CASSAVA BASED ADHESIVE PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; HOW VIABLE?

Cassava is the most important root crop in Nigeria. Apart from being a staple crop in both rural and urban households cassava is a major source of income to cassava farmers and processors in the rural areas. Nigeria is the leading producer of cassava tubers in the world and produces about 40,000,000 ton annually but its industrial processing and utilization has been very limited.

It is estimated that 30 per cent of the cassava tubers are lost as waste due to lack of processing and preservation mechanisms in Nigeria. One of the more acceptable means of preserving cassava is to convert it to flour / starch.

Starch has several advantages as a raw material in the production of adhesives, including: renewability, biodegradability, abundance, cheapness and stability in price and can also be used to produce such diverse products as food, paper, textiles, beverages, confectionery, pharmaceuticals, and building materials.

Adhesives are substances that are able to make things adhere or stick together without deformation or failure through a process called adhesion. Adhesives are categorized as either natural or synthetic. Natural adhesives include animal glues, casein glues, natural gums and resins, sodium silicates and vegetable glues. Vegetables glues are starch-based and are made from starches and dextrin.

The raw materials for production of cassava starch adhesive are: Cassava starch/ Cassava flour, Caustic soda, Formaldehyde, Hydrochloric acid and Sodium silicate. These are readily available in various industrial raw materials markets all over the country.

The demand for adhesives in Nigeria for various uses including wood work, paper and packaging is quite enormous. Different types of adhesives can be formulated to meet the requirement of different end users.

Large percentage of the nation’s adhesive need is met through importation whereas domestic production accounted for only few percentage of the total supply. It is estimated that the nation’s demand for various forms of adhesives is in excess of 350, 000 metric tonnes per annum.

The adhesive was prepared by measuring the required quantity of dried starch and HCL (gelatinization enhancer), adding and stirred continuously while heating in a heating mantle maintained at a specified temperature. Known mass (concentration) of a viscosity enhancer (Caustic Soda) is added in piece meal and stirred continuously until mixture becomes sticky. Product was allowed to cool.
