HARDWOOD CHARCOAL PROCESSING AND PACKAGING OPPORTUNITY FOR NIGERIANS ABROAD.

The investment opportunity in the export of hardwood charcoal is a known fact and at such we do not wish to start discussing that here. The subject matter has already been addressed in one of my write-up in the past. The aim of article is to expose the investment opportunity in the re-packaging of hardwood charcoal for sell to stores in Europe, Middle East and Asia.

In the course of securing contracts for some of our clients in the past, we have noticed the buyers prefer to buy in small packaging like 2kg, 3kg and 5kg as oppose to the large / bulk packaging that is available here in Nigeria. Though the packaging could be done 2kg, 3kg and 5kg but the cost of doing usually makes the difficult for small scale investors to participate in the export of the product.

It is on record that over 4,000,000 Nigerians live abroad and these set of people is whom this write-up is meant for. They can tap into these opportunity by sourcing the product from bulk exporters and re-packaging them for sales to stores in there country of residence. The business could also be done by Nigerians residing in the country with the means to do the business.

The season is here again for securing of hardwood charcoal contract which usually last from September to May especially in European country. Hardwood charcoal supply contract in Middle East and Asian countries is all year long. In the Britain only, the demand for hardwood charcoal is in excess of 70,000 MT annually.

Hardwood charcoal is basically used a fuel in outdoor activities like BBQ and the international specification for charcoal is given below.

Fixed Carbon: 75%
Moisture Level: 7%
Ash Contents: 3.6%
Heating Level: Kcal /kg 6800
Volatile Matter: 13.5%
Burning Time: 980 sec/cm3

In the international market, the price per ton for hardwood charcoal packaged in bulk is around 170 Euro FOB while packaging in 2kg, 3kg and 5kg could cost up to 300 Euro per ton.
