IRON ORE AND COAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA AND THE VISION 20: 2020.

As the nation embark on a drive to attract investors into the generation, transmission and distribution of power in Nigeria, it is important that government not only takes such actions on a consistent basis but work to establish a good energy mix for the country by exposing the opportunities in the coal development which can be taped for power development. Same coal could be used to reactivate the rail system in Nigeria which is very vital for the transportation of bulk materials like solid minerals hence the development of the mining sector in Nigeria.

Attracting interested investors into the mining industry in Nigeria especially into the mining and processing of iron ore and coal because of the vital role they play in a nations quest for industrialization.

It is on record that Nigeria has a proven deposit of over three billion {3,000,000,000} tons of iron ore scattered in Kogi, Enugu, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger and Kaduna states. At present most of iron demands are been met from the recycling of metals scraps and the demand as been estimated at two million {2,000,000} tons annually.

Nigerian Coal is one of the most bituminous in the world owing to its low sulphur and ash content and therefore the most environmental friendly. There are nearly 3.00 billion tonnes of indicated reserves in 17 identified coalfields and over 600 million tonnes of proven reserves mostly in Enugu and Kogi states.

The mining industry is easily recognized as one of the most valuable sectors of an industrialized economy for its linkage to other sectors of development and its enormous capacity to support and simulate growth in virtually all sectors of the economy.

As Nigeria strives to achieve vision 20:2020 which is to be amongst the top 20 economies by the year 2020, it is important that government pay attention to the development of the various iron ore and coal field in Nigeria because they are generally seen as a major index of national prosperity. In fact , it can be said that the more a nations mining industry grows , the more they prosper economically and examples can be seen across the world from Canada to Australia, India ,they all have a vibrant mining industry.

At Foraminifera, we act as consultants in sourcing for mine sites, arranging for geological survey {with our partners} if need be and negotiating the terms of acquiring / partnering with the owners of such mining sites amongst other services.

There are two options available to a company or an individual to enter into the mining industry in Nigeria.

Through the acquisition of an existing mining property from the original owner and covering of a virgin mining sites through the cadastre office. Approval must be obtained from the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development for such a purchase.

The approach would be to identify companies that are already mining or that are yet to start mining and in both cases lack the financial and technical expertise and seeks outright purchase of their assets, royalty interest/ lease.

Foraminifera can also seek for virgin mining sites that have not been covered with the cadastre office and advice the investors on how best to go about getting the mining titles.

Going forward, we advice interested investors to take advantage of our services by contacting us with their detailed requirements.

Bulk SMS business in Nigeria, a country with over sixty five million {65,000,000} GSM subscribers has witnessed a lot of growth in recent times especially during the just concluded elections where politicians and political parties deployed same trying to convince the electorates to vote in their favour.

Bulk SMS allows for the sending of a particular message to hundreds and even thousands of persons with just a click of the mouse. It can be deployed for individual, corporate, academic and religious purposes.
The market for bulk SMS in Nigeria is both national and international though I would advice that the client concentrate on the local market. With a population of over one hundred and sixty five million{165,000,000} people, estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum and an average economic growth rate of 3.5 % in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large ,expanding and sustainable demand for telecommunication services{ bulks SMS} .
Bulk SMS service providers can be classified into two broad categories namely SMS gateway providers and SMS resellers/ brokers.

  • SMS gateway provider: An SMS service provider provides an SMS gateway for its users to send SMS messages to. This SMS gateway will then route the SMS messages to another SMS gateway or SMSC.
  • SMS reseller / SMS broker: SMS service providers buy a large amount of SMS messages from a lot of wireless carriers at a low price per SMS message. They then sell the SMS messages at a price higher than the cost.
An SMS service provider is a business entity that provides SMS messaging services but is not a mobile network operator. It acts as a middleman between mobile network operators and SMS service users. An SMS service provider signs agreements with a lot of mobile network operators to obtain their permission to exchange SMS messages with their mobile networks, and offers an interface for users to send and receive SMS messages.

COWPEA {BEANS} FLOUR PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING IN NIGERIA.

Cowpea is an important source of protein in both urban and rural Nigeria; not surprising, therefore, is also the fact that Nigeria is also the largest producer and consumer of cowpea in all of Africa. More than 8 million hectares of cowpea are grown in West and Central Africa. Nigeria is the largest producer with 4 million ha, followed by Niger, 3 million ha. Other producers are Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal.

The cowpea grain contains about 25% protein, and 64% carbohydrate and its potential in the alleviation of malnutrition among resource poor farmers is inestimable.

They are considered dual purpose because they provide grains for human consumption while also providing fodder for livestock.

One major achievement of the present civilian administration in Nigeria in the past twelve (12) years as been the growth of middle class which has been witnessed in the country. These growths continues to drive the increasing social and sanitary awareness of the need for hygienic and good quality processed food coupled with the geometrically exploding population and continued rural-urban drift continues to fuel the demand for cowpea flour in the country.

Cowpea flour is used in the preparation of akara (fried cowpea paste), danwake (cowpea dumplings) and moin-moin (steamed cowpea paste) and surely provides working mother the opportunity to prepare this favorite meal with the comfort it provides.

The various which the product the product can be put to coupled with the nutrition and medicinal effects of cowpea, makes cowpea flour a high soughted after product. Cowpea flour is a cheap source of protein and carbohydrate and the product can be marketed through market women, food canteens, hotels and supermarkets.

The major raw material required for production is the cowpea seed which can be sourced mainly from the northern part of the country due to the climatic condition of the area. Some of the cowpea producing states in Nigeria include Kano, Kaduna, Gombe, Zamfara etc.

Some of the machinery and equipment required for plantain flour production includes grinders, sieves, packaging machine and weighing scales.

The product would be packaged in plastic bags of different sizes targeting different segments of the market.

To sell beans flour in Nigeria or even export the product abroad, the investor would have to register with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control {NAFDAC} in Nigeria and at such the promoters would have to ensure that the production meets good quality standard by ensuring stringent and hygienic condition prevail at the production plant. The promoters would also have to register with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council {NEPC} when the product is to be exported.
