SNAIL EXPORT IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITY.

So much as been said about the investment opportunity in the agricultural sector in Nigeria and how the federal, state and local government should encourage exporters and interested parties to increase the export of non – oil products which mostly is gotten from the agricultural sector in order to create employment and increase the gross domestic product of the country.

Though as much as 112.4% increase as been witnessed in the non-oil export in the past nine {9} years mostly facilitated by the various presidential initiatives under the regime of former president, Olesegun Obasanjo, the spread and distribution of said growth is not well distributed and favours those under the various initiative. One of such agricultural product that has suffered neglect but has the potential of generating great wealth for the nation is snail.

Snail is a nocturnal animal, easy to handle that matures in six {6} months. A snail can lay 5-6 eggs/clutch on a bimonthly basis.

Snail is a source of protein and there are different kinds of snail but not all of them are good and healthy stock for framing and human consumption. However, most of the popular specie is archatina marginata, archatina archatina, helix pomatia and helix aspersa. The first two species are usually helical in nature and generally small.

Though commercial snail farming is a viable business, the subject of this article would centre on the export of snails alone. At such, we expect that interested clients have there own farm or access to large source of the product.

The market for snail is both local and international. When the snails have fully grown, they are harvested and packaged in an appropriate container that contains sawdust or maize husk and the snails are ready for sale in the local market. For the export of snail which is really the attraction of this article, the harvested snails should be processed hygienically and packaged in containers acceptable to the buyer ,ready for shipment to the buyer. Ready buyers of snail exist in Europe and North America.

Due to the nature of the product, the transportation of the product would have to be through air freight and the importer can also demand that the product be registered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control {NAFDAC}depending on the method of packaging demanded by the buyer/importer.
