PALM KERNEL OIL PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA; THE OPPORTUNITIES.
It is a generally believe no part of the oil palm tree is useless. After the processing of the fresh fruit bunch to yield palm oil, the product that is left is the shelled palm nut which can be cracked to yield the palm kernel nut and the shell. While the shells can be used as fuels and road construction ,though the market is not well developed in the country, the palm kernel nut can be crushed and processed to yield palm kernel oil and cake.
“Oil" is a collective term for more or less viscous, generally organic-chemical liquids. Depending on their chemical composition, a distinction may be drawn between fatty, essential, mineral and silicone oils.
Palm kernel oil is a white to yellowish oil of vegetable origin which is solid at normal temperatures and is obtained from the kernels of the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). It is one of the best oils. Palm kernel oil is different from palm oil, which is obtained from the flesh of the fruit.
Palm kernel oil is used in the production of vegetable oils, soaps and candles. Oil palm tree grows in the coastal belt of Nigeria which varies in depth from 100 to 150 miles and a riverine belt which follows the valleys of the Niger and Benue for a distance of about 450 miles from the sea and naturally production of palm kernel oil usually occur along this locations. The main palm oil producing states in Nigeria includes Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Cross River, Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, Ekiti, Akwa-Ibom, Delta and Rivers.
The market for palm and palm kernel oil is national. With a population of over one hundred and fifty {150,000,000} million people and an estimated national population growth rate of 5.7% per annum ,an average economic growth rate of 3.5% per annum in the past five {5} years, Nigeria has a large market for edible oil.
The investor can choose to her his/her cracking machine or source the raw material from other cracking centers around. The other machinery required includes the expeller and storage tanks with heaters.
In the course of production, the plant would also yield palm kernel cake. Palm kernel cake is a bye-product gotten from the processing of palm kernel oil. They form a very important part of animal feeds while the shells gotten from the cracking of the nuts are used as fuel and for construction purposes.
