STANDARD SMALL SCALE CONCRETE BLOCK PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; HOW VIABLE?

Concrete is a composite material composed of coarse granular material (the aggregate or filler) embedded in a hard matrix of material (the cement or binder) that fills the space among the aggregate particles and glues them together.

Below is the production process for concrete block

1 Batching – this is to ensure that the aggregate is well drained. This process must be supported by storing the different aggregate types separately and by ensuring that the material is protected from rain so as it remains dry before being mixed with the cement, thus avoiding to exceed the optimal moisture content (OMC).

2 Mixing - Following the batching, the aggregates together with the binder, as well as pigment if, required, are discharged into a mixer and thoroughly mixed before any additional water is added. Once properly mixed, water will be added to the mixture to bring it to OMC. Uniformity will be ensured because differences in water content from batch to batch will result in differences in quality. The effect of pigmentation will not be overlooked. The mixture is stored in the hopper ready for dispensing into the moulds.

3 Filling of moulds – During mixing, variations in density will result if the gauged quantities are not consistent or the mixture is not uniformly distributed within the mould. Over and above these variations are due to variations in moisture content. This undesirable situation is prevented by the filling the moulds.

4 Compaction – This is another step to enhance the quality and durability of the blocks.

5 Curing – the quality of concrete blocks is improved by water curing. This process is also intended to protect aesthetic of the blocks by preventing the migration of calcium hydroxide to the surface of the blocks.

Nigeria has a housing-stock shortage of approximately 12 to 16 million units. Only 10% of the population own homes and millions of citizens live in accommodation with little access to basic services.

Block making is always considered a lucrative business. This is due to the fact that blocks and bricks are materials that people use to build houses, and they are always in continuous demand.

concrete blocks popularly called 'blocks' are used for construction of buildings, and there are different sizes of blocks; 9 inches, 6 inches, 5 inches and 4 inches. They either come in hollow or solid. There are two types of blocks, we have the machine vibrated blocks and the hand mould blocks.

The machine vibrated blocks are made with a vibrating machine mould, while the hand moulds are the ones done manually without machines. Machine vibrated blocks are stronger than the hand mould blocks, so they are more in demand than the hand moulds.

The price of block varies, it is determined by their strength and the location of the factory. Block with more strength will be more expensive than the ordinary blocks, such blocks are called special blocks.
