ALUMINIUM ROOFING SHEETS PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY IN NIGERIA.

Arguably one of the best investment vehicle in the world is real estate development owning to a number of factors which includes the fact that shelter {housing} is one of the basic need of man, fixed supply of land and the ever increasing value of properties with time.

Nigeria with her current population estimated at over one hundred and sixty five million {165,000,000} growing at a rate of 3.5% per annum has a short fall in the supply of housing units that as been estimated to be between 16 – 17 million.

A roof is part of a building envelope, both the covering on the uppermost part of a building or shelter which provides protection from animals and weather, notably rain, but also heat, wind and sunlight; and the framing or structure which supports the covering.

The performance of a roof is measured based on its life span and it's effectiveness to retain their strength, chemical and physical properties, appearance and resistance to all forms of failure.

There are different type of roofing but the ones commonly used in Nigeria are corrugated aluminium zinc sheets, aluminium, tiles, slates. This articles focuses on the use of aluminium sheets.

Aluminum coils are the primary input in the fabrication of Aluminum roofing sheets. The coils can be plain or stucco mill finish. For colored sheets, the plain strip is passed through colour coating machine with an infrared oven, which coat and cure acrylic/polyester paint.Aluminium long span roofing sheets are manufactured with roll forming machine.

The aluminum building products industry in Nigeria can be divided into two segments. The first segment being the roofing sector, which offers products such as aluminum corrugated sheets, claddings and sidings, and aluminum flashing. The second segment which is the Windows, Doors sector offers products such asaluminum window, doors, partitions, cashier cubicles, sun louvers, curtain walling systems, suspended ceilings etc.

The Standard Organization of Nigeria {SON} regulates the quality of aluminium roofing sheets produced in Nigeria and the minimum thickness for profile roofing sheets is 0.55 millimetres.

With an economic growth rate of 5.7% per annum in the past five {5}years ,Nigeria has witnessed a growth in the number of middle class families with the associated need to have a home of there own ,thereby further deepening the real estate market in Nigeria, hence roofing needs.

It is on record that over 60% of the entire population of the country lives on rented accommodation. This indicates another latent market in the real estate industry in Nigeria.
