TOURISM; AN ESSENTIAL DEVELOPMENT TOOL IN NIGERIA.

The rapid growth of the modern tourism industry which, in 2005 registered approximately 800 million international tourist arrivals worldwide has made the tourism industry one of the most important industries of the world, particularly in economic terms.

Tourism a business activities connected with providing accommodation services and entertainment for people who are visiting a place for pleasure, has been identified as one of the key segment of the Nigerian economy that requires to be harnessed and developed if the vision 20: 2020 of making Nigeria rank amongst the top 20 economies by the year 2020 is to be achieved.

This is no doubt that the country has potential in the different segment of tourism like Eco- Tourism , Cultural Tourism though the incidence of domestic leisure travel may be low, the sheer size of Nigeria’s population means that there is a significant contribution to the demand for tourism services from domestic travel activity.

Some of the tourism site in Nigeria includes Tinapa Business, Leisure and Conference Resort, Yankari Game reserves and other game reserves, Olokola Cultural Resort, Museum scattered in different part of the country, Ogunike Cave, Olumo Rock amongst others.

As part of the drive to achieve development in the sector, the federal government in 2005 launched the Tourism Master Plan for Nigeria with the central issue around the plan being poverty alleviation and generation of employment, physical environmental
enhancement and cultural and social issues, including HIV /Aids.

In Nigeria, the potential market segments for development are likely to be leisure (new
experience seekers; Nigeria’s Diaspora; special interest; expatriate community;
family holidays), conference and meetings, visiting friends and relatives (VFR),
religious sports and other events.

The revenue generated from travel within the country by employees and staff of Federal Government departments and agencies generates a demand for an estimated US$68m/N8.8b of transport and hospitality sectors while Spending by international tourists has a direct impact on the national economy estimated at US$280m/N36b.
