VEGETABLE OIL PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITIES

Any nation that requires development must look inwards to identify areas where it has comparative advantage over other nations and seek to develop the identified areas.

Apart from hydrocarbon, Nigeria has comparative in the Agricultural sector where a variety of products are produced due to the favorable climatic condition ,good soil condition and the fact that over 70% of the entire land mass of the country is arable.

Vegetable oil are edible oil used as cooking or frying oil at homes and industrially ,they are used in the production of soaps, cream, butter and margarine. It is liquid at room temperature and when pure is golden yellow in colour. Cake a bye-product in the production of vegetable is very useful in the production of animal feeds.

The project involves the processing of oil bearing seed for the production of vegetable oil. The equipment required for production depends on the raw material used and at such the basic equipment required are crusher, toaster, filter press and refining plant. Other equipment includes receiving tanks, weighing scale and project vehicle. The envisaged output are vegetable oil and cake, the latter been used in livestock feed production.

The raw material that can be used as feedstock for the plant include soya bean, palm kernel seed, sunflower seed, cotton seed, groundnut seed, sesame and melon seed.

Nigeria is the second largest producer of sesame seed in Africa, producing about 120,000 MT annually .About 65% of the annual production is processed into oil and 35% used as food. The country also produces all of the feedstocks and at such raw materials for start-up would be a problem.

The manufacturing process would be dependent on the raw material used for production. When the raw material is groundnut seed, the nuts would first be placed in the decorticating machine where the kernel would be separated from the husk. The kernel is then placed in the kettle for boiling, then to the expeller after which the product is taken to the filter process where the oils is extracted leaving behind the cake.

With mild modification, the manufacturing process for all other raw material is similar to same outlined above.
