DREDGER LEASING OPPORTUNITIES IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITIES.

In Nigeria and mostly in the oil and gas industry where they are used to make waterways more navigatable, Dredgers are required in commercial sand production.
Dredging activities produces lots of sand which are required in construction and other important activities. A dredge is a device for scraping or sucking the seabed, used for dredging. A dredger is a ship or boat equipped with a dredge.

Dredgers may be broadly classified into two main groups or types depending upon the method used to transport loosened material from the sea-bed to the water surface.

These are :

*Mechanical dredgers;
*Hydraulic dredgers.

Not all dredgers fall neatly into these classifications so it is convenient to include a third, which can best be described as ‘other types’. These dredgers are usually small, sometimes unique, and normally intended for quite specific extraction or relocation situations.

Dredgers from manufacturers like ELLICOT & IHC are the most demanded in Nigeria for its performance and durability but cost more to acquire , Dredgers from china are less reliable and are relatively cheaper to acquire.

The Niger Delta Development Commission as at 2013 rolled out a deluge of 47 separate dredging and related projects scattered all over the nine states under its purview. They were worth at least N45 billion according to reliable sources familiar with the development.

Research revelaed that major road contracts involving bridges were included in this flurry of activities. One of the roads was said to be 70 kilometres long, with about 7 bridges!

The problem NDDC will likely face with the delivery of these jobs include a rising scarcity of effective dredgers as more and more projects hit the market. Many of the contractors who land these jobs do not have ready dredgers to deploy to site, leaving the marketplace full of hustlers and runners who scamper about trying to secure the scarce machines at good prices.

In the present case of many jobs being given out by the NDDC, the high number of dredging projects is further enlarged by other dredging and construction projects being awarded by the major riverine states of Delta, River and Bayelsa states. These range from reclamation, shore protection of several villages to state highways being made in response to the rising clamour against past governmental inactivity. Again, the drawback is scarce availability of dredging equipment.

For dredgers and dredging activities licences are requirement from different government department and agencies . The Dredger must have a “ license to operate “ from the Federal Ministry of Transportation .

while the contractor must obtain his permit from either of the following agencies, which depends on the location of the project site .

- Nigeria inland waterway authority ( NIWA)
- State Ministry of Waterfront infrastructure development
- State Waterways Authority

Some of the areas where opportunities exist in dredging in Nigeria include

 Oil and Gas

 Construction

 Environment

 Transportation
