of refined petroleum products, the upstream sector is devoted to the exploration ,production and refining of hydrocarbons.

For far too long the nation has been dependant on importation of refined petroleum products due to the fact the four crude oil refinery in Nigeria cannot meet the local demand for the product which currently stands at an estimated sixty million {60,000,000} liters of refined petroleum products {PMS, DPK and AGO} per day.

Really there has never been a doubt about the large size of the Nigeria market for the refined petroleum products which is one of the largest in Africa; the problem has been that of government policy and regulation. The idea of using subsidy to augment the retail price of refined petroleum products in Nigeria though a good initiative encourages the importation of the product than local refining of the product.

In view of the recent ban on subsidy, the coast is now clear for savvy investors to the opportunity and invests the local refining of hydrocarbon in Nigeria hence the need for this article to raise awareness about the opportunity.

The Mini Refinery & Portable Crude Oil Distillation Plant is capable of processing from 2,000 Barrels Per Day (BPD) of any stream of Light or Heavy Crude Oil within API Gravity of 29°- 42.8°, into Naphtha, Diesel, Kerosene and Fuel Oil.

Mini Refineries are ideally suited for remote locations and are viable for Investments by Private and Public Sector Groups as a source of rapid production of primary fuel products and raw materials for Petrochemical Downstream Industries.

The investor can apply for oil block allocation or partner with government at different level on a PPP basis to guarantee investment and feedstock for the production plant.

Establishing a crude oil refinery requires approval from the department of petroleum resources, the petroleum regulatory organisation in Nigeria.

TOOTHPICK PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITY.

So much has been said and written about the investment opportunities in the agricultural sector in Nigeria especially in crop, livestock and fishery production to the disadvantage of the forestry sub sector. This situation has lead to the forestry sub sector contributing only 3% of the over 40% presently been contributed to the gross domestic product of the country by the agricultural sector.

This can be attribution to lack of information / interest and investment in the sub sector for a very long time. Forestry apart from providing us with industrial wood can also be used for leisure purpose. One of the products can be gotten from forest is bamboo.

Bamboo is a grass plant with hard hollow stem. They are the largest members of the grass family and are mainly found in the tropical region. Bamboos are some of the fastest growing plants in the world and they are of economic and cultural significance as a food source, building material and a versatile raw product.

One of the uses of bamboo is the production of tooth picks. Tooth picks is a small stick of wood , plastic , bamboo or other substance used to remove detritus from the teeth usually after a meal.
The product is not subject to expiry timelines and there are two models toothpick production lines. One is bamboo toothpick production line and wooden toothpick production line.

Some of the equipment required for the production of tooth pick includes

1 Sawing Machine (bamboo)
2 Bamboo Dissection Madhine
3 Flaker
4 Fix and turn on one slice of machines thick and definitely wide
5 Bamboo filament shaping machine
6 Bamboo filament set-size machine
7 Toothpicks Polishing Machine
8 Toothpicks set-size Machine
9 Toothpicks mincing Machine (unicuspid or two side)
10Multi sharpen machine

Typically the production process for toothpick can be divided into three [3} namely the log stage, the billet state and the finishing. A detailed analysis of each of the stages is given below.

The Log Stage

The process of making a toothpick begins with birch logs. The logs are lifted by grippers into a de-barker, which in two passes of the blade creates a smooth, barkless cylinder. The log is then transported into the unraveling machine, which strips the log like paper (1.06 mm thick) using 12 blades.

The Billet Stage

The end result of the unraveling machine is a billet. A billet (1.8 kilos) is manually removed and carried to a puncher. The puncher cuts identical toothpick strips at the rate of 8,000 toothpicks per second. The end result, however, is a small, soft piece of wood.

The Finishing Stage

These soft toothpicks are hardened in a dryer for 12 hours and then polished using talcum powder and friction for another four hours. The hardened toothpicks then pass through a sifter that removes damaged toothpicks. The acceptable toothpicks are sorted into a blower and conveyor that counts and packages them at the rate of 747,500 per hour.

The finished product can be packed in plastic containers in different sizes to suit the demands of the market.

The market for toothpick in Nigeria is large and sustainable with a national population of 150,000,000 people. With most of the tooth pick products in the market been imported, the investor can be assured a ready market for the product.

Some of the likely buyers include hotels, restaurants, household etc.

SHEA BUTTER PROCESSING AND EXPORT IN NIGERIA: THE OPPORTUNITY.

Nigeria, the leading producer of Shea butter in the world with a production capacity of about 500,000 metric tons produced mainly from the use of crude implements is yet to fully realize her potentials in the processing and export of Shea butter owning to a number of reasons. Unlike other agricultural products like ginger, sesame seed, peanuts whose export potential are well known , the export potential of Shea butter is not well known hence the need for this article.

Shea nuts which crushed and boiled to yield Shea butter is gotten from the Shea nut tree. The tree is also called "The Karite tree", which means 'the tree of life'. It is called this name because of the numerous healing characteristics it possesses. The trees grow mostly in Africa and are found in the dry savannah belt of West Africa where the north central region of Nigeria falls under.

In specific, Shea product can be gotten from Kwara , Niger , Kogi states and in southern states like Ogun and Oyo states. Based on distribution, two species of the product has been identified namely Vitellaria paradoxa and Vitellaria nilotica. Vitellaria paradoxa is produced mainly in the West African region while Vitellaria nilotica grows mainly in northern Uganda and southern Sudan.

Shea butter is mainly used as cooking oil, in the making of chocolate and candle and as moisturizers in the cosmetic industry. It is used in the treatment of skin disorders like eczema, burns, rashes, stretch marks, acne, wrinkles, skin discolorations, itching and other skin problems. It also provides natural protection from the sun's UV rays. It is also an excellent agent for softening skin. It can also be used to maintain hair moisturization especially in dry hair.

Shea Butter comes in different grades: Grade A; Grade B; Grade C; Grade D; or Grade F. When laboratory analysis is done, grade is determined by the presence or absence of various nutrients. Grade A is the highest and best quality for cosmetics and personal industry. Grade D is the lowest grade missing most of the valuable nutrients. The highest grades are awarded to those butters with the largest Bio-active fraction (5% and above), a good safety screen, and rancidity value below 10. To that end, only the best preparation of unrefined shea butter can earn the Grade A status.

Because of the limited amount of the Bio-active fraction preserved during the refining process, refined Shea Butter scores are typically grade C, sometimes Grade D, but never Grade A. and rarely Grade B.

Grade F is reserved for Shea Butter not fit for human use. Grade F Shea is contaminated by microorganisms (such as mold, yeast or coliform bacteria) or contaminated with heavy metals (such as lead or mercury).

In the international market, the price per ton for Shea butter packaged packed in 20 pound dark plastic sacks or 50 kilo dark plastic containers or coated steel drums ranges from USD1,800 to 2,800/MT depending on the quality while the local market price ranges from NGN180,000.00 to NGN250,000.00 Ex Lagos delivery.

The return on this project is quite attractive and impressive that it would be difficult for any financial institution especially banks with discerning credit officers to turn down any loan request for funding this project. Promoters of this venture will also feel comfortable to release their hard earned money to finance this project.

The successful implementation of this project begins with the preparation of detailed and bankable feasibility study report to ascertain the actual cost/benefit status of the project. Company registration with Corporate Affairs Commission and Nigeria Export Promotion Council is also required.

AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT LEASING OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Agriculture remains the bedrock of Nigerian economy generating about 70% of employment and constituting over 40% of the Gross Domestic Product {GDP} of the country.

The country has a land area of 98.3m hectares. At present about 34m hectares or 48% are under cultivation leaving a good portion uncultivated. There is no doubt that considering the vast area of uncultivated land coupled with the natural fertility of its soil, Nigeria has great agricultural potentials.

To say then, that Nigeria’s economy is agrarian does not mean that Nigeria is agriculturally advanced. Peasant farming characterizes agricultural practice in Nigeria. Farming families engage in subsistence farming in which family needs determine the scale of production and wherein small plots of land are cultivated by individual owners or sub-owners following age-old methods without much control on the yields. Family farming uses mainly family labor which could be augmented with minor hiring of labor and labor exchanges with other farmers at peak seasons.

The essential factors of production – land, labor, and capital are provided within the family. This system does not make adequate use of modern farming techniques, capital input, advisory services and market information.

The technology of production is not modern and involves a lot of drudgery. Also there is the problem of lack of or inadequate infrastructural facilities. This type of peasant agriculture involves 95% of Nigerian farmers, while farmers employed on corporate and government supported large-scale farms account for only 5 percent.

This situation therefore presents a viable opportunity for savvy investors to take advantage of the opportunity presented by providing agricultural equipment for leasing in Nigeria.

Some of the equipment that can be leased includes

· Tractors
· Processing Equipments
· Storage Facilities

Some of the incentives the government has put in place to encourage investment in the agricultural sector in Nigeria includes

o Finance Credit
o Tax Holdings
o Reduced Customs Charges on Imported Inputs
o Technical Support through Research Institutions
o Export Financing and Guarantee
o Agricultural Insurance Scheme
o Extension Services

SUGAR CANE PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING OPPORTUNITIES IN NIGERIA

Nigerian agriculture is characterized by considerable regional and crop diversity. Analysis of this sector, particularly the food sub-sector, is fraught with serious data problems. However, the available statistics provide a broad overview of development in agriculture upon which we can make some broad generalizations about its role in economic development and structural change in Nigeria.

In the 1960s, the agricultural sector was the most important in terms of contributions to domestic production, employment and foreign exchange earnings. The situation remained almost the same four decades later with the exception that it is no longer the principal foreign exchange earner, a role now being played by oil.

The decline in agricultural production in Nigeria has lead to massive importation of food products in Nigeria. It is on record that Nigeria spends about $2 billion annually in importing food items. Recent reports show that each year, Nigeria spends $132 million on importation of milk; $400 million on wheat; $200 million on poultry, especially frozen chicken; and $756 million on rice. Nigeria also imports about 95 million metric tons of sugar annually.

In spite of its large areas of cultivatable land suitable for the growing of sugar cane and some recent investments in the sub-sector, Nigeria still imports 90% of its sugar. Sugar, a one of the product gotten from the processing of sugar cane, is one such consumer goods that is consumed by virtually everyone because it has little or no substitute. Although there are variants of sweeteners– honey, saccharine, and others, these are seldom used by the industrial consumers of sugar. Another product can be produced from sugar cane, ethanol, is a very useful biodiesel.

Sugar is consumed by households and particularly the industries where it serves as raw materials for companies in the foods and beverages industry i.e. confectioneries, soft drink and brewery and pharmaceuticals alike account for 35 percent of the total sugar consumption in Nigeria. Trends in industrial activities suggest that the demand for sugar will continue to rise. The demand for sugar today is put at between 2.5 and 3 million tonnes.

Some of the states where sugar cane can be produced in Nigeria include Sokoto, Taraba, Niger, Kogi, Kwara and most northern states.

With overall sugar consumption in the region of 1.5 million tons, Nigeria is the largest consumer of sugar in Africa apart from South Africa, and the industry is still dependent on raw sugar imports. 90% of Nigeria’s sugar is, however, refined in the country, opening the door to increased exports of refined sugar.

The Nigerian government encourages local value addition by maintaining a duty differential of 50% between imports of refined sugar and raw sugar and granting five year tax holidays to refineries. (The tariff differential between imports of refined sugar and raw sugar from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other countries is 15%). Other incentives include

•Companies in the agro-allied business do not have their capital allowance restricted. It is granted in full i.e. 100%.

•The payments of minimum tax by companies that make small or no profits at all do not apply to agro-allied businesses.

•Agro-allied plants and equipment enjoy enhanced capital allowances of up to 50%.

•Processing of agricultural produce is a pioneer industry, consequently there is 100% tax-free period for 5 years.

•All agricultural and agro-industrial machines and equipment enjoy 1% duty.

•The Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund (ACGSF), administered by the Central Bank of Nigeria, guarantees up to 75% for all loans granted by commercial banks for agricultural production and processing.

•The Interest Drawback Program Fund provides a 60% repayment of interest paid by those who borrow from banks under the ACGS, for the purpose of cassava production and processing. To qualify for these repayments, borrowers need to repay their loans on schedule.
