PAPER CUP PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA;HOW VIABLE?

Paper cups is made from mill board, grey board, kraft paper, grease proof paper and other papers, printed and given the desired shape and are extensively use. The disposable nature of these cups not only obviates the need for washing and cleaning but also save loses due to breakages that normally occur while using porcelain or glass wares.

Paper cups find extensive usage for serving eatables in parties, functions, social gatherings, etc., catering departments of railways, airlines and other establishments also amount for a major share of the demand of cups. There are several inherent advantages in using paper cups as compared to cups of other materials. These paper cups are gaining popularity all across Nigeria as a beautiful and stylish way of minimizing exposure to food borne infections.

The relevant machinery and equipment required for paper cup production comprises of one ZBJ-X12 Medium Speed Ultrasonic Paper Cup Machine, one Die Cutting Machine, one Printing Machine, one Generator and one Project Vehicle.

Model ZBJ-X12 Ultrasonic Paper Cup Forming Machine is an automatic machine with multi-working station, which has the function of photocell detection, failure alarm, counter and the advantages of humanism design, safer operation and easier maintenance.

It makes both one-side and two-side PE-film-coated paper cups after running a whole procedure of automatic Multi-step pre-printed-cup-fan-paper Feeding (Multi-step paper-feed and Anti-back device to keep the accurate position), cup-body-side welding(ultrasonic wave), robot transfer cup body, silicone-oil lubricating(for top curling), bottom-disk punching, bottom pre-heating and pre-folding, main heating, bottom knurling(cooldevicefor2PE),top curling, cup discharging and collecting.

It is an ideal equipment of making paper cups for all kinds of drinks (hot and cold) disposable paper cups: paper tea cup, coffee cup, cold-beverage cup, beer cup, ice-cream cup etc.

The technology adopted for making paper cups is eco-friendly. Cup forming process is totally automatically done by the machine, only feeding and packaging involves manual work. The scrap papers created out of this manufacturing process also can be sold for recycled paper converters. Hence there is no chance of any pollution out of this industry.

The product would be packaged in packs of one hundred {100} pcs wrapped in PP material and packaged in carton of 30 pieces each.

The market for paper cup is national. With a population of over 165 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for paper cups.

The demand is high but local supply low hence the need for importation in the past. As paper cups are a product of daily consumption and necessity, their marketing will not be a problem as the consumers are aware of the advantages of using paper cups. The raw materials are indigenously available and the manufacturing process is also simple.

EGG CRATE / TRAY PRODUCTION FROM WASTE PAPER IN NIGERIA; HOW VIABLE?

Until the late 1970’s when hydrocarbon was discovered in commercial quantity in Oloibiri, present day Bayelsa state, Agriculture remained the mainstay of the economy contributing over 90% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country as against the less than 40% it now contributes to the GDP of Nigeria with crop production accounting for an estimated 85%, livestock 10% and the balance made up by fisheries and forestry.

Though over 70% of Nigeria’s 923,768 square kilometres land mass is arable and suitable for Agricultural, the nation is a net importer of food products.

In an attempt to tackle the problems facing the Agricultural Sector in Nigeria, Government put in place the National Agricultural Policy, which was jointly formulated by the national stakeholders and International Development Partners and approved by the Federal Government in 2002. Specifically, the National Agricultural Policy assigns supportive roles to the government, while investments in the sector are left to the private sector initiative and in order to encourage investment in the poultry sub-sector, Government approved ban on the importation frozen poultry products and gave other incentives to stimulate investment.

Nigeria, with a population of about 165 million is grossly underprovided with the essential food component, which is protein. For example, data from the FOS, CBN, and FAO indicate that from cattle, less than 2kg of beef is available to an average Nigerian per year and just mere 4kg of eggs per annum is available to each Nigerian.

Egg is one of the products from poultry farms. Eggs are laid by female animals of many different species, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, and have been eaten by humans for thousands of years.

Chickens and other egg-laying creatures are widely kept throughout the world, and mass production of chicken eggs is a global industry. Because of thier fragile nature, eggs need to be handle handled and store properly to reduce loss.

An egg tray is a carton designed for carrying and transporting whole eggs. They are very light in weight and easy to handle.

Paper Egg trays are produced from waste paper recycling to make a uniform pulp suspension and subsequently pressing the pulp in between two molds and additional water drainage by vacuum.

To ameliorate this problem of low-level of protein intake, there is the need for concerted effort, among the various stakeholders to bring about the massive production of protein based food items at competitive costs so that they would be affordable to the general masses. Aside from the other necessary economic reforms, massive investment poultry farming is one way of resolving the problem.

The demand for egg tray is highly influenced by the growth of the poultry sector. The market is there and waiting.

ETHANOL PRODUCTION FROM CASSAVA TUBERS IN NIGERIA; HOW VIABLE?

Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol; can be used as fuel alcohol, drinking alcohol, and grain alcohol. The common type of ethanol is the one found in alcoholic beverages. It is also used as fuel for cars and often called alcohol or spirit.

Ethanol is generally produced by the fermentation of sugar, cellulose, or converted starch and has a long history. In Nigeria, local production of ethanol from maize, guinea corn, millet, other starchy substrates, and cellulose is as old as the country itself.

The opportunity for ethanol production in Nigeria is amazing. Right now, our demand locally is being met by importation.

Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava in the world, producing about 40 million tons per of the product annually.Cassava is one of the richest fermentable substances for the production of crude alcohol/ethanol. Cassava produces a better quality alcohol, and the distilling technique employed ensures a high quality product, free from all type of odors and not harmful to the environment.

There are two types of ethanol: (1) Denatured ethanol and (2) Hydrous ethanol

Denatured Ethanol: It is the one used in blending Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to E10, E20 etc. It is usually mixed with 2-5 low cost hydrocarbon that makes it unfit for human consumption.

Hydrous Ethanol: It is the natural ethanol used as industrial raw material in the production of alcoholic beverages, cosmetics, perfumes, drinks, medicaments and other industrial uses. We consume up to 20 million litres of the product annually and presently, there is nobody producing it despite the abundance of the raw material (cassava) in the country. The production is viable because it is resource-based: the raw material, the technology and the equipment are all locally available.

The domestic demand for ethanol is estimated at over 200 million litres annually. With a population of over 165 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for ethanol.

SHEA BUTTER PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; HOW VIABLE?

Shea butter is produced from the boiling and crushing of Shea nuts. Shea butter is graded based on a number of factors. For some buyers, it could be based on the percentage of the expected vital constituents present in the sample while some other buyers use the level of refining and contamination present as their criteria.

Based on the level of refining done and contamination present, shea butter is now classified into five grades: A (raw or unrefined, extracted using water), B (refined), C (highly refined and extracted with solvents such as hexane), D (lowest uncontaminated grade), E (with contaminants).
Commercial grades are A, B, C. The color of raw (grade A) butter ranges from cream (like whipped butter) to grayish yellow, and it has a nutty aroma which is removed in the other grades. Grade C is pure white. Grade A retains the most natural vitamins, especially vitamin A and vitamin E, which are partially lost in the other grades.

Shea butter buyers may also specify its iodine value and a melting point of between 30c and 40c. The product should also be free of foreign matter.
With a production capacity of over 500,000 MT annually, Nigeria is the leading producer of Shea nut and butter in the world. However due to issues around quality, the nation is yet to full tap into the benefit of the expanding market for Shea nut and butter.

Based on quality and industrial application, Shea butter can be classified into the following namely Pharmaceutical, Cosmetics, Chocolate and confectionery.

In terms of market share, the Chocolate and Confectionery market represents about 95% while the Cosmetics and Pharmaceuticals market represent 5% of the market share.

Major European importing companies are primarily based in Denmark, Sweden and the UK. Denmark and the UK each imports well over 50,000 MT annually while Sweden imports are estimated at 25,000 MT annually. Fewer imports were recorded by France, as importers there are more interested in Shea butter as opposed to nuts.

The market is not open to much speculation and trades are done in a closed circuit dominated by the Europeans. Japan importers complain of being unable to break into the Europeans established network of clients and suppliers.

Shea butter is becoming increasing popular as an ingredient in cosmetics and soaps, especially in France and the US. Chocolate and confectionery products account for 95% of Shea butter demand, with only 5% currently used for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

The price of Shea nuts and butter follows the movement in the price of cocoa beans and butter but a sustainable lower price because it is only a substitute for cocoa butter in chocolate.

Nigeria, currently exports about 50,000 tons of shea butter annually, is believed to account for almost 60 per cent of the world’s supply of shea butter and allied derivatives valued at about $3.8 billion every year.

TERRAZO FLOOR TILES { PRE-CAST } PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA, HOW VIABLE?

Although it has been around for centuries, one truly fashionable and innovative flooring system that has never lost its splendor is terrazzo floor tile. Terrazzo can be found in ancient Greece, as it was used in Italy using lime mortar and broken tiles. Although it reached its peak in Venice and became known as Venetian terrazzo, and has since spread through Europe and around the world, becoming a truly stunning and functional flooring system.

Ceramic vitreous floor tiles, granite and marble stone tiles, red clay flooring tiles are some of the substitute material used in place of terrazzo floor tiles.

In Nigeria, the demand for terrazzo floor tiles is estimated to be around 18 % of the total requirement of flooring tiles. Taking the above factor into consideration the demand is expected to increase at the rate of 5% every year during the current plan period. Hence there is a good scope for setting up of new units for the manufacture of terrazzo tiles.

Terrazzo is a composite material, poured in place or precast, which is used for floor and wall treatments. It consists of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other suitable chips, sprinkled or unsprinkled, and poured with a binder that is cementitious, chemical, or a combination of both. Terrazzo is cured and then ground and polished to a smooth surface or otherwise finished to produce a uniformly textured surface.

Though the most preferred shapes are rectangular and square, ‘hexagonal and octagonal shapes are also being produced. The finish may be glossy, semi -glossy, matt, luster and of many other types.

When color gravel is used and after the bricks is pressed with the making machine, we need to use polishing machine to make a smooth surface for the tile, and the tile surface will show different color stones, it's called Terrazzo floor tile.

However when use pigment is used and after the bricks is pressed with the making machine, it doesn't need polishing machine, the finished goods will be with Uniform color, and it can be made for red, yellow or blue color, it's called color floor tile.

Arguably one of the best investment vehicle in the world is real estate development owning to a number of factors which includes the fact that shelter {housing} is one of the basic need of man, fixed supply of land and the ever increasing value of properties with time.

Nigeria with her current population estimated at over 165 million people growing at a rate of 3.5% per annum has a short fall in the supply of housing units that has been estimated to be between 16 – 17 million.

With an economic growth rate of 5.7% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large, growing and sustainable market for terrazzo floor tiles.
Socio-economic changes in society, improved standards of living, renovation of old buildings and all-round development in the country, have increased building construction activity and the demand of terrazzo floor tiles.

Ceramic vitreous floor tiles, granite and marble stone tiles, red clay flooring tiles are some of the substitute material used in place of terrazzo floor tiles.

TOMATO PASTE RE-PACKAGING FROM TOMATOES PASTE DRUMS IN NIGERIA,  HOW VIABLE?

Tomato is one of the major vegetable crops produced in Nigeria, being highly perishable in nature; it has a limited shelf life. It creates glut during it short production season and become very scarce and expensive during it off season, its short life and inadequate processing and preservation leads to loss of revenue to the farmers.

Nigeria is ranked the 2nd largest producer in Africa and 13th largest in the World producing 1.170 million tons of Tomato at an average of 25 to 30 tonnes per hectare. Despite this advantage Nigeria import processed Tomato Paste to the tune of 65.809 tones valued at N11.7 billion ($77.165million) in 2010.  The reason for this is not far-fetched, as not less than 40% of the Tomato produced in the country is lost due to lack of preservation, poor storage, humid wealth condition, transportation risk, escalated by poor marketing and absence of appropriate technology to harness these resources.

The market for tomato paste is national. With a population of over 160 million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for tomato paste.

Tomato is important in our diets because it is rich in vitamins A and C and also fibre, and it is cholesterol free. Tomato fruit boasts of only 10 calories in every 42.28 grams.Tomato paste is a thick paste that is made by cooking tomatoes for several hours to reduce moisture, straining them to remove the seeds and skin, and cooking them again to reduce them to a thick, rich concentrate.

In contrast, tomato purée is a liquid with a consistency between crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, and consists of tomatoes that have been boiled briefly and strained.

The product would be packaged in 70g four‐side seal flat sachet (140*85mm).

The product would be packaged in 70g four‐side seal flat sachet (140*85mm) made from PET /AL /PE, PET / vmPET /PE, PET /PE, and PET / vm PET/NY. The sachets would be packaged in printed 3 ply corrugated carton sheets.

On an average, the consumption of tomato in Nigeria is 10 grams per person per day. For 160 million people, the demand would be 1,600 tons per day or 584,000 tons per annum.

Nigeria is a major consumer of tomato paste of which only between 20-30 percent is produced domestically; however, 25-50 percent of the input for this domestic paste is imported from China (CBN, 2011). This leaves the market for domestically produced tomato paste underserved.

Per capita consumption is still very low as compared to developed countries. For example, US consumption of tomato paste per capita is 30 kg per year, EU countries consume 15 kg per capita, and Turkey consumes 1 Kg Per capita. As compared to these figures, per capita consumption in Nigeria is negligible.

It shows that there is still big potential for demand from the local market, which is expected to rise with the passage of time.
